본 윌리엄스(R. V. Williams)와 브리튼(B. Britten)의 가곡 비교연구

Abstract

본 논문은 시인 윌리엄 블레이크(Williams Blake, 1757-1827)의 작품 『경험의 노래(Songs of Experience)』 중 동일한 시를 가사로 사용한 두 작곡가 랄프 본 윌리엄스(Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958)와 에드워드 벤자민 브리튼(Edward Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 가곡 <독 나무(A Poison Tree)>, <런던(London)>, <아! 해바라기(Ah! Sunflower)>의 비교연구이다. 윌리엄 블레이크는 당대에 거의 주목받지 못했던 영국의 낭만주의 시인으로 독창적이며 뛰어난 상상력을 가진 예술가였다. 그의 작품 중 절정에 이르는 작품으로 평가받는 『순수와 경험의 노래(Songs of Innocence and Experience)』는 현대에 와서 많은 주목을 받게 되었고, 20세기 영국을 대표하는 두 작곡가 본 윌리엄스와 브리튼도 이 작품을 사용하여 가곡을 작곡 하였다. 본 논문에서는 이 가곡들을 연구하기에 앞서 시인 윌리엄 블레이크의 생애와 그의 작품 『경험의 노래』에 대해 알아보았다. 그리고 두 작곡가의 시대적 배경이 되는 20세기 영국 가곡의 흐름을 살펴본 후 본 윌리엄스와 브리튼의 생애와 가곡 특징을 연구하였다. 그 후에 <독 나무>, <런던>, <아! 해바라기>의 시의 원문과 원문의 의미를 연구하였으며, 본 윌리엄스와 브리튼의 세 개의 가곡 악곡 분석을 통해 구조와 형식을 이해하고 표시된 셈여림과 박자 등을 통해 전반적인 곡의 분위기를 살피면서 비교하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 시인 윌리엄 블레이크는 작품 『경험의 노래』를 통해 계속된 전쟁과 산업혁명, 자본주의 발전의 영향으로 영국의 타락한 정치·종교·사회·문화·경제를 비유적으로 또는 직접적으로 고발하고자 하였다. 블레이크의 동일한 시로 붙여진 본 윌리엄스와 브리튼의 세 가곡은 모두 비슷한 점이 있는데, 시의 어두운 분위기를 고려해 단조의 조성을 사용했다는 것과 시의 연 구분에 의해서 형식을 나눴다는 것이다. 본 논문에서 연구된 민족적인 색채를 띠는 작곡가 본 윌리엄스의 세 개의 가곡에서는 병행 3화음이나 선법적인 요소, 순차 진행, 화성보다 선율 중심의 특징을 보였고 이것은 영국 민요의 영향이 두드러지는 가곡의 특징을 보였다. 또한 본 윌리엄스는 블레이크의 시를 변형 없이 단순하면서도 정확하게 가곡에 세팅하면서 선율과 시에 대한 섬세함을 보여주고 있는데, 이 가곡들은 시를 묘사하는데 있어서 예술적인 조화를 보여주는 걸작으로 평가받고 있다. 브리튼의 가곡에서는 시에 대한 본인의 해석적 효과를 살리기 위해 원문의 가사를 반복 사용하였고, 시와 음악의 결합을 위해서 조성과 화성을 모호하게 하고 비화성음, 잦은 변박과 다양한 리듬 형태, 주제 선율 반복, 폭 넓은 다이나믹과 셈여림 등을 사용하였다. 그는 영국의 전통 음악 위에 20세기의 다양한 음악 기법들을 절충적으로 사용함으로서 어느 한 악파의 음악 양식에 편중되지 않는 영국적이면서도 신 조성음악으로 본인만의 음악적 스타일을 만들어 나갔다. 본 논문에서는 시의 원문과 배경을 알아보고 해석함으로써 가사 내용의 의미를 파악할 수 있었는데, 이러한 연구를 통해 가곡에 있어서의 시의 중요성을 재조명하였다. 또한 블레이크의 동일한 시에 의한 본 윌리엄스와 브리튼의 가곡 작품의 비교, 분석을 통하여 작곡가가 표현하고자 했던 시의 음악적 표현을 여러 가지 측면으로 알아보고, 시에 내포된 의미와 작곡가의 의도를 파악하였다. ;This document is about a comparative study of three songs 'A Poison Tree', <London>, and 'Ah! Sunflower' written by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) and Edward Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), both used same poems out of 『Songs of Experience』 by William Blake (1757-1827). William Blake was a British poet who had received little attention in his time and was the artist who had uniqueness and too exceptional imagination. 『Songs of Innocence and Experience』 which is evaluated as the culmination of his works has been given much attention nowadays, and two composers representing the UK in the 20th century also used this work for their composition of the song. Before researching these songs, I investigated in detail the life of the poet, William Blake and his work -『Songs of Experience』 for this paper. And I had reviewed the background flow of British song in the 20th century of these two composers and studied the lives and the characteristics of songs of Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten. After that, I studied the original text and its meaning of the poem, and understood the structure and form through the musical analysis on three songs of Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten, and compared them through the marked piano-and-forte and rhythm etc while observing the overall atmosphere of the songs. The results of study are as follows; William Blake intended to figuratively or directly accuse of the corrupted politics, religion, society, culture and economy of the UK influenced by the ceaseless wars and the industrial revolution, and the growth of capitalism through his work - 『Songs of Experience』. Three songs of Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten composed on the same poem of Blake were all in similarities, which were consisting of the minor in the consideration of the dark atmosphere of the poem and divided the formats by the classified phrases of the poem. Considering these, we can see a glimpse that these two people were trying to absorb the contents of the poem in their music. The composer, Vaughan Williams, of the national colors vividly expressed the influence of British folk song by presenting the characteristics of a paralleled triad or the mode elements, sequential progression, and melody-centered characteristic rather than harmony etc in the song composed in the accompaniment of Oboe and studied in this paper. The song of Benjamin Britten repeatedly used the lyrics of the original text in need of presenting his interpretational effects of the poem, and the escape note while obscuring the composition and harmony in order to combine the poem and music, and frequent rhythm variation and diverse rhythmic form, and the repeated theme tunes, and a wide range of dynamic and piano-and-forte etc. Through the eclectic use of a wide range of musical techniques of the 20th century over the traditional British music, he made up his own musical style form as the most British and of new composition music which were not inclined in a particular form of the musical clique.
