엘리자베스 비숍(Elizabeth Bishop)과 미국의 냉전

Abstract

본 논문은 엘리자베스 비숍(Elizabeth Bishop)의 작품들을 통해 냉전 이념이 지배했던 당시 미국 사회에 대한 비숍의 시각을 고찰하고자 한다. 먼저 서론에 해당하는 첫 번째 장에서는 선행연구를 통해 비숍의 시적 특징에 대해 논의해 본다. 특히 본 논문의 주제와 가장 연관성이 깊은 정치‧사회적 관점에서 보는 연구들에 집중하여 살펴본다. 또한 비숍 시를 분석하는 데 있어 중요한 냉전의 개념에 대한 설명도 서론에서 다루게 된다. 한편 정치적인 이슈에 침묵하고 미국을 떠나 있었던 비숍의 개인적 상황은 물리적으로나 심리적으로나 미국의 외부인, ‘타자’의 입장에 스스로를 위치시키게 되는데, 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 비숍이 모호한 표현 방식으로 읽어내기 어렵게 만든 그녀의 시 속에서 냉전 이념에 대한 비판과 반전의 메시지를 이끌어내고자 한다. 이에 따라 본론에서는 비숍이 미국 본토에 거주하지 않은 경험을 바탕으로 미국의 냉전 사회를 대내외적으로 고찰하고 있다는 점에 착안하여 그녀가 미국 내부에 있었던 시기와 외부에 있었던 시기, 그리고 다시 미국 내부로 돌아온 이후로 나누어 그녀의 작품들을 분석해 보고자 한다. 본 논문의 본론에 해당하는 두 번째 장 A절에서는 미국에 거주하면서 냉전이 본격적으로 시작되기 이전에 감지했던 고정화된 관점과 사고에 대한 비판의식을 1940년대 작품들을 통해 고찰해보고 다양한 관점으로 사물의 새로운 측면을 바라볼 수 있는 그녀만의 통찰력으로 본격적인 냉전의 시작 이후에 사회를 억압적으로 만들었던 봉쇄 문화에 대한 비판적 입장을 작품 속에서 드러내는 양상을 살펴본다. B절에서는 외국에 거주하면서 타국에서 자아에 대한 새로운 인식을 하는 과정을 통해서 미국 내부에서와는 다른 방식으로 미국 냉전 사회를 바라보는 비숍의 작품들을 분석한다. 그리고 C절에서는 브라질에서의 경험을 통해 자신이 미국 내부와 외부 세계 모두에 위치할 수 있음을 깨달은 후 미국으로 돌아온 비숍의 한층 넓고 복잡해진 세계관과 일방의 가치만을 강요하여 균일한 사회를 만들려는 미국의 냉전적 사고방식에 대한 비판적인 시각을 작품 안에서 찾아보게 될 것이다.;The aim of this thesis is to examine the Cold War ideology in Elizabeth Bishop’s poems and to see how Bishop reconciled the political theme of her poems with their aesthetic form. Elizabeth Bishop was widely considered an apolitical poet. But Bishop perceived the perils of containment culture based on binary thinking formed inside American society. Bishop therefore warned of the harmful influences of a dichotomous way of thinking through her poetry. However, Bishop was threatened by McCarthyism because she was a lesbian. During the Cold War, Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee tried to hunt out communists threatening national security. But their activities expanded to left-wing intellectuals, and also to homosexuals. This political background motivated Bishop to leave the United States and move to Brazil. In this foreign place, Brazil, she could reflect upon herself and the United States from another perspective. At this stage, Bishop expressed her new perspective on American society in the Cold War era through her poems. And after returning to America, Bishop could sharply criticize the containment culture in American society from her mature and expanded world view. Prior to examining Bishop’s works closely, this thesis will devote chapter 1 to treating precedent research about to a literature review of Bishop’s poetry, and especially focus on studies with political and social perspectives. This chapter also analyzes the definition of containment culture in American society during the Cold War because the containment culture in America is an important lens to examine Bishop’s poetry in this thesis. And with attention to Bishop’s life in Brazil, chapter 2 is divided into three sections, that is, in the United States, in Brazil, and back in the United States. First of all, chapter 2-A explains that Bishop previously expressed criticism of the monolithic system under the influence of containment policy in the United States. And chapter 2-B suggests that after Bishop took some time in Brazil for self-examination, she reconsidered the American Cold War society outside America. Lastly, chapter 2-C analyzes how Bishop’s return to the United States from Brazil frees her to express her multiple and complicated world view in her works. Through these analyses, this thesis determines that Bishop’s works, previously considered nonpolitical, are closely associated in the political topics of her day, such as the Cold War and containment policy.
