Relationships, which are an essential part of human existence and happiness, are ironically also causing feelings of emptiness and alienation. People in this modern age who are addicted to various behavioral elements, such as luxury goods, computers (games, smart phones), and power, use these in order to relieve psychological anxiety and feelings of identity loss. In other words, when one’s identity becomes vague or alienated, they become more obsessed with human relationships. Furthermore, one’s psyche, alienated in their obsession, becomes addicted again to the various behavioral elements as a repeated adverse effect of relationships, once again creating feelings of empitness and alienation, thus repeating the cycle all over again. Art relentlessly strives to express the visible appearances and conflicts of human beings. This study is not only focused on the fact that addiction and alienation are essential and inevitable problems, but also on their artistic value. The adverse cycle that addiction and alienation present is visualized as an artwork. Prior to the final project, I experimented with early trials of Addiciton and its effects through the use of pattern repetition in these intitial projects. <Hi Louis Vuitton>Visualized Nazism in relation to the theme of luxury addiction, depicts strength in numbers through blind obedience and uniformity. <Life<Computer> realistically depicts the pattern-image of modernized society unable to live without digital media, i.e. computers and smartphones, without the use of metaphors or conceptualization. <The Tower of Babel - Power Freaks>, which expresses power addiction, demonstrates the human habit of constant comparison and the desire to move up the ladder through endless competition. The four main installations that follow are presented as an expression of the psychological emptiness and human alienation created by relationship addiction. <Network> demonstrates the habit of modern people to establish lasting relationships, in the form of a connected multitude, displayed lying down in a coffin. In relation to this, <Rift> -in pixelated form- defines the event in which modern people experience identity loss through a fragmented-self, due to a vast multitude of relationships. The second-part installation,<Isolation>, which was developed off of the first-part installation, <Network> and<Rift>, depicts modern people who are continuously addicted to relationships with others thus repeatedly alienating themselves. In relation to <Isolation>,<Identity> symbolizes modern people whose self-identity becomes torn as a result of relationship addiction and identity loss. In other words, human beings are addicted to networks in order to establish relationships, through which their self-identity becomes torn, resulting in identity loss. These installations are meant to be seen as a connected whole. Their collective design, through the process of repetition, depicts various patterns that create a larger scheme. It is the intention of these installations to give the audience a message through visual-impact. This study is focused on emptiness, alienation and the obsessive compulsion to alleviate the feelings of anxiety, stress and disquiet associated with human relationships. Its focus is to analyze various behavioral addictions as a consequence of psychological stress created by relationships among people in urban environments. The goal is to help the audience understand that they can solve these problems through self-awareness obtained from these installations. These are shown visually in various aspects, and awaken the audience’s consciousness through visual stimulation. This research demonstrates the effort of the installations to deliver this message by removing analytical elements and adding to their artistic purity. The future plan is to develop new expressive methods, and to create more installations based on previous ones.-
