탈북청소년의 과학관련 진로선택과정에 대한 내러티브 연구

Abstract

북한이탈주민의 남한 사회로의 유입 증가로 학습 시기에 해당하는 탈북청소년들의 입국도 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 이들의 사회 정착 및 적응 문제와 더불어 학업과 진로에 관한 연구가 많이 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 여전히 과학관련 진로선택에 대한 연구는 현재 전무한 상태이며, 특정한 진로로 나아가기 위해 탈북청소년들이 어떠한 과정을 경험하고 있는지에 대해 학업의 맥락에서 바라보고자 하는 연구는 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 과학관련 진로를 선택하고자 하는 탈북청소년들의 진로탐색 및 진로결정을 위한 학업 과정을 구체적으로 들여다보고 그들이 겪는 경험을 이해하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 탈북학생을 위한 대안학교의 고등학교 3학년 학생 중 간호학과를 희망한 경험이 있는 탈북청소년 6명을 대상으로 실시되었다. 이들의 과학관련 진로선택 과정을 알아보기 위해 면담을 실시하였으며 면담은 개별면담과 포커스 그룹 면담으로 이루어졌다. 면담은 모두 녹음하여 전사했으며, 이들의 경험을 구체적으로 들여다보기 위해 내러티브 연구 방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 탈북청소년들에게 있어 간호사라는 직업이 가지는 의미가 어떠한지 살펴보고자 하였다. 탈북청소년들이 간호사라는 진로를 선택하는 데에는 어린 시절 북한에서의 경험과 탈북의 경험, 남한 사회에서의 정착 등 탈북청소년으로서의 정체성에 의미를 부여하고 있음이 드러난다. 또한 탈북청소년들은 과학관련 진로선택 과정에서 남한 사회, 학교, 가족, 교사, 탈북공동체, 대학, 교회와 같이 그들이 위치한 다양한 사회적 공간들과 상호작용하며 긍정적인 영향을 받음과 동시에 한계를 나타내기도 했다. 더불어 본 연구에서는 과학관련 진로선택 과정에서 탈북청소년들이 주변화된 위치에서 수혜를 받는 피해자가 아닌, 행위자성(agency)을 드러내는 적극적인 주체로서의 측면을 보여주고자 하였다. 한편, 탈북청소년들은 자신이 선택한 진로에 의해서 과학에의 동기 부여를 얻는 모습을 보였다. 이들에게 있어 과학은 미래를 계획할 수 있게 하는 도구이자 해야만 하는 장벽이기도 했다. 본 연구의 결과는 탈북청소년들의 진로선택 과정에서 겪는 어려움들을 단순히 탈북청소년들의 학업능력 및 부적응의 문제로 간과할 수 없으며 사회구조적 요인에 의해서 영향을 받고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 탈북청소년들에게 있어 과학의 의미와 이들이 진로선택 과정에서 역동적으로 보여주는 행위자로서의 측면을 드러내고자 하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 과학교육의 맥락에서 탈북청소년들의 진로를 고려하는 방향성을 제시하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.;Due to increase in inflow of North Korean defectors into South Korea, entry of North Korean teenagers under learning period is constantly on the rise. In such circumstances, many researches are being conducted about their social settlement and adaptation as well as their academics and career path. However, research on science-related career is currently nonexistent, and no research has been conducted in an academic context as to what the defected teenagers go through in order to pursue a particular career. Thus, this study seeks to explore a particular school program for career exploration of defected teenagers who wish to pursue science-related career and understand their experience. The subjects of this study were 6 defected 3rd year high school students of alternative school who have wished to major in nursing. In order to understand the process of their science-related career selection, individual interview and focus group interview were conducted. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, and were analyzed using narrative research method to concretely examine their experience. The results of this study are as follows. First, we sought to investigate the implications of being a nurse for defected teenagers. It was revealed that defected teenagers selected nursing career to give meaning to the identity as North Korean defect and to their experiences in North Korea, experience of defecting, and settling into South Korean society. Moreover, while defected teenagers received positive effects through interaction in diverse social spaces such as school, family, school teacher, defector community, university, and church, they also showed limitations. In addition, this study aimed to reveal the defected teenagers as an active principal with agency, not as a victim that receives benefits in a community of defectors in the process of science-related career selection. Meanwhile, it was shown that defected teenagers were motivated by the career they selected. While science for them was a tool for making future plans, it was also an obstacle. The results of this study do not consider the difficulties experienced by defected teenagers in career selection process simply as the result of their academic ability or maladjustment but also as the result of social structural factors. Furthermore, this study sought to reveal the agency aspect of the defected teenagers in selecting their careers. Such result is expected to help in suggesting directivity in considering career paths of defected teenagers in the context of scientific education.
