한국 다큐멘터리 영화에 재현된 무당 연구

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing how shamans have been portrayed in independent documentary films and observing their impact on society. When we take an overall look at the deep connection between Shamanism and the Korean culture and the stress on the use of visual imagery in modern society, we realize that the portrayal of shamans in various media is considered an important subject of study. However, there is a tendency in the majority of entertainment media to encourage prejudice and misunderstanding about shamans in the public. Keeping this in mind, we concentrated on visual documentary films, which were more objective in their treatment of the subject. Through the study of 4 independent documentary films about shamans, we took various approaches to examine the various images of real shamans and the awareness of Korean society about shamans. The concrete content of our research is as follows. First, in part II, we took an historical approach to examine how our perception of shamans and their identity have evolved through times, in order to understand them and their status in modern society. In part III, we analysed the content and production background of the 4 target documentary films, and created the types and characteristics of shamans, as portrayed in the documentary films. In part IV, based on the above argument, we studied the impact the documentaries have had on society. As one result for our analysis, we can assert that these independent documentary films have contributed to increase our understanding about shamans. First, each of the movies’ view and interpretation of the role and meaning of shamans are diverse. They point out the various images that shamans are assimilated to, from mediators, ordinary people, gods’ experts, to great shamans, performers, state sorceresses, etc., and picture them in great detail. Second, through each movie, we can confirm that the status of shamans in society underwent a positive change: Performances of exorcism, public activities by shamans, diverse outside activities, etc. Through various activities, shamans have enhanced their social role. Third, we can ascertain the close relation between shamans and the Korean society. In Korean society, shamans exist largely in terms of time and space. Along with this, keeping in mind the currently spreading social anxiety of the present generation and its effort to grasp the nation’s identity, it seems that the role and importance of shamans will increase even more in the future. An overall examination of this content confirms the existence of a diverse spectrum regarding the Korean society’s understanding of shamans, which can neither be explained with dichotomy nor simply by a change of perception - from negative to positive - of shamanism.;이 연구는 독립 다큐멘터리 영화를 통해 재현되는 무당의 모습을 분석하고 그것의 사회적 함의를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 무교와 한국 문화의 깊은 상관관계 및 시각 이미지의 활용을 중시하는 현대 사회의 특성을 종합적으로 고려하였을 때, 다양한 미디어를 통해 재현되는 무당의 모습은 중요한 연구 대상이다. 그러나 오락 목적의 미디어 대다수는 무당을 ‘미신’ 또는 ‘전통 예술’ 등의 대립적인 범주 안에서 편파적으로 인식함으로써 무당에 대한 대중들의 오해와 편견을 조장하는 경향이 있다. 본고는 이와 같은 문제제기에서 출발하여 객관성을 지향하는 영상매체인 다큐멘터리에 주목하였다. 무당을 중심 주제로 하는 독립 다큐멘터리 영화 4편에 재현된 실제 무당들의 다양한 면모를 살펴보고, 이를 통해 드러나는 무당에 대한 한국 사회의 인식을 다각도로 고찰하였다. 구체적인 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 먼저, Ⅱ장에서는 현대 사회의 무당을 이해하기 위하여 한국 현대사 속에서 무당에 대한 인식 및 무당의 정체성이 변화하는 배경과 맥락을 살펴보았다. Ⅲ장에서는 무당을 중심 소재로 하는 독립 다큐멘터리 영화 4편의 제작 배경과 내용을 분석함으로써 영화에서 재현되는 무당의 유형 및 특성을 밝혔다. Ⅳ장에서는 앞의 논의를 토대로 무당 소재 다큐멘터리 영화의 사회적 함의를 고찰하였다. 분석 결과, 무당을 중심 소재로 한 독립 다큐멘터리 영화들은 다음과 같은 점에서 현대 사회의 무당에 대한 이해를 높이는 데 기여하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 각 영화는 무당의 역할과 의미에 대한 다양한 이해와 해석을 환기한다. 영화들은 해원의 매개자, 평범한 사람, 신의 전문가, 위대한 샤먼, 공연예술가, 나라 만신 등 무당들이 가지고 있는 다양한 면모에 주목하고 이를 세밀하게 영상화하였다. 둘째, 각 영화를 통하여 긍정적으로 변모한 무당의 위상을 확인할 수 있다. 굿 공연의 연행, 공개적인 무업 활동, 다양한 대외 활동 등 무당들의 여러 활동 양상을 통하여 무당의 사회적 역할이 증대되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 셋째, 한국사회와 무당의 긴밀한 상관관계를 확인할 수 있다. 한국 사회에서 무당은 시공간적으로 광범위하게 존재한다. 더불어 현대 자본주의 시대의 사회 불안과 국가 정체성 모색의 노력이 현재진행형으로 전개되고 있는 한국적 상황을 염두에 둘 때, 무당의 역할과 중요성은 앞으로 더욱 증대될 것으로 보인다. 이러한 내용을 종합적으로 고찰해 볼 때, 한국사회에서 무당에 대한 이해는 이분법적으로 설명되거나 단순히 부정적인 것에서 긍정적인 것으로 변화하였다는 식으로 설명될 수 없는 다양한 스펙트럼이 존재한다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구는 현재에 초점을 맞추어 미디어, 무당, 사회 간의 상관관계를 고찰 하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 본 연구를 통하여 무당에 대한 탈 역사적 접근 방식이나 현대사회의 다양한 무당의 모습을 ‘새로운’ 또는 ‘변형’ 등의 착종되고 모호한 상태로 범주화 하는 논의에 비판적 문제제기가 가능할 것으로 기대된다.
