Part I. Mechanistic Insight into the Nucleophilic Reaction Using Mn(IV)-Peroxo Species: Conversion to Mn(V)-Oxo The nucleophilic reactivity of synthetic mononuclear nonheme Mn(IV)-peroxo species, [MnIV(TAML)(O2)]2- (1) was performed and the large Hammett ρ constant of +6.4 was obtained indicating the strong nucleophilic character of the Mn(IV)-peroxo moiety. Interestingly, the addition of aldehyde or benzoyl chloride to the Mn(IV)-peroxo species produced the corresponding the Mn(V)-oxo species, [MnV(TAML)(O)]– (2) via homolytic O-O bond cleavage. The conversion rate was dependent on the amount of added substrates suggesting that the rate-determining steps relying on the binding of benzoyl chloride to the MnIV-peroxo moiety. The use of NO2-benzaldehyde, which basically showed the lowest reactivity among para-substituted benzaldehyde allowed us to detect the presumed Mn(III)-acylperoxo species, [MnIII(TAML)(O2COR)]2– (3), demonstrating that the conversion reaction rates from 1 to 2 was governed by the formation rate of Mn(III)-acylperoxo species Part II. A Mononuclear Nonheme Manganese(V)-Oxo Complex Binding Redox-Inactive Metal Ion: Remarkable Enhancement of Electron Transfer Properties The role of redox-inactive metal ion is the subject of substantial current interest due to their elusive function in Photosystem II, where manganese-calcium-oxygen eluster is capable of accomplish the oxygen evolution via O-O bond formation from water. Synthetic mononuclear nonheme manganese(V)-oxo, [MnV(TAML)(O)]- and Sc3+ ion-binding manganese(V)-oxo, [MnV(TAML)(O)]--Sc3+ have been successfully characterized using various spectroscopic techniques. Manganese(V)-oxo complex which was originally unreactive toward organic substrates despite the high oxidation state of metal center, was aroused to exhibit the greatly enhanced reactivities in oxygen atom transfer reactions in the presence of Sc3+ ion. Electron transfer property rationalized by significantly positive shifted redox potential of Sc3+ ion-binding manganese(V)-oxo as compared to the native manganese(V)-oxo.-
