국내 신문에 나타난 간호사 관련 주제분석

Abstract

현대 사회에서 간호사에 대한 대중의 인식 형성에 대중매체가 미치는 영향은 크다고 볼 수 있다. 특히 신문은 대중이 가장 신뢰하는 매체이며 대중은 신문을 통해 유익한 정보를 얻고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 대중이 비교적 많이 접하는 신문에 투영되는 간호사는 어떻게 표현되어 왔는가를 탐색하고자 질적주제분석을 적용하였다. 본 연구의 분석대상 신문은 2003년부터 2012년까지 발간된 국내의 대표적인 신문인 경향신문, 한겨레신문, 동아일보, 조선일보이며, 신문의 제목, 본문, 기사작성자에 ‘간호’가 명시되어 있는 기사를 대상으로 수집하였다. 자료수집기간은 2012년 8월부터 2013년 9월까지였으며, 4가지의 종이신문 기사를 PDF 또는 TEXT 형식으로 수록하고 있는 인터넷 데이터베이스를 이용하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 신문기사는 Braun과 Clarke (2006)이 제시한 6단계의 질적 주제분석방법을 적용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 간호와 관련한 기사를 분석한 결과 ‘소명의식을 가지고 환자를 돌봄’, ‘전문직으로서의 역할을 확고히 함’, ‘도덕적 책임을 회피함’, ‘업무대비 열악한 대우를 받음’, ‘유망직종으로 부상함’ 등의 5가지 주제가 도출되었다. 본 연구에서 간호사는 신체적, 정신적으로 취약한 환자의 입장이 되어 가족을 대하듯 정성껏 지원하였으며, 환자의 질병회복과 건강증진을 위해 헌신적인 돌봄을 제공하면서 환자에게 도움을 주는 간호사로서의 삶에 보람을 느끼고 있었다. 환자에게 질 높은 간호서비스를 제공하기 위하여 전문지식과 기술을 지속적으로 연마하였고 때로는 전문직 단체 활동을 통해 간호사의 권익증진활동에 참여하였다. 또한 환자가 건강행위를 실천할 수 있도록 지지체계를 형성하였고 의료혜택을 받지 못하는 사람들의 건강을 위해 기부하는 삶을 실천하는 등 사회적 책임을 다하는 전문성을 나타냈다. 그러나 한편으로 도덕적, 윤리적 가치판단 능력이 결여되어 직무에 태만하거나 불미스러운 사건에 연루되는 등 부정적인 이미지를 나타내기도 하였다. 간호사는 사회적으로 실무분야에서의 전문성과 간호서비스의 효율성을 인정받아 발전가능성이 높은 직업으로 평가를 받고 있었으며, 여성의 고유영역에서도 벗어나고 있어 유망한 직업으로 간주되었다. 그러나 때로는 간호사의 역할에 상응한 사회적 지위를 획득하지 못하여 열악한 환경에서 근무하며 신체적, 정신적으로 소진되고 법적으로 보호를 받지 못하고 폄하되고 있어 간호사의 지위 향상에도 불구하고 법적, 정책적으로 뒷받침이 되지 않음을 나타냈다. 본 연구의 결과는 지금까지 간호사의 이미지를 대변해 온 열정과 헌신의 의미를 내포하는 소명의식을 가지고 돌봄을 제공하고 있음을 지지하고 있다. 무엇보다 최근 10년 동안 취약계층을 대상으로 교육 및 지지서비스를 제공하는 등 간호전문직의 역량이 부각되었지만 한편으로 도덕적 책임을 회피하는 간호사의 모습을 통해 전문직 윤리가 강화될 필요성을 제시하였다. 또한 간호사는 여성의 직업으로 더 이상 국한되지 않고 유망직종이라는 변화를 나타냈지만 한편으로 적절한 대우를 받지 못하고 있다는 모순점을 드러냈다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과는 추후 바람직한 간호사 이미지를 창출하기 위한 전략에 필요한 근거 자료로서의 의미를 제시하였다는 데 의의가 있다.;In the modern society, mass media play a very important role in the formation of the public awareness for nurses. Especially, newspapers are the most trusted media by public and the public is gaining valuable information through it. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore by a qualitative thematic analysis how nurses are being expressed in newspapers. The subjects of analysis were Korean leading newspapers published between 2003 to 2012. The newspapers are named Kyunghyang Shinmun, Hankyoreh Shinmun, Dong-A Daily News and Chosun Ilbo. All articles titled with "nursing", containing "nursing" in text or/and "nursing" in writer’s name were collected. The author collected articles from the newspapers' internet database in either PDF form or TEXT form. The articles were analyzed by Braun and Clarke (2006)'s qualitative thematic analysis. Through the analysis of data, five themes were extracted as shown below: "attending a patient with calling", "solidifying the professional nursing", "avoiding moral responsibility", "being treated inferiorly despite the work importance", "emerging as a promising career". As found in the analysis of data, nurses treated the patients with emotional instability like their family. For patients' recovery and better health, they were committed to work for the patients. Also, they felt worth being a nurse. For providing a high-quality service, they continuously improved their expertise and knowledge. Sometimes, they promoted the rights of nurses by being active in professional activities. Nurses built a supportive system in order to keep their patients health behaviors and donated to patients who could not receive medical care in order to keep their health. All of them showed an image of a professional nurse. On the other hand, sometimes nurses showed negative images because of a lack of moral and ethical value judgment. For example, they showed a negligence to duties or were involved in unsavory incidents and others. The profession of a nurse was recognized as a promising career by their specialization in the practical area and the result of social effects. Furthermore, the career got out of women’s classical area and was emerged as a promising career. Some nurses showed poor working conditions because the value of their work was not connected with their social status. They were tired of such conditions, without protection and sometimes be denigrated. Though the profession of a nurse was recognized by the society, there is neither support from legal nor policy. Results of this study support the viewpoint that nurse are committed to work for their patients. This symbolizes the image of nurses and includes the meaning of passion and commitment. Especially, the ability of nursing professional to provide education and supportive service to vulnerable members of the society was highlighted during these 10 years. On the other hand, the images of avoiding moral responsibility showed the necessity of professional ethics. Furthermore, the career got out of women’s classical area and was emerged as a promising career. However, the value of work did not receive the appropriate treatment. In conclusion, the significance of this study is to show a strategy for the creation of a proper image of nurses.
