Abstract
As understanding that foreigners working for Korean companies in Korea or other countries have hard time drawing up business documents, this study aims to figure out features of this particular genre, a business letter for cooperation , as in the types of business document, and conducted an analysis of genre on the business letter for cooperation . The study determined the business document as one single genre and analyzed this sub-genre, the business letter for cooperation , in order to verify the sub-genre’s generalized structure model, linguistic characteristics and formulaic expressions as well. As for the research material, the study used a total of 70 requests for cooperation which a Korean native speaker working for a Korean company had drawn up, and regarding the analysis method, the study adopted the ‘basic principles of genre analysis’ proposed by Bhatia (1993). In terms of the six levels of linguistic analysis, the study analyzed and proposed a generalized structure model and formulaic expressions of the business letter for cooperation as the linguistic features so that the study could verify the research inquiry. In addition, in order to get the results from the genre analysis conducted by this study approved, adding reliability, the study carried out in-depth interviews with employees of companies in Korea. According to the findings from the analysis on the 70 requests for cooperation either internal document or external document which the Korean native speaker had drawn up, it was learned that in the business letter for cooperation written in Korean, a total of six parts were observed, and they were ‘greetings’, ‘introduction’, ‘request’, ‘repetition of the request’, ‘detailed information’ and ‘request for a reply’. ‘Introduction’, ‘request’ and ‘repetition of the request’ appeared to use more than two sub-strategies respectively. Differences were found in the general structures of the internal and the external documents, and when it comes to the external documents, basically, they would go with this structure of ‘greetings – introduction – request - detailed information’ while the internal documents take up the simpler structure of ‘request – detailed information’. For the internal documents, it was considered general enough to leave out these parts, ‘greetings’ and ‘introduction’ but to make a brief description of what is to be requested. Both the external and the internal documents should have this part, ‘request’, and a sub-strategy of the inductive method to make a request after proposing ‘appropriate reasons’ was applied. ‘Detailed information’ was popular in the papers, and while the ‘request’ mentioned briefly what has to be requested, this ‘detailed information’ made separate descriptions on the request in detail by item. The study had in-depth interviews with the employees of companies in Korea in order to see if those findings from the genre analysis on the Korean native speaker’s business letter for cooperation are properly corresponding to features of a business letter for cooperation which is actually drawn up in a real workplace. During the interviews, the employees went over the findings of the study, and afterwards, the study confirmed that the findings were identical with those features of the business letter for cooperation used in the real field. That increased the reliability of this study. What the study has learned so far is considered to have a few implications as follows. The study figured out the characteristics of this genre, the business letter for cooperation , and due to that, this study can be used as a materials for you to teach learners of business Korean how to write and read a business letter for cooperation . With what the study has provided, you can teach the learners both the generalized structural features and linguistic features of the business letter for cooperation. Not only that, the study should be determined to be a practical teaching material in that it has collected and analyzed the business documents which are actually being shared in a real office. This study which had talked about the necessity of business document-drawing up will help foreign Korean-language leaners when they need to have a business with Koreans or when they try to find a job in Korean companies.;본 연구는 국내 및 국외의 한국 관련 기업에서 근무하고 있는 외국인들이 업무문서를 작성하는 것에 어려움을 느낀다는 점을 인식하고, 업무문서 중 협조문 장르 분석을 통해 협조문의 장르적 특징을 파악하는 것에 목적이 있다.
