프랭크 게리 작품의 조형성을 응용한 텍스타일 디자인 연구

Abstract

21세기의 급변하는 현대 사회에서 예술적 가치를 기반으로 실용성을 추구하는 예술은 장르에 상관없이 서로 다양한 분야와 공존하며 상호 보완적인 관계를 갖는다. 예술과 디자인 그리고 철학은 경계가 모호해 지면서 공통적으로 미적 가치를 창출하기 위하여 서로 공존하고 있다. 텍스타일 디자인에서도 현대인의 아름다움에 대한 욕구를 충족 시켜주기 위한 방법으로 다양한 예술 분야와의 소통이 시도되고 있다. 독특한 구조와 왜곡된 형태, 다양한 재료의 결합을 시도하는 건축가 프랭크 게리는 건축 및 디자인 분야를 자유롭게 넘나들며 기존의 틀에서 벗어난 자율성을 추구하고 있다. 프랭크 게리는 건축과 예술 그리고 해체주의 건축 철학 이념의 접목을 시도하며 빠르게 변화하는 현대사회에서 요구하는 심미성과 실용성, 그리고 예술적 가치를 실현시켜 나가는데 누구보다도 앞장서 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구자는 프랭크 게리가 건축 작업을 통해서 실현해 나가려고 했던 장르간의 소통과 연계성을 텍스타일 디자인으로도 응용이 가능 하다고 사료했다. 본 연구는 건축가 프랭크 게리의 건축 프로젝트 작품의 형태, 재료, 색상에서 보여 지는 조형적인 특성을 응용해서 텍스타일 디자인의 모티프를 개발하고 패턴화할 뿐만 아니라 다양한 소재와의 병합과 함께 홈 퍼니싱(Home Furnishing) 용도로 사용 가능한 아트워크(Artwork) 제작을 통해서 건축과 예술 그리고 텍스타일 디자인을 연결하는 새로운 방향성을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 본 논문은 프랭크 게리 작품의 조형성을 응용한 텍스타일 디자인 작품을 제시하기 위해서 다음과 같이 전개했다. 첫째, 본 연구의 목적을 밝히고 프랭크 게리의 건축 프로젝트를 연구의 범위로 선정했다. 둘째, 프랭크 게리의 건축 프로젝트를 분석하고 그에 내재된 건축 철학과 작업 표현 방식을 고찰했다. 셋째, 위의 이론 연구를 통한 프랭크 게리 작품의 조형성을 바탕으로 ‘파편화(해체)’, ‘유기적 구조(움직임)’, ‘왜곡(변형)’을 키워드로 정해서 텍스타일 모티프를 개발하고 이를 토대로 디자인을 3그룹으로 나눠서 진행했다. 넷째, 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅 작업과 콜라주 작업을 통해서 아트워크 9점을 제작했다. 본 연구와 작품제작을 통해서 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프랭크 게리는 작품에서 형태를 파편화하고 유기적인 곡선을 이용했으며 스케일의 과장과 왜곡을 표현했다. 둘째, 프랭크 게리의 작업 방식은 이질적인 재료의 병치와 금속의 사용, 그리고 자연광의 반사를 응용했다. 셋째, 프랭크 게리 작품의 조형적인 특성을 응용한 텍스타일 디자인을 제안함으로서 섬유와 건축의 상호 보완적인 연결을 시도했다. 넷째, 아트워크에서 표현된 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅, 콜라주 기법과 소재의 다양성 추구는 시각적인 흥미를 부여하면서 단조로움에서 벗어 날 수 있었다. 다섯째, 홈 퍼니싱 텍스타일 디자인으로도 사용가능한 예술성과 기능성을 동시에 갖춘 아트워크 제작을 통하여 경쟁력 있는 텍스타일 디자인으로 발전할 수 있는 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다. 위와 같이 본 연구자는 프랭크 게리 작품의 조형성을 응용한 텍스타일 디자인 연구를 수행하였다. 텍스타일 디자인과 건축가 작품의 조형적인 특성을 접목하면서 건축과 예술, 그리고 텍스타일 디자인 분야를 연결하며 소통할 수 있는 하나의 방향성을 제시하였다. 따라서 본 연구를 통하여 다양한 분야와의 상호 작용과 조화 속에서 텍스타일 디자인이 더욱 발전하는 계기가 되기를 바란다.;In the rapidly changing modern society of the 21st century, the art which aims for practicality based on artistic values coexists and has complementary relationship with various fields regardless of the genre. The boundaries between art, design, and philosophy became ambiguous, and now they coexist to create common aesthetic values. The field of textile design is also trying to communicate with a variety of other fields of art as a way to satisfy modern people desire for beauty. Frank Gehry, the architect known for eccentric structure, distorted forms, and use of various materials, aims for autonomy outside the existing framework while crossing the boundaries between architecture and design freely. Frank Gehry is ahead of everyone else in realizing the aesthetics, practicality, and artistic value desired by the rapidly changing modern society while combining architecture, art, and the architectural philosophy of de-constructivism. For this, I assumed that it would be possible to apply the communication and connectivity between genres that Frank Gehry intends to realize through architectural works to the textile design. The purpose of this study is to develop and patternize textile design motifs by using the formative characteristics show in the forms, materials, and colors of Frank Gehry’s architectural projects and also produce artworks that can be applied to home furnishing by combining various materials to suggest a new direction for connecting architecture, art, and textile design. This study was carried out as follows to suggest textile designs using the formative characteristics of Frank Gehry’s works. First, the purpose of this study was stated and the scope of study was set to the architectural projects of Frank Gehry. Second, the architectural projects of Frank Gehry were analyzed alongside the architectural philosophy and work styles immanent in them. Third, textile motifs were developed by using ‘fragmentization (dissolution)’, ‘organic structure (movement)’, and ‘distortion (transformation)’ as the keywords based on the formative characteristics of Frank Gehry’s works through the study of said theories, and the designs were developed in 3 groups based on them. Fourth, 9 art works were produced through digital textile printing and collage. The following are the results obtained through this study and the production of works. First, Frank Gehry fragmentized the form, used organic curves, and expressed the exaggeration and distortion of scale in his works. Second, Frank Gehry juxtaposed heterogeneous materials and used metals and the reflection of natural light. Third, this study suggested complementary connection between textile and architecture by suggesting the textile design which used the formative characteristics of Frank Gehry. Fourth, the digital textile printing and collage technique expressed in the artworks as well as the diversity of materials gave visual interest and relieved monotony. Fifth, this study suggested the possibility to develop into a competitive textile design through the production of artworks with artistic value and functionality that can be applied to home furnishing textile design. As summarized above, this study looked into the textile design using the formative characteristics of Frank Gehry’s works and suggested a sense of direction for integrating and communicating architecture, art, and textile design by combining textile design and the formative characteristics of the architect’s works. I hope this study would further the development of textile design through the interaction and balance with various fields.
