This thesis is about explaining the theoretical basis and purpose of the artist’s work and discussing the future works based on the analysis and observation of the current works and process. We remember the past through leaving traces in space and remembering the objects and landscape that associate with the space. Through the layers of time, a series of images are stored and remembered. The works were inspired by the ‘unconscious remembrance’ seen in Henri Louis Bergson 『Matiére et Mémoire』 and Marcel Proust 『Á la recherche du temps perdu』. Bergson’s depiction of time is not about sequential time but about subjective time, however through consciousness, the past memory and present exist simultaneously. Likewise, the time seen in Proust 『Á la recherche du temps perdu』 exists when we encounter reminisce of the past in the current time and space. The works seen in the thesis reveal the unconscious remembrance through objects and landscape. Through unconscious remembrance, the memory of the past is realized in present going beyond the sequential time. In order to emphasize the effect of time, ‘perspective’ becomes an important element in the artist’s work. People continuously observe and understand others through visual stimulation. With visuals, a person absorbs information on the people he/she meets, objects encountered, and landscape one sees. The series of stored images are represented by layered structures through combination, parallelism, and superimposition. In order to represent the past and present in current space, the images are animated and repeated throughout different frames of works. The stacking of these images animates and creates multi-dimensions, hence encouraging the viewers to feel the movement in time. The movement and the animation show the passing of time. This phenomenon is same as if we are trying to remember objects, people, and landscape from the past. Memory is not just a two dimensional image of an instance but is made up of a series of instances and time. Our perspective follows these images through time as we try to remember. The artist uses charcoal to do a series of drawings. Despite the concurrent use of mixed media in the contemporary world, the artist chooses to use only the charcoal to freely communicate the idea. Charcoal allows the artist to form a close relationship with the drawing, enhancing the effect of communicating one’s idea to the viewers. Having charcoal drawings as the basis, the artist further expands the idea of unconscious remembrance through a series of video animation and installation. The artist’s works are largely divided in three fold: framework layer, movement layer, and expansion layer. Through a series of adding and subtracting layers, the traces of charcoal on the drawing board communicate the past. Like that of an old scroll, even when the time passes, memories are kept within the smudges and recognized. One of the thesis works was done on layers of life-size traces to show the changes in time through repetition and movement. As one walk through the layers of drawings, the images are activated and comes to life. The second part of the work emphasizes in depiction of time and liveliness through animating layers of images. In order to represent time in space, the charcoal drawings were put into digital frames to create a short animation. Each of the frames from the animation is displayed in the gallery next to the animation so that the viewers could experience different ways of encountering the past and present. Before the movie was made, the still images were put into a large spinning cylindrical device to animate. When the images were animated, a new space and time is experienced. The time of the past is activated and creates a new moment in time. Unlike the charcoal drawings, this installation livens the movements and shows that the past and present can exist simultaneously. Through experiencing the stills and the animation in different scales, the viewers intercept new spatial experience. The artist intention is to encourage real-time and real-scale experience by producing drawings that are of actual human scale so that the viewers can walk within the drawing boundary. This allows viewers to become a part of the drawing. During the encounter with the drawing, the empty space between the drawing and the viewer also becomes activated and becomes part of the exhibit. The empty space becomes the moment when the past memories and present time collapses allowing for an act of imagination and conscious thinking of the past. In conclusion, through studying the theory and relationship between memory and time, conceptualizing the idea, exploring different perspectives, and analyzing the works of the artist, the works of art allowed for the artist to reflect on herself. By using different medium, the artist expanded the ways of communicating with the viewers. The artist believes that the thesis has helped her to think about the foundation and purpose of her future works.;
