20세기 후반 무용에 나타난 아름다운 남성이미지 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기 후반 양성적 성의 남성무용수의 이미지를 분석함으로써 새롭게 변화된 ‘아름다운 남성이미지’를 밝히는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 오늘날 남성은 기존의 남성이미지에서 벗어나 다양성을 추구하며 성적, 미적 대상으로 존재한다. 변화하는 사회 속에서 남성의 이미지는 시각화된 심상을 바탕으로 신체와 외모에 따라 다른 모습으로 나타나며 미를 추구하는 아름다운 남성이미지로 나타난다. 이를 위해 20세기 후반 남성무용수를 대상으로 하여 남성이미지를 분석하여 아름다운 남성성의 특성을 고찰함으로써 확대된 남성이미지를 파악하고자 하였다. 그리고 남성무용수의 이미지가 현대의 남성이미지에서 재현되고 있다는 것을 전제로 논의를 전개하였다. 본 논문의 연구 방법은 미적, 성적 개념의 변화에 따른 남성 섹슈얼리티를 토대로 작품 속 남성무용수의 신체와 외모, 성적 취향과 그에 따른 움직임을 분석함으로써 남성이미지를 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 먼저 남성의 아름다움을 주장한 동성애적 취향의 시각을 지닌 20세기 후반의 남성무용수 조르주 돈, 마크 모리스, 매튜 본의 작품을 중심으로 남성의 이미지를 분석하였다. 조르주 돈의 작품 「볼레로」에서 남성무용수는 신체를 부각시키며 관능적이고 에로스적 이미지를 표현했다. 그리고 마크 모리스의 작품 「디도와 아이네이스」에서는 남성의 몸에 여성이미지를 입힘으로써 여성성을 극대화하여 성의 경계를 허무는 양성적 이미지를 표현하였다. 마지막으로 매튜 본의 작품 「백조의 호수」에서는 변형된 백조를 통해 남성성이 확장된 모습으로 나타난다. 이에 남성의 이미지가 구체적으로 표현되고 있는 남성무용수들의 작품을 중심으로 하여 20세기 후반 남성무용수의 이미지의 특성을 규명하였다. 남성무용수의 이미지는 부각된 신체의 섹슈얼리티, 혼재된 신체의 섹슈얼리티, 확장된 신체의 섹슈얼리티의 특징으로 나타났다. 이들은 여성이미지를 차용함으로써 성의 이분법적 구조에서 벗어나 전환되고 공유된 모습을 보인다. 또한 보여지는 객체로써 미의 주체적 모습으로 남성 섹슈얼리티를 강조한다. 남성무용수에게서 나타난 이러한 특징은 현대사회의 남성에게서 신체를 노출시키고, 여성화된 남성이미지로 나타난다. 이 과정에서 남성의 이미지는 시간의 흐름에 따라 다양성을 보이며, 남성 섹슈얼리티는 그 사회가 요구하는 모습에 부합되어 나타나고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그러므로 본 연구는 사회문화 속에서 변화된 남성성과 20세기 후반의 무용예술에서 표현된 남성무용수의 이미지가 가지는 연관성을 찾을 수 있었다. 또한 역사적으로 남성성이 지닌 의미와 상징, 그리고 미에 대한 본질과 가치의 중요성을 인식할 수 있다. 이 연구를 통해 오늘날 무용작품에서 남성의 이미지는 어떠한 방식으로 남성성을 강조하며 아름다움을 발현시키고 있는지 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바란다.;This study aims to seek the newly changed ‘beautiful male image' by analyzing the image of male dancers of bisexuality from the late 20th century. Today, image of male strays from conventional image and seeks diversity and exists as object of sexuality and aesthetic. Male image in this changing society depicts male as aesthetic showing differently based on body and looks, in accordance with visualized imagery. Consequently, this study analyzes the male image of male dancers in the late 20th century to find out the expanded male image by studying characteristics of beautiful masculinity. Moreover, this study prerequisites the fact that image of male dancers are reproduced in that of modern men. The method of study is to contemplate the male image by analyzing male dancer's body and looks and sexual preference in dance art, subsequently the movement based on male sexuality that has altered the concept of aesthetic and sex. To begin with, this study analyzes male image based on dance works of male dancer Jorge Donn, Mark Morris, Matthew Bourne, of the late 20th century, whose point of view was homosexual preference emphasizing male beauty. In 「Bolero」, a dance work by Jorge Donn, the body of male dancers was highlighted expressing the sensual and erotic images. Moreover, in「Dido and Aeneas」, a dance work by Mark Morris, a bisexual image was illustrated, which collapsed the boundary of sex, through intensifying the femininity by laying female image onto a male body. Lastly, in 「Swan Lake」, a dance work by Matthew Bourne, an extended masculinity was introduced through modified swan. Consequently, the study identifies the characteristics of male dancers of the late 20th century in accordance with dance works of male dancer where male image was expressed in detail. The image of male dancer can be characterized in magnified body sexuality, consolidated body sexuality, extended body sexuality. These feminine images are borrowed in order to escape binary structure to show transformed and shared appearance. Moreover, masculine sexuality is stressed by subjective image of beauty which is shown as object. Such characteristics, result to exposing male body and feminizing male image in modern society. Male image shows diversity through time in the process and male sexuality meets the image which the society demands. Accordingly, this study found the correlation between the changed masculinity in mist of sociocultural and male dancer image expressed in art of dance of the late 20th century. Furthermore, the importance of historical meaning and symbolic representation of masculinity and nature and value of beauty was perceived. I hope this study provides an opportunity to consider how today's male image in dance works is emphasized and how the beauty is revealed.
