Abstract
This project is intended to develop reading and writing skills for students in private elementary school. The target students of this portfolio will be 4th graders who are taking a one month Winter English class who would particularly like to improve their reading and writing skills. The textbook aims to promote critical thinking skills using authentic texts. The class may be mixed-gendered with 10-12 students and their current level of ability is the ACTFL level of Intermediate Mid. Most students have already studied English for more than 7 years in an ESL or EFL environment and are currently using both National Curriculum English textbooks and EFL course books in school. The textbook will be designed with learners’ particular needs in mind, engaging them in reading of nonfiction type texts found in newspapers, magazines, brochures, or Internet websites. Nowadays, the national standardized English test tends to assess the ability to read more content-based contexts in various areas. As a result, students may need to develop this required ability through meaningful texts.
