Abstract
This paper examines the diverse notions of humanity expressed in the works of Antony Gormley(1950-). From the Classical era to the modern age, human figure sculptures have changed, both in image and meaning, to accommodate social needs of the times. In ancient Greece, for example, these sculptures symbolized the ideal human being; during the Middle Ages, the art form was adopted by Christianity to serve as an icon; even later, during the Renaissance when a human-centered world view emerged, human figure sculptures reflected the growing interest in humanism. Moreover, the modern era witnessed the role of human figures sculptures educating the public and encouraging civic mindedness. Beginning in the late 1960s, the human figure sculpture, as an art form, started to disappear as Modernism stressed both literality of material and self-referentiality. In the midst of this artistic movement, Gormley, who used to process material-analytical works in the late 1970s, shifted his art's direction to focus on human figure sculpture molded using the life-casting method. The fact that he chose casting as his method and human figure as a form of sculpture may seem to infer Gormley's return to pre-Modernist conventions. But Gormley's works clearly depart from traditional human figure sculptures that either replicate the human body or imply certain social narratives. Gormley selected the human figure first as a medium to convey his physical experience, and then to inspire communication by the audience, thereby encapsulating human life and its real-world experiences. As Gormley is widely known for his successful public sculptures, large-scale collaboration work, and public performance, the existing studies of his works are mainly conducted through the lens of public art. Besides, the fact he uses his own body for sculptures has allowed discussions that consider his works autobiographical. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the diverse notions of humanity, and their various aspects, conveyed in Gormley's works. First, Gormley's sculptures embody the notion of humanity wherein the relationship between the subject and the object invites the audience to connect with the form as his or her own body, and then distinguish his or herself in awareness of existence. Specifically, the works in which identical human figure sculptures appear repeatedly or the concrete works entomb human figures provide various perspectives through which the audience can perceive the human figure, and even further, themselves. This relationship of the subject and the object moreover expands to allow the audience to both observe themselves and to become observed by others, such as in Gormley's installation works where the human figure is noticeably absent. Gormely's works also create meaning of the notion of humanity in terms of social relationships in the public space and natural environments; specifically, the sculptures adopt and reflect their locations, mirroring character, circumstance, and historical context. These works represent a given area's society and economy, in addition to drawing forth the human communities sustained in and transformed by the space. The human figure sculptures installed in natural environments additionally reflect human life's diversity as a result of certain environments. Therefore, Gormley's public sculptures retain greater breadth of meaning than simply standing as public sculptures installed in public sites to draw the public's attention alone. Aspects of the aforementioned social relationship are also demonstrated by Gormely's collaborative works and participant-based performances. The physical activities of producing human figure terracotta figurines, recognizing others through touch, and coordinated volunteer performance can all constitute part of a work's content. Through this, both human relationship and communication's various meanings exhibit a practical, rather than conceptual, quality. Therefore, Gormley's works seek out the meaning of humanity and its process of formation. From the human figure sculptures drawing forth the audience's inner self, to the public sculptures communicating with human groups, to the collaborative works produced by the local community and the open performance by the public, Gormley's works develop upon the broad spectrum previously established in contemporary sculpture. Thus, Gormley's works, expressing the varied notions of humanity in contemporary art while transmitting traditions of the human figure sculptures in the milieu of art history at the same time, are able to expand the possibilities of sculpture.;본 논문은 안토니 곰리(Antony Gormley, 1950-)의 조각 작품에 나타난 인간개념에 대한 연구이다.
