The purpose of this portfolio is to use short stories to teach English in a Korean EFL classroom. Using short stories is beneficial in that it can be helpful for language practice, reading comprehension and developing an aesthetic appreciation for literature (Scher cited in Erkaya, 2005, p. 2). Moreover, students are able to develop a stronger motivation for reading, while at the same time learning about literature and culture, developing high-order thinking skills and reinforcing their language skills. The target audience is a group of middle school students in Korea. They are all sixteen years old and the group consists of both boys and girls. They have never been abroad, but their English language proficiency level ranges from mid-intermediate to high-intermediate according to the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). The target learners have been studying English for more than ten years in an EFL setting. However, most of the English classes focused on testing, and as a result, their productive skills are limited. Therefore, the students are interested in learning how to communicate in English. In addition, they are also interested in reading literature. Through this course, students hope to improve their productive skills as well as their critical thinking skills. This course is an after-school program, which meets twice a week for two hours per session.-
