Abstract

본 논문의 제목 ‘문제, 문제, 문제’는 연구 주제와 관련된 세 가지 문제의식을 가리킨다. 첫 번째 ‘문제’는 교통, 통신, 복제 기술 발달로 물리적 제약이 줄어듦에 따라서 개인이 겪을 수 있는 사건과 관련된다. 두 번째 ‘문제’는 기존의 사회 구조가 개인의 정체성 확립에 영향을 끼치며 나타나게 되는 주체의 ‘불안’이다. 그리고 마지막 ‘문제’는 역시 주체와 관련된 문제로 거대해진 사회 구조 앞에서 개인이 느끼는 좌절과 관련된 ‘피로’다. 삶에서 개인이 직면하는 갈등은 보편적 가치로 쉽사리 해결할 수 없다. 왜냐하면 이러한 갈등들은 개인마다 중요시하는 가치의 차이로 인해 발생하고 그 해결이 유보된 상태이기 때문이다. 본 연구는 일상에서 발견된 개인과 사회 간의 혼란 상황에 주목하며, 그 상황에 변화를 촉구했던 기존의 몇몇 미술활동을 분석한다. 그리고 본인의 작업에서 드러난 개인과 사회의 관계 인식이 위의 활동내용과 연계될 수 있는지 확인해 본다. 앞서 언급한 미술활동과 본인의 미술활동의 연결점은 전유를 재현 방식으로 사용했다는 점과 그것을 반성적 사고를 생성하기 위해 사용했다는 점에 있다. 본론 Ⅰ 속 ‘미술 속 반성적 사고의 전개와 그 이탈’은 추상미술의 전개과정에 대한 내용이다. 이것은 합리적 사고를 바탕으로 수행된 형상 소거의 배경 및 그 전개과정을 보여준다. 본인은 위의 논의를 통해 현재의 ‘다중적’ 시각이 본격적으로 시도된 역사적 전후배경과 그 활동 속에서 이루어지는 합리적 판단을 다루어 보고 싶었다. 즉 이 장은 합리성의 추구 과정에서 나타난 추상 미술의 등장부터 형상의 회복 경향이 나타나기 이전까지를 서술 범위로 두며, 추상에서 나타난 합리적 사고의 특징이 지금의 사고와 무엇이 달라졌는지에 대해 헤게모니의 입장에서 접근해 본다. 이후 진행되는 ‘주체를 소재로 한 두 가지 시각’은 개인과 사회 사이 발생한 문제 상황을 드러낸 작가들을 살펴본다. 이 장은 우선 소비 주체와 매스 미디어의 수용자에게 발견되는 주관성의 손상을 차용을 통해 나타낸 앤디 워홀 (Andy Warhol) 등 그 당시 작가들의 미술활동을 통해 전개된다. 그러고 나서 비슷한 시기 유럽의 ‘자생적’ 전통을 회복하자는 분위기 속에서 등장한 게르하르트 리히터(Gerhard Richter)의 입장을 살핀다. 본인은 본론 Ⅰ ‘A. 지금에 대한 재현’을 통해 미술 속 ‘비판적 사고’의 진행과정과 그에 적합한 ‘재현’을 담은 예를 보이고자 했다. 이것은 작업을 통해 ‘동시대’ 사회를 보는 바람직한 시각 형성에 기여하고자 한 본인의 작품 제작 목적이 앞선 활동들을 통해서도 이미 잘 실현됐기 때문이다. 본론 Ⅰ의 또 다른 장 ‘일상의 재전유: 비판적 시각을 담는 전유’에서는 매스 미디어 비평가 기 드보르(Guy Debord)가 참여한 국제 상황주의(Situationist International) 속 행동주의 전략을 중점적으로 다룬다. 이는 국제 상황주의 활동 이념을 확인해 본인의 작업에서 나타난 전유의 이론적 토대를 설명하기 위함이다. 또한 기존 권력의 정치도구로 시각적 이미지가 사용되는 것을 거부한 국제 상황주의자들과 이후의 행동주의자들의 활동을 통해 일상에 대한 미술의 전유가 어떤 상황에서 전개되는지를 살핀다. 이상의 논의를 토대로 마지막 장에서는 본인의 연구를 위한 자료를 수집하고 표현 방법을 분석하여 작업의 의의를 살핀다. 또한 회화 매체를 통해 시도되는 시각적 표현이 본인에게 어떤 의미를 일으키는지 알아본다. 전체적으로 본인의 작업은 브리콜라주를 통한 회화로 현재를 관찰하게 하며, 흩어진 사건을 종합해 내려는 시도이다. ‘오늘날의 사건사고’와 ‘불안한 개인들의 사회’로 나눠진 ‘작품 분석’에서는 사회와 개인 중 각각 한 측면에 집중하여 진행시킨 작품에 대한 설명을 시도한다. 본 논문은 개인이 주어진 사회 혹은 역사와 나 자신의 관계를 객관화하는 노력을 돕기 위한 시각적 표현에 대한 연구를 담고 있다. 다시 말해 본 연구는 개인이 사회를 보고, 인식하는 과정에서 생긴 갈등의 생성과 그 해결에 관해 바람직한 태도를 유지하는데 도움이 되고자 한다. 앞으로 본인은 이 연구내용을 토대로 보다 정제된 방식의 시각 성과를 위해 노력해 나갈 것이다.;The title of this thesis, Problem, Problem, Problem indicates three types of awareness on problems related to the research subject. The first problem is connected to incidents individuals can encounter in the decrease of physical barriers as the technological development of transportation, communication and reproduction gets higher. The second problem is the anxiety of the subject that comes out as an existing social structure affects the establishment of individual identity. And the last problem that is also relevant problem with the subject, is the fatigue that is related to individual frustrations in the gigantized social structure. Conflicts individuals face in their lives can't be easily resolved with universal values. It is because these conflicts are generated from the difference of values each individual put importance on and the solution for the conflicts are in the status of suspension. This research is focused on confused situations found in daily lives between individuals and the society, analyzes several exemplary art activities that urged changes in those circumstances. By doing so, I investigate whether the perception on the relationship between individuals and the society in my work can be associated with those art activities mentioned above. One of similarities between the art activities and my work can be found in the fact that both use appropriation as a way of representation and things both commonly reveal through appropriation is the self-awareness out of self-reflection emerged from inside of art. The development of self-reflection in art and its separation in the chapter I is about the development process of abstract art. It shows the background and process of removal of figuration that was executed based on rational thought. Through the discussion above, I wanted to talk about historical backgrounds before and after current trend of multi-layered perspective, reflective judgments made in those activities. So, this chapter takes a parameter of discussion that is from the emergence of abstract art in the process of seeking rationality to the pre-period of trend of figuration recovery. And it approaches features of rational thoughts in abstract art, investigating what is dissimilar to ideas of today in the perspective of hegemony. In the next chapter, two perspectives on subjectivity, I talk about artists who reveal problematic situations created between individuals and the society. In this chapter, I will discuss about Andy Warhol - who used appropriation by focusing on the damage of subjectivity found in consumers and customers of mass media and other artists in the same period. Afterward I move to the perspective of Gerhard Richter who came out in the mood of recovery of autochthonic tradition in Europe during the similar period. Through part A. 'representation on now' in the chapter I, I try to show the procession of critical thought in art and examples of its appropriate 'representation'. This is because the purpose of my work that tries to contribute the creation of proper perspective on 'contemporary' society was already successfully realized through previous art activities. Another chapter in chapter 1, 're-appropriation of daily life: appropriation with critical views' I discuss about the activism strategy of Situationist International in which mass media critic Guy Debord participated. This is to explain about theological foundation of appropriation in my work by examining the idea of Situationist International. In addition, seeing activities of Situationist International that refused the use of visual image as political instruments for existing authorities and subsequent movement of activists, I investigate under what circumstances appropriation of art on daily life has been developed. Based on discussions above, in the last chapter, I explore the meaning of my work by analyzing my research and expression methods. Also, I inquire what visual expression through painting means to me. In short, my work is an attempt to combine scattered incidents together, observing the present via painting with bricolage. In work analysis that is divided into Today's issues and Society of anxious individuals, I try to explicate about pieces that I made, focusing on one or the other among the society and individuals. This thesis contains the research on visual expression that is to assist an endeavor for objectification of the relationship between given society or history and individuals. In other words, this investigation aims to support maintenance of proper attitudes towards conflicts that are generated as individuals observe and understand the society- and their solutions. In future, I will continue to put my effort to make visual achievements in more refined way based on the discussion in the thesis.
