Abstract
The modern society is becoming one where the notion of life that claims “happiness through consumption” is prevalent and “consumption is a virtue”. In today’s society, ‘what one possesses’ defines one’s happiness. Individuals are evaluated not by what they have achieved through the course of life but by what they consume. At such point in time, the most important value is money, and those in great possession of money enjoy economic affluence. This study begins by raising the question of ‘the affluent class, what does their consumer culture look like?’ By analyzing the consumer culture of the affluent class, this dissertation seeks to examine the following. First, this study aims at shining new light on the semantic structure of the consumer culture of the rich, which so far has been veiled, through in-depth interviews with individuals who are not bound by constraints in their spending and are enjoying economic and material affluence. Second, this research bears significance as a methodological attempt that analyzes the consumer culture extensively through the network analysis method for semantic structure and approaches the consumer culture of the affluent from a qualitative research method. Third, this study provides an educative foundation in setting a better consumer culture and to better understand the affluent by studying their consumer culture and its meaning. Based on the above, this study sets out to first assess the characteristics of the consumer culture of the rich. Hofsted’s four manifestations of culture (symbols, heroes, rituals, and values) are employed as a detailed framework in reviewing the consumer culture comprehensively. Second, based on the findings above, this paper derives the themes and analyzes the semantic structure among the themes accordingly. The detailed research method adopted is as follows. As the study participants, the wealthy consumers, are very limited in number and are difficult to engage, in-depth interview has been conducted, as it is a suitable method when the research involves a limited number of study participants. The study participants are female consumers with strong purchasing power, who belong to the super rich class, with long-term VIP membership of department stores. Five study participants have been selected according to the above-mentioned criteria, with whom qualitative interviews have been conducted to explore the consumer culture of the rich. The traits of consumer culture were then grouped per clusters of themes-themes and themes, from which the semantic structure analysis through network analysis was conducted. The characteristics of the consumer culture of the rich and their semantic structure were drawn, according to the themes derived from the above process. The findings of this study are the following. The four characteristics of consumer culture of the affluent were analyzed by 8 sub-themes and 18 thematic keywords. The first characteristic, the symbol of consumption, appeared in the sub-themes of conspicuous consumption, self-distinction, and the building of self-identity. Second, beauty turned out to be the consumption hero of the consumer culture of the affluent, or the goal that the participants sought to attain through consumption. Third, the consumer consciousness of the target class was analyzed to be the pursuit of convenience and higher quality of basic necessities (food, clothing, and shelter). Fourth, the value of their consumption comes in the combination of two separate themes: the happiness of their children and their pursuit of happiness. The hierarchical equivalence of the characteristics that appear in this consumer culture was examined through network analysis. As a result, the characteristics of their consumer culture may be summarized as the ‘distinction amongst ourselves through satisfaction fulfilled by external high-end consumption’. The proposals that may be drawn from this study are as follows. First, the ‘external high-end consumption’ clearly exemplifies the characteristics of the excessive consumer culture that emphasizes how one is perceived by others. This shows how developing true ‘self-identity’ is what is most needed in consumer education today, and finding one’s true ‘self’ will serve as a foundation upon which a healthy consumer culture will eventually be formed. Second, ‘satisfaction’ is not something one can attain through consumption and thus even the economically affluent consumers may have a void that cannot be filled. This outlines the need for an education that would set values for a healthy consumption that will allow consumers to break away from their materialistic point of view. Third is the interest in ‘amongst ourselves’, the affluent consumers. This calls for a consideration on the potential that the affluent class holds in exerting great social influence through building a culture of true sharing and giving, rather than remaining a mere marketing target. Lastly, the results of this study affirm the need for a specific consumer hero who sets the direction toward which the consumer culture of Korea’s affluent class is headed. There will be a need for the awareness to be raised, enabling Korea’s affluent class to become a true upper class, in other words, to turn them into actors that form a mature consumer culture in which they would revert their economic wealth to the society based on their social standing and influence. Due to the limited number of study participants, trying to generalize the findings of this paper may be difficult. Furthermore, a follow-up study whose participants are further classified, such as youths or elderly, may be needed.
