Abstract

20세기 미국의 대표적인 작곡가로 꼽히는 아론 코플랜드(Aaron Copland, 1900-1990)는 20세기 미국 음악을 발전시키는 데 큰 기여를 하였다. 그는 다양한 작곡기법으로 발레음악, 영화음악, 관현악곡, 성악이나 합창곡 등의 여러 장르의 음악을 작곡하였으며 청중과의 음악적 소통을 위해서도 많은 노력을 하였다. 코플랜드의 작곡기법으로 많이 등장하는 7도와 9도의 각진 음정도약, 복리듬, 낭송조의 기법 등은 찰스 아이브즈(Charles Ives, 1874-1954)에게 영향을 받은 음악양식이며, 그 외에도 스트라빈스키(Igor Stravinsky, 1882-1971), 라벨(Maurice Ravel, 1875-1937) 등의 음악에서도 영향을 받았고 베베른(Anton Webwrn, 1883-1945), 바르톡(Bela Bartok, 1881-1945), 힌데미트(Paul Hindemith, 1895-1963)의 유럽 작곡가들과도 교류함으로써 그의 음악에는 미국의 음악에 유럽의 색채도 가미되어있다. 코플랜드는 피아노 독주곡이나 관현악을 위한 기악곡 위주의 곡을 많이 썼고, 성악곡 중에서도 예술가곡은 아주 소량의 곡들만 작곡하였다. 그 중, 본 논문에서 연구하고자 하는 그의 유일한 연가곡인 『Twelve Poems of Emily Dckinson』 <에밀리 디킨슨 시에 의한 12개의 가곡>은 코플랜드만의 독창성이 엿보이며 재즈적 요소와 블루스 리듬을 사용하여 미국적 색채를 강조하였다. 코플랜드는 19세기 여류시인인 에밀리 디킨슨(Emily Dickinson, 1830-1886)의 12개의 시에 곡을 붙였는데 디킨슨의 내면적인 삶과 평생 동안의 은둔생활을 대변하 듯 난해하고 철학적이며 함축적인 시어를 자주 사용한 그녀의 시를 그만의 표현양식을 사용하여 시적의미를 더욱 음악적으로 표현하였다. 12개의 시들은 일정한 형태의 틀 속에 갇혀져 있는 closed form으로 구성되며 코플랜드 또한 신고전주의의 영향을 받은 뚜렷한 형식을 사용하여 시와 음악의 자연스러운 연결을 고려하여 작곡했음을 알 수 있다. 12개의 곡들은 하나의 스토리로 연결되지 않으며 각각의 노래들은 독립적이고 따로 연주되어 지기도 한다. 그러나 눈에 확연히 드러나지 않을 뿐 각각의 노래 사이에는 형식이나 리듬 패턴, 주제적 연결 등의 유사성을 보인다. ‘자연’이라는 큰 타이틀 안에 세부적으로 삶과 죽음, 천국, 영원 등 디킨슨의 청교도 주의적 주제를 다루고 있으며 피아노 반주부분에 있어서는 가사그리기 기법(word painting)을 더욱 명확히 하여 자연풍경, 장례식. 대성당, 천국 등의 시적 배경과 바람소리나 노크소리와 같은 이미지를 더욱 부각시켜 묘사하였다. 이 연가곡은 뚜렷한 형식과 구조, 대위법적인 진행, 명확한 동기의 모방과 변형 등의 신고전주의 양식과 재즈 리듬 같은 미국적 색채가 혼합된 코플랜드의 대표적인 작품 중 하나이다. 본 논문에서는 코플랜드와 디킨슨의 생애를 다루며 그들의 삶 속에서 시와 음악이 어떤 영향을 받았는지에 대해 알아보고 디킨슨이 표현하고자 했던 시어의 함축적 의미를 코플랜드는 음악적으로 어떻게 표현해 냈는지에 관한 시와 음악 간의 상호성, 성악과 반주의 호흡과 발란스(balance)에 대하여 연구하고자 한다.;American composer Aaron Copland(1900-1990) is, regarded as representative of the 20th century American music, the 20th century have had a greatly contributed to improving. With diverse composing skills, Copland composed various genres of music, ranging from ballet music, movie music, orchestral music, to vocal music or choral songs. He put in much effort to establish musical communication with the audience. Copland’s composing skill is found in intervals with 7th chord and 9th chord, polyrhythmic, reciting note and others. This was influenced by Charles Ives(1874-1954) and besides Ives, Igor Stravinsky(1882-1971) and Maurice Ravel(1875-1937) also affected Copland’s music form. European composers like Anton Webwrn(1883-1945), Bela Bartok(1881-1945), and Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) added a European color to the American music. Copland mainly composed instrumental music such as pieces for piano solos or orchestras and less vocal music, especially art songs. Among these, this paper will be focusing on his one and only song cycle “Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson” which displays Copland’s originality. The song cycle includes jazz elements such as applies the blues rhythm to underscore the American color within the piece. Copland set twelve of Emily Dickinson’s poem to music. Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is one of America’s representing female poets of the 19th century and these poems are philosophical and difficult, including connotative poetic diction, as they reflect her inner side and her secluded life, which continued throughout her entire lifetime. Copland tried to use his own form of expression to deliver the poetic meaning in music.
