뮤지컬「에비타」분석을 통한 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 음악적 특징연구

Abstract

뮤지컬 「에비타」(Evita, 1978)는 당시 흔히 볼 수 없었던 소재인 아르헨티나 영부인의 일생을 다룬 전기적인 뮤지컬이다. 기존 뮤지컬의 형식에서 벗어나 한 여인의 일생만을 그렸음에도 불구하고「에비타」는 토니상 7개 부분을 비롯하여 로렌스 올리비아 상, 영국작곡가 협회 상, 뉴욕 드라마 비평가 상, 드라마데스크 상 등을 수상하며 작품성과 흥행성 모두를 석권하였고 이후에는 영화로도 제작되기에 이른다. 본 논문은 전기적인 뮤지컬에서 국민들의 정서를 표현해 주기 위하여 음악적으로 나타난 특징들이 실존인물의 캐릭터와 어떤 방식으로 연결되었으며 웨버의 곡이 극의 흐름에 따라 어떻게 변하고 있는지 분석, 연구 하고 그의 음악적 특징을 도출하였다. 뮤지컬 「에비타」의 분석을 통해 알아본 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 등장인물의 유도동기를 활용하여 음악적인 통일성을 부여하였고 여기에서 사용된 인물의 유도동기는 화성과 조성, 음정, 그리고 다양한 리듬의 사용을 통하여 각 인물의 심리적 상황을 설명하고 있다. 둘째, 에비타의 고향인 아르헨티나의 정서를 음악적으로 표현하기 위하여 아르헨티나의 대표적 민속음악인 탱고를 비롯하여 스페인의 플라멩고, 브라질의 삼바 등 라틴 음악 계열의 음악적 장르들을 다양하게 수용하고 있다. 셋째, 반복되는 선율의 경우 다양한 장르의 리듬을 사용하여 곡의 구성에 변화를 준 것을 들 수 있다. 펑키, 왈츠, 락 등 장르간의 음악을 혼합하여 사용함으로써 넘버의 음악적 다양성을 추구하였을 뿐 아니라 관객들에게 다양한 음악적 변화를 감상할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있다. 넷째, 비화성음의 두드러진 활용이다. 이는 화성적 색채감을 다양하게 해줄 뿐 아니라 긴장과 이완을 유도하는 고전적 선율기법을 따르고 있는 것이라 볼 수 있다. 정리하면 허구의 인물이 아닌 실존인물의 삶을 뮤지컬로 다루었다는 점과 인물의 심리, 성격, 배경, 분위기 등을 나타내주는 유도동기를 사용하여 전체적인 음악에 통일성을 주고 있다는 점이 특징이다. 또한 국민들의 정서를 표현해 주기위해 라틴 음악 계열의 장르들을 다양하게 수용 하여 민속적 색채를 담아냈다. 결론적으로 앤드류 로이드 웨버는 뮤지컬에서 다룰 수 있는 소재의 영역을 넓히며 음악적 어법을 확대시킨 작곡가로 다양한 음악적 시도들을 통해 뮤지컬 발전에 기여하였다.;The musical, “Evita (1978)” is a biographical musical of Argentinean first lady, which was quite unusual material. Even though it has been away from the former musical frame and focused on a woman’s life, Evita swept cinematic quality and popularity at the same time with seven parts in Tony Award, Laurence Olivier Award, British composer Association Award, New York Drama Critics Award, Drama Desk Award, and so on. Finally, the musical was reborn as a movie. In this paper, it investigated the way musical characteristics connected with characters of real persons which were used to express the nation’s sentiments in the biographical musical, and analyzed the changing of Webber’s music depend on the story flow to derive his musical features. According to the analysis of Evita, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical characteristics are as follows: First, he utilizes the characters’ leitmotif to offer musical unification. The leitmotif used in here is explaining each character’s psychological state through chord, tonality, key, and various rhythms. Second, to express Evita’s homeland, Argentinean sentiment musically, it accommodates a variety of music in Latin genre such as flamenco in Spain, samba in Brazil as well as the most representative traditional music in Argentina, tango. Third, for repetitive melodies, diverse rhythms from many genres provide alterations to the composition of the songs. By combining inter-genre music like funky, waltz, rock music, and etc, it does not only pursue the number’s musical diversity but also does provide audience an opportunity to experience colorful musical changes. Fourth, non-harmonic tones were remarkably used. This follows classical melody techniques which induce tension and relaxation, and varies harmonic color. In conclusion, there are two features in this musical; one is, not a fictional, a real person’s story became a biographical musical and the other one is overall music was offered unity by using leitmotif that express characters minds, personality, background, and mood. In addition, many genres in Latin family were accepted to present the nation’s emotions while having ethnological tone. Enfin, Andrew Lloyd Webber is a composer who expands the borders of materials for musical and musical phraseology contributing to the musical developments through multifarious musical attempts.
