Abstract
Cesar Franck was one of the most important figures of the late Romantic period. He developed a distinguished French style in his instrumental music. Besides composing instrumental music, Franck was an organist and pedagogue. He also showed his expertness in religious (sacred) music. Franck created his own unique style by combining the traditional German Classical music with the Romantic French music. Such great accomplishments helped Franck to construct his own tonal vocabulary. Franck’s compositional style was strongly influenced by his background as an organist which directed him to write contrapuntal melodic lines, fast changing melodies, rhythmic augmentation or diminution and “Cyclic Form” originally created by Ludwig van Beethoven. Above characteristics are significantly present in his Violin Sonata in A Major. This masterpiece is written in four movements with the third movement being a slow movement which disobeys the traditional four-movement sonata form (Fast-Slow-Dance/Scherzo-Fast). Franck used cyclic form in every movement of this sonata. Especially in each movement, it contains three different motives which systemically circulate through repetition, combination and transformation in unity. Franck refused to use the traditional fifth relationship but instead used third relationship which depicts strong characteristics of colorful harmonies and drastic chordal changes of the Romantic period. Instead of joining the crowd of trendy French music of his era, Franck created his own refined way in order to seamlessly connect the bridge between his predecessors (from Bach to Beethoven) and contemporaries (Liszt and Wagner). Franck’s philosophy of simplicity in music making was not acknowledged during his lifetime, but it resulted as a basic structure of modern French music.
