Abstract
Prosody is a comprehensive term encompassing intonation, duration, and pauses in speech that play crucial roles in communication. Research into the prosody of native speakers of the English language has identified discourse-level prosody as being functionally different from sentence-level prosody and has claimed that discourse-level prosody could be understood only within the context of discourse. Although there have been many studies done on the discourse-level intonation of native English speakers, not many studies have delved into the discourse-level intonation of second language (L2) learners. This study investigated (1) whether Korean learners of English use discourse-level prosody in L2 production as native speakers of English do, and (2) whether discourse-level prosody is also found in the Korean language, as is evident in the prosody of native speakers of English. Based on the Discourse Intonation (DI) model (Brazil et al., 1980; Brazil, 1977) and the concept of paratone (Brown, 1983) this study analyzed the onset pitch, sentence mean pitch and pause lengths to examine the paratone realization in discourse-level speech. 14 Korean learners of English who have not had an immersion experience in English speaking countries and 14 American English native speakers participated in this study. The study compared the production of the same 15 sentences in two types of reading materials. One is the sentence list material, which contains isolated sentences and the other is the discourse text material. The results showed that the English native participants clearly used discourse-level prosody which was not found in the sentence-level prosody. As for the Korean participants, they demonstrated the discourse-level prosody which was similar to that of the English participants in L1 text reading. However, they were limited in displaying the discourse-level prosody in L2 text reading. The Korean learners of English could not display the discourse-level prosody not only in the sentence mean pitch but also in the onset pitch and in the topic pauses. In conclusion, this thesis suggests that both Korean and English native speakers are able to display discourse-level prosody in L1 productions. However, the Korean learners of English experience difficulty in realizing the discourse-level prosody in L2 productions. This result may stem from the wider considerations in realizing discourse-level prosody such as context, discourse structures and topic shift.;운율 체계는 억양, 발화시간, 휴지(pause) 등을 포함하는 개념으로써 의사소통에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 왔다.
