Impact of Environmental Degradation through Oil Spillage in the Niger Delta with a Focus on Gender Aspects

Abstract

The thesis seeks to understand the environmental effects of oil extraction and petro-business in the Delta region of Nigeria on men and women. Changes in environment due to development of resource extraction industries, oil exploration and production have led to various social and economic problems. Since environmental changes affect men and women differently the thesis argues that the oil spillage has more negative impact on women in the region which contributes to their poverty and thus adversely affects development. The thesis reviews the stringent effect of oil spillage on women through their income generating activities and also highlights the social and economic impacts. The study found that poverty which was on the increase among the women is due to low agricultural productivity, malnourishment, health hazards, gender indifference of palliative programs and alienation from farm lands which exclude them from benefiting from various stages of compensation attached to farm land owners. Some of the social impacts which include conflicts and inadequate health facility have deprived the Niger Delta area of development and has also led to the prevalence of maternal and infant mortality. Proper implementation of environmental laws and gender consciousness will set standard for oil spill cleanup and minimize the effect on women. Keywords: Environmental Degradation, Oil Pollution, Income Generating Activities,;이 논문은 나이지리아 삼각주 지역의 기름 추출과 석유산업이 남성과 여성에게 미치는 환경적 영향에 대해 고찰할 것이다. 석유 탐사와 생산과 같은, 자원 개발 산업의 발달로 말미암은 환경의 변화는 다양한 사회적 경제적 문제들을 야기시켜 왔다. 특히, 이러한 환경적 변화들이 남성과 여성에게 다르게 영향을 미쳤기 때문에, 본고는 기름 유출이 특히 이 지역 여성들에게 더 부정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 이로 말미암아 그들의 빈곤과 개발에 역시 역효과를 야기했음을 주장할 것이다. 따라서 이 논문은 기름 유출의 여파가 여성들에게 있어 그들의 수익 발생 활동을 통해 더 엄중한 영향을 미쳤음을 검토할 것이고, 그것의 사회적 경제적 영향력을 강조할 것이다. 이 연구는 특히 여성들에게 증가해온 빈곤이 농업의 낮은 생산력, 기아, 건강의 위험, 완화 프로그램의 성별 무관심, 그리고 농장 소유주에게 귀착되어 있는 농장으로부터 얻을 수 있는 다양한 단계의 보상으로부터의 소외로 인한 것임을 살펴볼 것이다. 특히, 사회적 갈등이나 부적절한 건강시설 등을 포함한 몇몇의 사회적 영향들이 니제르 삼각주 지역의 개발을 저해해 왔으며, 이것이 유아와 산모 사망률 증가의 결정적 원인이 되었음을 고찰 할 것이다. 이에 따라 본 논문은 환경법의 적절한 실행과 성별의식이 기름 유출 수습의 기준이 됨과 동시에, 여성에게 미치는 역효과를 최소화 하는 길임을 주장할 것이다.
