환경오염에 의해 변형된 영모화(翎毛畵)

Abstract

An artist projects the spirit of the age to his work and sensitively observes and records the influential part of it into his creation. As such, a work of art serves as a means to communicate with the society, and thus has an important meaning. Moreover, the artist conveys his opinion to others, arousing universal sympathy. This paper seeks to study, record and express the seriousness of environmental problems through my art work. Since the mechanic materialism of the 17th century, humans have developed civilizations by sacrificing nature, and solidified their position as conquerors. This consequently brought about several environmental issues including global warming, radioactive contamination, climate changes, mutant species and more. In addition, pollution has become an urgent matter which affects the survivorship of humans in modern society. This paper investigates the background of the environmental problems in changes of human perception of nature, and subsequently looks for various attempts to overcome such dilemmas. Art is an academic field of comprehending, studying and expressing the world just as philosophy or science is. In modern society, environmental problems are not an inconsiderable issue to be overlooked, and require attention and public participation. Therefore, an approach to environmental issues through art is valuable, for it can alert the public to an idea and give them opportunity to consider it broadly. This paper searches for different attempts to define environmental problems in artwork through the analysis of artists Brandon Ballenge, and Robert and Shana Parke-Harrison. Most commonly used format of these artworks was pictures of birds and animals. Common inhabitants of the environment of the age are recorded in these paintings. Regarding how nature is intactly depicted in the works using the techniques of 형사(形似) and 사의(寫意), such features coincided with my intention to demonstrate the polluted nature of today as it is. I adopted this visual system of perception which existing animal paintings have, and added my own partial modification to it for a new approach. Mutant animal, arrow, signature, and pictogram devices were utilized as major figurative languages. Above all, mutation caused by radioactivity, one of the most hazardous creations of humanity, was adopted as a major subject matter for the work - arrows symbolically represent radioactivity. Furthermore, I imagined the appearance of the world’s inhabitants in the distant future, mutated due to radioactivity. After humans become extinct, only a few surviving organisms would survive to evolve in different forms to compose a new ecosystem. Fowls with altered body parts possess a new ecological nature, and animals in this altered format of painting look insecure in contradiction to picturesque and peaceful creatures of classical paintings. Altered features serve my intention to depict the natural environment which could soon be destroyed in the near future. Additional features of the altered animal painting format include the tiba(題跋) and the signature. To maximize the creative intention of the work and include further explanation, a pictogram was used instead of letters. The margins of the frame were left blank to provide layout. This paper looks into the environmental issues occurring through the change of human view of nature and seeks for measures to overcome them. Consequently, this paper solidifies the meaning of my productions. It further attempts to arouse the importance of environmental issues and bring attention to it by Pictures of mutant animals due to radioactive pollution.;작가는 예술 작품을 통해 시대를 반영하며 시대의 중요한 부분을 민감하게 관찰하고 기록해 작품에 투영한다. 이처럼 작품은 사회와 소통할 수 있는 수단이 될 수 있고 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 또한 작가는 보편적 공감을 통해 타인에게 자신의 생각을 전달 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 본인의 작품을 통해 환경 문제의 심각성에 대해를 연구하고 기록하며 전달함에 목적이 있다. 17세기 기계론적 세계관 이후 인간은 자연의 희생을 통해 문명을 발전시켜 왔으며 정복자로서의 위치를 확고히 해왔다. 인간이 자연의 우위에 선 이후 온난화, 방사능 오염, 기상이변, 돌연변이 등 여러 가지 환경 문제가 발생하였다. 결국 환경오염은 현대 사회에서 인류의 존속 위기에 직접적인 영향을 줄 정도로 중요한 문제가 되었다. 자연환경에 대한 인간의 인식변화를 통해 환경문제가 나타나게 된 배경을 살펴보고 환경문제의 원인과 이를 극복하기위한 다양한 시도들을 찾아보고자 하였다. 예술은 철학이나 과학과 마찬가지로 세계를 이해하고 연구, 표현하는 학문이다. 현대사회에서 환경문제는 중요한 사안이며 사람들의 관심과 참여를 필요로 하고 있다. 따라서 예술을 통한 환경문제의 접근은 사람들에게 폭넓게 사유할 수 있는 계기와 경각심을 일으킬 수 있다는 점에서 가치가 있다. 예술가 블랑동 발랭그(Brandon Ballengee)와 로버트와 샤나(Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison)의 작가 분석을 통해 예술 안에서 환경문제를 해석하는 다양한 시도를 연구하였다. 주된 작품의 형식으로는 영모화(翎毛畵)를 활용하였다. 영모화는 그 시대에 주변에서 흔히 서식하고 있는 동식물을 기록한 그림이었다. 영모화가 형사(形似)와 사의(寫意)를 통해 당시 자연을 가감 없이 표현한 것이 특징적인 부분이라고 보았을 때 오염된 현대의 자연을 그대로 기록하고 표현하고자 하는 본인의 의도와 부합했다. 그리고 기존 영모화의 시각적 인식체계를 그대로 차용하여 작품을 제작하였지만 부분의 변형을 통해 새로운 시도를 하고자 했다. 작품에는 돌연변이, 화살, 낙관과 픽토그램(Pictogram)이 주된 조형언어로 활용되었다. 먼저 인간이 발명한 가장 위험한 물질 중에 하나인 방사능으로 인한 생물의 돌연변이현상을 주된 작품의 소재로 하였다. 그리고 방사능의 표상으로서 화살을 상징적으로 이용하였다. 나아가 먼 미래에 방사능으로 인해 변형될 생물들의 모습을 가정해 보았다. 방사능으로 인해 인간이 멸종되고 그 이후 소수 살아남은 생명체들은 이전과는 다른 모습으로 진화되어 생태계의 일부분이 될 것이다. 신체의 특정 부위가 변형된 조류들은 전과 다른 생태학적 습성을 가지게 될 것이고 아름다운 자연과 평화로운 동물들을 소재로 한 고전적인 영모화와는 달리 변형된 영모화 속의 동물들은 불안하게 보일 것이다. 이는 현재와 미래의 파괴될 자연을 표현하고자 하는 본인의 의도가 담겨있다. 그리고 영모화의 형식 중에서 제발(題跋)과 낙관을 새롭게 변형했다. 작품의 표현 의도를 극대화하고 설명을 더하기 위해 문자 대신 픽토그램을 사용하였다. 이 픽토그램을 이용해 영모화를 현대적으로 해석하고자 하였다. 또한 화면을 구성함에 있어서 여백을 적극적으로 화면에 이용하였다. 본 논문은 인간의 자연관 변화를 통해 환경문제를 살펴보고 극복방안에 대해 연구해보았다. 또한 예술분야에서 환경문제가 어떻게 표현되고 있는지 논의해보았다. 이를 통해 궁극적으로 본인의 예술작품 제작의 의미를 공고히 하였다. 나아가 환경오염에 의한 돌연변이 동물표현으로 영모화를 새롭게 해석해 사람들에게 환경문제의 중요성과 관심을 일으키고자 하였다.
