사유의 공간

Abstract

본 논문은 인간의 본질(本質)과 관계 속에 위치한 존재(存在)에 대한 탐구와 이를 어떻게 예술로 표현할 수 있는가 하는 물음을 바탕으로 본인 작품에 대해 전반적인 연구를 시도한다. 표면에 잘 드러나지 않는 존재를 인식하는 방식은 사유하는 힘을 요구하며, 이에 따르는 시간과 노력을 할 수 있는 공간을 필요로 한다. 빠르게 발전한 현대 과학기술은 우리에게 간편하고 편리한 삶을 안겨주지만, 효율성을 최고의 가치로 여기게 되면서 현대인은 분주한 문화 속에 잊혀 진 ‘사유의 시간’을 인식하지 못한 채 살아간다. 이러한 상황을 마틴 하이데거(Martin Heidegger)는 ‘현존재(Dasein)’가 자기의 ‘존재’를 보지 못한다는 의미인 ‘존재 망각(Seinsvergessenheit)’이라는 개념을 통해서 ‘존재의 사유(Denken des Seins)’에 대한 인식이 결여되었다고 말한다. 이러한 인식은 논문의 제목에서 말했던 것처럼 ‘사유의 공간’을 제공하고자 하는 욕구에 타당성을 부여한다. 이 사유의 공간은 ‘무의식의 공간’임과 동시에 ‘물리적인 공간’을 의미하기도 한다. 이러한 사고는 본 논문에서 예술이 그 역할을 담당하고 있음을 논증하며, 그림 그리기, 영상과 글을 기록하는 방식으로 존재를 사유한 본인의 예술 행위를 설명하려고 한다. 예술을 통해 드러나는 존재와 현상학적인 탐구는 주관성이 개입되는 사적인 공간으로부터 나온 것으로 예술작업 과정을 이해하기 위해 구체적인 해석이 필요하다. 따라서 본론의 첫 번째 장에서는 이를 두 가지의 측면에서 설명하고자 한다. 첫째로 과거 속 현인들을 통해 현상학적인 예술을 어떻게 바라보아야 할지 개념화해야 할 것이다. 존재에 대한 탐구를 현상학과 분석철학의 관점으로 해석하고, ‘존재’에 대한 사유는 모리스 메를로-퐁티(Maurice Merleau Ponty)의 관점을 통해 설명한다. 더 나아가 키에르케고르(Kierkegaard)를 통하여 본인의 예술 안에서 ‘존재 보기’에 대한 관념을 더 확장하고자 한다. 두 번째 장에서는 숭고를 통해 느끼게 되는 존재의 측면을 고찰한다. 먼저, 숭고와 현상학의 관계를 설명하고, ‘숭고’를 어떻게 예술적 측면으로 드러냈는가를 바넷 뉴먼(Barnett Newman)을 통해 알아본다. 이외에 현대 예술에서 빛과 공간 속 작품을 통해 숭고한 현상을 느끼게 하는 여러 예술가들의 작품을 분석할 것이다. 숭고를 체험하는 과정에서 예술이 존재를 발견하도록 돕는 표현에 대한 모티브도 얻을 수 있다. 마지막으로 본론의 세 번째 장에서는 본인의 작품을 해석한다. 본인의 작업은 일상생활에서 자아를 성찰했던 순간적인 경험들을 가지고 존재적 탐구로 발전시켜 작업한다. 그리고 내면에 대해 표현한 본인의 작품은 빛과 침묵의 요소가 어떻게 작품과 연결되는지 구체적으로 설명할 것이다. 또한, 작품 안에서 낯선 공간을 제시함으로써 전달하고자 했던 의도와 소통방식에 대해 제시한다. 이는 ‘존재를 비추는 빛’, ‘집으로의 여정’, ‘내면의 드로잉’, ‘사유의 공간’과 같은 공통된 키워드로 본인의 작품을 분류하여 설명한다. 이어서 제작 방식과 실체적인 부분을 서술함으로써 작품의 특성을 분석할 것이다. 요컨대 본 논문은 예술을 통해 자아의 성찰을 말하며, 존재적 본질에 접근을 시도한다.;This thesis is intended to provide research about the overall aspects of my work including the methodology used to explore the existence inherent in a relationship with human nature. The way of perceiving an existence that is veiled on the surface requires the power of thought. This process requires a space where time and effort are allowed for thought. Though the rapid advancement of science and technology has granted us convenient lives, modern people are oblivious to the “time of thought”; the recognition of which is hindered by today’s busy cultural circumstances and their tendency to value efficiency most. While witnessing this situation, Martin Heidegger pondered the notion of “Seinsvergessenheit” where one is in a state of “Dasein” and is unable to identify his/her existence. He did this to state “Denken des Seins” or “cognition is scarce”. Such perception bestows validity to a person’s desire for a space for thought. This “space for thought” simultaneously signifies a “space of unconsciousness” and also a “physical space”. I intend to show how the concepts stated above are applied to my artwork, which involves drawing, video, and composition. Existence expressed through art and phenomenological investigation comes from a private and subjective space, and so an interpretation for understanding the process of art activity is required. Therefore, the first section of this paper’s body intends to explain the aforementioned idea using two aspects. First of all, it is vital to conceptualize the method implemented in examining phenomenological art through philosophers of the past and their beliefs. Both analytic philosophy and phenomenology will be applied to the interpretation of existential exploration. In addition, thought based on existence will be explained in Maurice Merleau Ponty’s perspective. Furthermore, I will attempt to expand the notion of “seeing existence” (meaning self-examination) in my art by applying Kiierkegaard’s viewpoint. Secondly, I intend to examine the aspect of existence through ‘sublimity’ and to explain the methodology behind ‘sublimity’ being unveiled in an artistic perspective by applying Barnett Newman’s conceptual opinion. While analyzing various artists’ paintings of light and space, it will become possible to obtain a motif for expressions intended to make way for art to experience ‘sublimity’ and ultimately find worth. Finally, the last section of this paper’s body will specifically explain the link between the methodology behind the inner part of my paintings and the elements of light and silence. These elements are used for developing my work of existential exploration through unperceivable, momentary experiences that are prevalent in our daily lives. Also, by introducing an unfamiliar space, I will present a communication method used for conveying my message. In order to accomplish this purpose, I will categorize my works into common keywords such as “illuminated existence”, “journey to home”, “mind drawing” and “space for thought”. I will also introduce the following aspects of my paintings: production methods, external context, characteristics etc. In summary, this paper attempts to gain an artistic approach towards the existential essence by ceaselessly seeking the origin and the true nature of existence.
