십자가의 상징성을 통한 종교적 체험 표현연구

Abstract

인류의 역사에는 동서고금을 막론하고 신(神)의 존재를 믿고 숭배하는 일이 있어왔다. 역사적인 명소들에는 신을 숭배하는 유적들이 많으며, 세계 여러 나라에서는 여전히 신의 탄생일을 기념하고 있다. 인간은 누구나 살면서 사회 문화적인 체험, 지식적인 배움 등을 통해 신에 대해 접해 보았을 것이다. 그리고 대부분의 경우, 인간은 살아 있는 것이 허무하거나 고통스럽다고 느낄 때, 혹은 스스로의 힘으로 어찌할 수 없는 절망적인 상태에 있을 때에 신을 찾기 시작한다. 연구자는 이 연구를 통해서 삶에 있어서의 많은 문제들을 스스로 해결할 수 없는 절망적인 한계를 가진 인간에게 희망을 주는 길로써 신에 대해 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기를 마련해 보고자 하였다. 이 연구에서의 신(神)은 특별히 기독교에서의 신으로 한정하여 진행하려한다. 인간은 생리적 욕구, 안전 욕구, 소속감과 애정욕구 등 여러 가지 욕구를 가지고 있으며, 이런 욕구들을 충족시키기 위해 노력한다. 많은 이들이 이러한 노력의 일환으로 돈, 권력, 인기, 명예 등을 추구하지만 이런 것들을 얻게 된다하여 삶의 모든 문제가 해결되지는 않음을 발견하게 된다. 이렇게 절망적인 한계를 가진 인간은 인간의 한계를 초월한 존재인 신을 찾아 종교를 가져왔다. 신은 인간이 의지하기 위해 찾을 수 있는 존재인 것이다. 기독교에서는 인간의 행위가 스스로 한계를 극복할 수 없는 절망으로부터의 구원에 아무런 영향을 미칠 수 없다고 보기에 신에게서 희망을 찾는다. 기독교에서 십자가는 신과 인간을 연결하는 유일한 길로써, 인간에 대한 신의 사랑을 의미하는 대표적인 상징이기도 하다. 연구자 역시 삶의 여러 가지 문제에 대한 절망으로 시작하여 신을 찾게 된 개인적인 배경을 바탕으로 이 연구를 시작하게 되었다. 이 연구는 십자가를 주제로 한 일곱 개의 작품 표현을 통해 진행되었다. 작품 I <그 때>는 공허함, 슬픔이 느껴지는 커다란 눈이 바라보고 있는 십자가를 통해 인간의 절망적인 상태와 이 인간이 찾는 신에 대한 갈급함에 대해 표현 한다. 작품 II <재가 되었을 때>는 인간의 유한함과 허무함을 다 타고 남은 가벼운 재라는 재료에 담아 신을 찾는 인간의 마음에 대해서 이야기 하고자 하였다. 작품 III <그곳을 찾아>는 신을 향해 가는, 자신의 한계에 절망한 인간의 지친 발자국 소리와 배경이 되는 성가를 통해 삶의 여러 가지 문제를 해결하기 위해 살다가 지친 인간이 신을 찾는 모습을 표현하였다. 작품 IV <세상의 소금>은 오랜 시간 햇빛 아래에서 정제된 후 드러나는 소금으로 만들어진 작은 십자가를 통해, 신을 찾는 인간의 간절한 마음과, 그 인간에게 꼭 필요한 신의 사랑을 은유하고자 했다. 작품V <그 사랑의 흔적>은 철의 표면에 붉은 빛으로 흘러내리는 표면처리효과를 통해, 신이 인간을 대신하여 십자가에서 고통 받으시고 땀과 피를 흘리신 흔적을 표현하여 인간에 대한 신의 사랑과 용서를 표현하고자 하였다. 작품 VI <지혜>에서는 인간이 종종 지혜를 얻고자 참고하는 소재인 책 위에 십자가의 형태가 나타났다 사라지는 것의 반복을 통하여 어렴풋이 나타나는 십자가로 신을 붙잡고 있고 싶은 마음을 표현 하였다. 작품 VII <내가 찾은 것>은 신이 인간을 사랑하는 성경구절의 내용을 촘촘히 새겨 넣은 작은 은 십자가를 통해 신의 인간에 대한 사랑에 대해 생각해볼 수 있도록 하고자 한다. 확대경을 설치함으로, 이 십자가에 새겨진 작고 촘촘한 글을 읽어 보려하는 심리를 유도하여 그것에서 신이 인간을 얼마나 사랑하는지에 대한 인간의 갈망을 느껴보게 하고자 하였다. 삶의 여러 가지 절망적인 한계 상황에서 그 상황을 이겨내기 위해 어떤 선택을 하느냐는 말 그대로 어디까지나 개인의 선택적 문제이다. 신을 찾거나 믿는 여부도 개인의 의지와 선택에 달려있는 것이다. 신의 존재여부에 대한 증명과 설명은 수많은 철학자들 사이에서도 오랜 시간 동안 논쟁이 되어왔다. 그렇지만 본 연구에 표현된 작품들을 통해서 누구나 한 번쯤 생각해 보았을 신의 존재에 대해 다시 한 번 느껴보고, 여러 가지 절망에 빠진 인간에게 희망을 줄 수 있는 길로써 신에 대해 생각해 보는 것에 이 연구의 의의가 있다.;In history, there have been believes and worship for gods across the ages and in all countries of the world. There are lots of remains worshiping gods in famous historical places and celebrations of natal days of gods till nowadays. Every human being meets their gods through social and cultural experiences or their knowledges. And most of all, humans start to seek their gods when they feel empty and agony or they meet some desperate circumstances but there is nothing to do deal with them. In this study, the researcher will make an opportunity of thinking the god as a pathway to the hope for humans with this desperate finitude and incapable of solving lots of problems in their lives. In this study, the scope of god will be God in Christianity and proceed the study. There are various desires for human beings such as physiological need, safety need, sense of belongingness and love needs and they try to fulfill all of these needs and desires. In terms of these efforts, we seek so many things such as properties, powers, popularities and honors but even when we get these, we finally find that we can not solve all of our problems in our lives. As a human with this desperate finitude, we hope to find our God, as an existence transcending that human finitude and have been believing in religion trying to get out of this finitude. God is an existence available to be found by human beings for relying on. In Christianity, it is considered that human being's behaviors and actions can't effect on the salvation from despairs which won't be overcome by human being itself. Therefore these result in seeking the hope from god. In Christianity, the Cross is the only pathway connecting human and God, and the representative symbol of love of God for human being. This study is proceeded as based on personal experience of seeking God from the despairs due to various problems in own life. In this study, it is proceeded with 7 art works with Cross theme. <Cross I> expresses the desperate status of human and its desiring God whom human wants through a huge empty and sad eye looking at the Cross. <Cross II> means human's mind seeking God with the image of praying hands with despair and pain together. Through exhausted tramping sound of desperate human by his own finitude and background hymns, work 3 <Cross III> expresses the images of human seeking God, who is exhausted from struggling to solve various problems in his life. Work 4, <Cross IV> has a metaphor of the human's ernest wish seeking God and the love of God which is essential for those humans through a small salt Cross revealed after purification by sunlight for a long time. <Cross Ⅴ> expresses the trace of sweat and blood of God from the agony by Cross instead of humans through the effect of red light flowing down on the iron surface and is also intended to express the love and forgiveness of God for humans. In <Cross Ⅵ>, it expresses the mind wanting to hold God through the dimmed cross with repeating the cross shape on-off effects on the book as a representative of the reference for the human's wisdom. In <Cross ⅥI>, a small silver Cross with some biblical verses about God's love for humans as very finely carved on it is intended to think the love of God for humans. With magnifying glass, it leads to the human mind for reading these tiny fine letters carved on the Cross and through this treatment, it makes the feeling of humans' desiring God's love for the humans. In the desperate limited status in various lives, as literally, it is a matter of an optional issue for each individual that which method she/he would select to overcome those problems. To seek gods or to believe, it depends on an individual's will and selection. It has been debated for a long time to approve and/or explain the god among so many philosophers. In this study, however, it has a signification through the works above mentioned, you will feel the existence of God who may think in their lives and think the God as a pathway for hope on humans in various despairs.
