The Impact of Foreign Aid and Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth

Abstract

Using panel data analysis, this study examines the impact of foreign aid, foreign direct investment (FDI) and their interaction on economic growth in six Southeast Asia countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines and Viet Nam) over the period of 1991 - 2011. In particular, the study discusses complementarity or substitutability between foreign aid and FDI on economic growth. The empirical results present the negative influence of both foreign aid and foreign direct investment on economic growth of the Southeast Asia countries. This region’s regression model resulted in foreign aid and FDI having positive influence on economic growth only when they are combined together, implying that foreign aid and FDI are complementary sources for foreign capital in Southeast Asia.;본 논문은 패널 데이터 분석기법을 사용하여 대외원조 및 외국인 직접 투자 (FDI)와 그들의 상호작용이 21 년 (1991- 2011)간 동남아시아의 6 개 국가 (캄보디아, 인도네시아, 라오스, 미얀마, 필리핀, 베트남)의 경제성장에 미친 영향에 대해 분석했다. 특히 동 연구를 통해 경제성장과 관련된 대외원조 및 외국인 직접투자의 상호보완성과 대체성에 대해 논의하고자 했다. 실증분석을 통해서는 대외원조와 외국인 직접투자가 동남아시아 경제성장에 미치는 부정적 영향들을 제시했다. 이 지역에 대한 회귀 분석결과, 대외원조와 외국인 직접투자가 동시에 이루어질 경우에만 긍정적 영향을 야기했는데 이는 대외원조 및 외국인 직접투자가 동남아시아 자본시장에서 상호 보완적 요소임을 암시한다.
