뮤지컬 <캣츠>의 음악분석에 의한 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

브로드웨이 뮤지컬은 1950년대 뮤지컬의 황금기를 지나, 1970년대에는 반항적인 내용의 록 음악을 이용한 새로운 작품들이 등장한다. 1980년대 초기에는 대부분의 뮤지컬 작품들이 실패를 겪는데, 이 시기에 런던에서는 작곡가 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 뮤지컬 <캣츠>가 발표되며 크게 흥행하고, 이를 기점으로 런던에서 성공을 거둔 뮤지컬 작품들이 브로드웨이에 입성하기 시작하며 80년대 중반부터 큰 규모의 뮤지컬 작품들이 연이어 등장한다. 이와 같이 1980년대에는 뮤지컬 산업이라는 표현이 등장할 정도로 뮤지컬이 대형화되고, 영국과 미국에서 성공을 거둔 작품의 해외 투어가 이루어짐으로써 뮤지컬은 전 세계인이 즐기는 보편적인 장르로 거듭나게 된다. <캣츠>는 세계적으로 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 작품으로, 기존 뮤지컬과 달리 인간이 아닌 고양이들을 주인공으로 하여 인간의 잠재된 내면세계와 사후의 새로운 삶이라는 다소 심오한 소재를 다루고 있다. <캣츠>는 웨스트엔드와 브로드웨이에서 롱런한 작품으로 기네스북에 오르는 등 뮤지컬의 다양한 기록을 만들어내었다. 또한 런던, 뉴욕, 파리 등 세계적인 주요 뮤지컬 시상식에서 작품상, 작곡상 등을 수상하였으며, 이후 브로드웨이의 작품의 흐름에 영향을 주어 대형 뮤지컬들의 연이은 등장을 불러왔다. 본 논문은 뮤지컬 <캣츠>의 음악 분석을 통해 동물을 소재로 하여 뮤지컬에서 다루기 어려운 주제를 음악이 뮤지컬의 각 요소들과 어우러져 어떻게 표현하였는지 분석하였다. 이를 통해 이 작품에 나타난 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 음악적 특징을 무엇인지 연구하였다. 음악 분석은 1998년 런던에서 제작된 오리지널 캐스팅의 공연 영상자료의 뮤지컬 넘버 20곡을 기준으로 하였으며, 각 뮤지컬 넘버의 조성, 화성진행, 박자, 템포, 리듬, 악기편성에 따른 음색, 가사에 따른 음악의 표현방법, 음악의 기능적 요소 등을 분석하였다. <캣츠>의 음악 분석을 통해 나타난 웨버의 음악적 특징은 다음과 같다. 이 작품은 원작인 T.S.엘리엇의 <지혜로운 고양이가 되기 위한 지침서>를 그대로 가사에 사용하였는데, 작품의 중심이 되는 가사로 이루어진 곡들은 내용이 분명하게 전달될 수 있도록 멜로디 라인을 순차 상행하거나 하행 진행하는 등 복잡하지 않게 구성하거나, 레치타티보 등의 음악적 요소를 사용하여 가사의 의미를 강조하였다. 또한 각각 다른 음색을 지닌 악기들을 개성강한 각각의 고양이들에게 부여하여 섬세한 몸짓, 표정, 안무를 완벽하게 맞아 떨어지게 맞추어 묘사하였다. 그리고 원작에 표현된 고양이 캐릭터들의 성격과 특색을 그대로 극으로 옮겨와 블루스, 스윙재즈, 록 등의 음악 장르와 조성, 템포, 리듬의 형태 등 음악적 요소를 통해 묘사하였다. 마지막으로 반음계적 진행과 잦은 조성변화, 장.단조의 대조 등 여러가지 음악적 요소들로 이루어진 특정 모티브의 잦은 등장과 변주, 조합으로 전체적인 극의 분위기를 조성하며 극 속에서의 유기적인 통일성을 보여주었고, 다음에 올 극 속의 상황 또는 사건을 암시해주는 역할을 하였다. 이렇게 웨버는 다양한 음악 구성으로 극을 지루하지 않게 이끌었으며, 음악이 언어의 기능을 하여 가사를 모르더라도 음악만을 통해 극의 내용과 캐릭터에 대한 이해력을 높여주어 넓은 연령대의 관객들, 그리고 외국인 관객들까지 공감할 수 있어 대중적으로 큰 사랑을 받았다. 현재 국내에서 창작뮤지컬에 대한 관심과 제작이 활발하게 이루어지고 있지만, 그에 앞서 선행되어야 할 예술성과 대중성을 함께 갖춘 뮤지컬 음악에 대한 연구와 체계화된 자료가 미비한 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 논문이 앞으로 국내 뮤지컬계의 발전을 위한 뮤지컬 음악 연구에 도움이 되길 바란다.;After the golden age of musical in the 1950s, new musicals using rock music with rebellious stories started appearing on Broadway in the 1970s. In the early 1980s, most of the Broadway musicals failed to succeed. During this period, however, Andrew Lloyd Webber, a composer, and Trevor Nunn, a musical director presented a musical titled <Cats> in London, and it became greatly successful. With this as a momentum, other musicals having achieved success in London started entering Broadway, and starting from the mid 1980s, large-scaled musicals appeared consecutively on Broadway. In the 1980s, musicals became so enlarged that an expression ‘Musical Industry’ first appeared, and worldwide tours were accomplished for musicals that were a success in Britain and the U.S.A. This allowed musicals to turned into a general genre which people from all around the world could easily enjoy. <Cats> is globally loved by those all around the world and it is one of Andrew Lloyd’s musical where unlike the existing musicals, the main characters are not of human but of cats and it deals with human beings’ latent inner world and a new life after death, which is a rather profound subject matter. As one of the longest runs on West End and Broadway, <Cats> has made various records in the history of musical including ones in the Guinness Book of Records. Additionally, Cats won the Best Musical Awards and Best Composition Awards, etc. in leading award ceremonies held in London, New York and Paris. Cats also greatly influenced the trend of Broadway musicals, leading continuous appearances of large-scaled musicals. Through musical analysis, the subject study analysed how the Musical <Cats> dealt with such a difficult theme, which the existing musicals rarely did, by basing the musical on animals and how the music was expressed in harmony with every musical elements. As such, this study also investigated the musical characteristics of Andrew Lloyd Webber appearing in this work. As a standard, this musical analysis used the musical number 20 songs of the original casting performance video materials produced in London in year 1988 and this study analyzed the tonality, harmonic progress, beat, tempo and rhythm of each musical number, and its tones depending on instrument formation, method of the musical expressions depending on lyrics and functional musical elements, etc. Through musical analysis on Cats, Webber’s musical characteristics are as follows; This work used the exact lyrics from T. S. Eliot’s <The Old Possum’s Book for Practical Cats>, and to clearly deliver the contents of the music that is formed of lyrics(core of the work), to emphasize the meaning of the lyrics, the music was composed in a rather uncomplicated way through sequential upward or downward motions of melody lines, or by using musical elements such as recitativo. Also, by giving each of the cats with strong personalities musical instruments with different tone, the delicate gestures, facial expressions and choreography were perfectly described. The personalities and characteristics of the cats in the original work were exactly described through music genres, like blues, swing jazz and rock, etc. and through musical elements in forms like tonality, tempo and rhythm, etc. Lastly, the overall atmosphere of the play was composed with frequent appearance of particular motive composed of several musical elements such as chromatic progression, frequent tonal changes and contrast of major and minor keys, etc. and with variations and harmonies. By doing this, an organic unity were shown and this played a role in alluding situations or events that are to come next. In this way, with composition of various music, Webber led his play without being tedious. And since the music functions as a language, even if the audiences did not know the lyrics, they were able to raise their understanding on the stories and characters through music and thus, all age groups and even foreign audiences were able to symphatize with the play hence, leading to a great public popularity. Currently, interest and production on creative musicals are actively being made in Korea. That said, in reality, there is a lack of research and systematized materials on musical music which possesses both artistry and popularity. Therefore, one hopes that this study will be of help to musical music research for the development of future musicals in Korea.
