This study investigates whether linguistic experience in English-speaking countries affects the perception and production of adult Korean speakers and whether L1 interference can interrupt the mastery of native-like pronunciation. This study compared articulatory and acoustic differences in English liquids [l] and [r] of Korean speakers who differed in experience in L2 countries. Both perception and production tests were conducted for this thesis. The 30 subjects were all female: 10 native speakers of English, 10 bilinguals who had been in L2 countries for more than five years, and 10 Korean learners of English who had not been to L2 countries. In the perception test, the subjects were divided into a bilingual group and a Korean group. They were recorded producing 16 minimal pairs that contrasted [l] and [r] in four phonetic environments: initial, initial consonant cluster, intervocalic, and final. In addition, word and sentence tests were conducted to determine contextual effects on L2 speech production. One native speaker of English evaluated the English liquids [l] and [r] produced by the two groups. After the pronunciation accuracy of [l] and [r] was calculated, a statistical comparison was performed. The results of the study are as follows. Overall, all subjects showed producing better for dissimilar English [r] than similar English [l]. Second, they had more difficulty producing the initial consonant cluster [l] and the initial and intervocalic [r]. Third, they performed differently between the word and sentence environment. In the word environment, they produced [l] better than [r]. In the sentence environment, they produced [r] better than [l]. Last, the bilingual group performed better than the Korean group in terms of positions and contexts. Thus, it was shown that Korean speakers had trouble producing [l] and [r] in some places because of L1 interference. Extended exposure in L2-speaking countries helped L2 speakers to produce [l] and [r]. The production tests were comprised of English and Korean liquids tests. In the English production test, the subjects were divided into three groups: the native group, the bilingual group, and the Korean group. The subjects were recorded producing five minimal pairs that contrasted [l] and [r] in five phonetic environments: initial, initial consonant cluster (two consecutive consonants), initial consonant cluster (three consecutive consonants), intervocalic, and final. The mean values of F2 and F3 were analyzed and compared statistically according to the five different positions of the three groups. As a result, the mean F3 values of final [l], initial [r], and intervocalic [r] were significant among the three groups. The results of a post-hoc test suggested that the native group and the Korean group were distinct, but that the bilingual group overlapped between the two groups. The Korean production test was conducted to determine whether L1 had an influence on L2 production. The same bilingual and Korean groups were recorded producing six Korean words including [ㄹ] in the three different phonetic environments: initial, intervocalic, and final. As a result, the mean F3 value of final [l] was significant between the two groups. The results of the two production tests indicate that it is difficult for Korean speakers to master English [l] and [r] in some syllable positions because L1 and L2 language systems are engaged in one phonological space and do not establish distinct phonetic categories. Therefore, L1 and L2 sounds that are perceptually linked come to resemble one another in production (Flege, 1995). This study shows the importance of the linguistic experience in L2 perception and production. The performance of L2 learners can improve if they receive an extended amount of native speaker input. However, L1 interference has a negative influence on L2 production, and it appears that L2 learners have difficulty in mastering certain L2 sounds in some phonetic environments.-
