Abstract
A Menina e a Cançâo 」, 「나는 행복해지고 싶다 Quéro ser Alégre」그리고 「세르타네자 Sertaneja」로 이루어져 있다. This thesis focuses on the Brazilian and modernism factors of 「Suite for Voice and Violin」 which was composed by Heitor Villa-Lobos(1887-1959), one of the representative Brazil's national composers in the early 20th century. Villa-Lobos composed more than 1,500 pieces in various genres, established Brazil national music, and put his utmost effort in music education. In addition, he is considered as one of the greatest Brazilian musicians who gave Brazil, a multiethnic state, patriotism and pride a boost. Based on Brazilian folk music, Villa-Lobos created his own improvisatorial and creative music. He added popular music and European style elements and his fertile imagination. 「Suite for Voice and Violin」 was a piece composed in his first visit to France in 1923. In the following study, the period of the work is set when the modernism movement was ahead of the times in Brazil. The piece is solely performed by voice and violin, but excludes the piano accompaniment. Furthermore, the work consists of 3 short pieces; 「A Menina e a Cançâo 」, 「Quéro ser Alégre」, and 「Sertaneja」. Generally, the vocal part uses a melancholic and lyrical Modinha tune along with African dance Lundu melody. Regarding the rhythm, Brazilian musical features such as frequent syncopations, various rhythms, irregular rhythmic accents, as well as samba, bossa nova, and tango rhythms are indicated. Meanwhile, impressionist factors including continuous parallel motion in perfect fifth, repetitive chromatic, and frequent glissando are shown in the violin part. In addition, obstinate repetitive rhythms and primitive atmospheric factors are commonly used. Based on the analysis of the piece, the suite musically expressed the barren northeastern Brazil due to severe drought. The first song implies the droughty scenery through lyrics and musical expressions. The second song, which is in a vocalise style, reminds the life of the miserable people living in the area. Lastly, the final song, which the lyrics mainly consists of onomatopoeia, depicts the war between bandits which emerged from the severe drought, and the government who is going after the bandits. As such, all the three songs are correlated by the drought set in northeast Brazil, Sertão. Although there are three songs in separate, the suite gives a sense of unity as a whole piece. The study examines the unique music world of Villa-Lobos. Furthermore, the affection to one's homeland, the Mother Nature of Brazil, and the diversity of human were reflected in the study. Through the thesis, the writer hopes to raise understanding of the little-known vocal piece of Villa-Lobos and help in the practical performance.
