Benjamin Britten의 On this island, Op.11에 관한 반주 및 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 연가곡 「이 섬에서 On this island Op.11」(1937)에 관한 분석 연구이다. 이 논문에서는 먼저 영국성악 음악의 전반적인 흐름을 알아보고 브리튼의 음악과 삶의 영역에 있어서 큰 영향을 끼친 시인 오든 (Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907 – 1973)에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이후에 브리튼의 생애와 음악을 짚어보고 그의 연 가곡「이 섬에서 On this island Op.11」를 집중 분석하여 그 특징들을 알아봄으로 이 작품을 연주하고자 하는 연주자들의 이해를 돕고자 한다. 브리튼은 20세기 영국을 대표하는 뛰어난 작곡자, 피아니스트, 지휘자로서 여러 분야의 곡을 작곡하였지만, 그 중에서도 80여곡이 넘는 성악음악을 작곡함으로 퍼셀 (Henry Purcell, 1659-1695) 이후 영국 성악 음악 발전에 큰 기여를 한 인물로 손꼽힌다. 특히 브리튼은 연가곡 분야에 많은 주력을 하였고 가곡작곡에 있어서 그는 시의 내용을 매우 중요하게 생각하여 음악에서 시적인 표현과 묘사에 많은 초점을 두었다. 이 논문에서 다루어진 브리튼의 연가곡 「이 섬에서 On this island Op.11」는 그의 초기 연가곡으로 1930년대 영국을 이끈 대표적 시인 오든의 시집「보라, 나그네여! Look, Stranger!」에서 영감을 얻어 작곡된 최초의 피아노 반주 연가곡이다. 이 곡은 5개의 노래로 구성되었지만 시적, 음악적 서로 연속성을 가지지 않으며 각 곡마다 각기 다른 다양한 독립된 형식을 취하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 연가곡 연구를 통해 먼저는 영국성악음악의 시대별 특징들을 알아보았고, 시를 매우 중요시 하는 브리튼의 음악을 이해하기 위해서 시인인 오든의 생애와 그의 시에 대해 살펴보았다. 브리튼은 이 작품에서 가사마다 의미를 부여하려하고 그것을 음악적으로 표현하려는 음회화기법(word painting)을 사용하였으며 각운의 음악적 배치와 다이나믹 변화를 통해 이를 더 효과적으로 표현하였다. 또한 17세기 바로크 시대의 장식리듬에 의한 변형방법을 사용하였고 장조와 단조의 전통적인 조성체계를 유지하였으며 고전적 대위법 기법들을 사용하여 전통적 선율들을 전개하였다. 그리고 조성 파악이 애매모호한 현대적 기법과 불협화음을 통한 독특한 소리의 구현, 재즈풍의 리듬 등 현대적인 여러 가지 기법들도 사용하였는데, 이 방법들은 브리튼이 전 통적인 선율과 현대적인 기법의 절충적 양식을 추구한 것임을 알 수 있다. 우수한 음악적 감각으로 시어들을 그만의 음악 속에 담아내는 표현들과 이전 시기 작곡가들의 음악 기법을 현대적 기법과 더불어 자신이 원하는 음악적 재료로 활용한 독특한 방법들은 브리튼이 성악 음악에서 인정받는 작곡가임을 확인 시켜주며 「On this island」를 비롯한 그의 가곡들은 그 당시부터 지금까지 높이 평가되어지는 작품들이다.;This paper presents an analysis on Benjamin Britten’s song cycle 「On this island Op.11 (1937)」 . Following the exploration on the overall flow of British vocal music, this paper will examine the poet Wystan Hugh Auden who had great influence on Britten’s music and life. Then I will go over Britten’s life and music before focusing on analyzing the characteristics of 「On this island Op.11 (1937)」 in means of helping vocalists’ understanding of the piece. Benjamin Britten composed various pieces as a composer, pianist, and conductor of the 20th-century but he is best known as one of the most influential figures to contribute in British vocal music, writing over 80 vocal pieces, after Henry Purcell (1659-1695). Britten especially focused on song cycles and as he considered the contents of the poems important, he concentrated much on the musical delivery of poetic expressions or descriptions. This paper discusses one of the very first song cycles of Britten, 「On this island Op. 11 (1937)」, that was inspired by Auden’s book of poems 「Look, Stranger!」; this is the first accompanied song cycle. While this song cycle is consists of five songs, each has an independent structure different from one another. For full comprehension of Britten’s music, this paper has studied the features of British vocal music periods along with Auden’s life and his work. In 「On this island Op.11(1937)」 Britten uses a musical technique, word painting, to show his intention of adding meaning to lyrics and was also able to effectively express this by using the end rhymes arrangements and dynamic changes. In addition, he applied variation from 17th century Baroque ornamentation, maintained the traditional major-minor tonality, and used classical counterpoints to stretch out the traditional tune. Britten’s pursuit to find a eclectic style between traditional tonality and modern technique can be found in using modern techniques which tonality are hard to trace, unique sound made from dissonance, jazz rhythms, etc. Britten used his gifted talent in music to serve poetic diction in music and tried to be as original as he can by applying traditional and modern musical techniques as his materials, and this is what confirms his position as Britain’s most significant composers in vocal music history. 「On this island Op.11 (1937)」 is one of his many brilliant pieces that received attention.
