Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful explosions in the uni-verse, and extremely interesting phenomena in astrophysics. They are highly luminous events and visible to high redshift; thus, they provide valuable insight into the distant universe. GRB research has advanced vigorously over the past 30 years, with a growing body of results from space and ground. As a prime exam-ple, the Swift space observatory has provided a variety of multi-wavelength in-formation on GRBs, including UV/optical light curves. However, major limita-tions in observation lay in slow response time in temporal (i.e., light curve) measurements. In this respect, our group proposed the Ultra-Fast Flash Observa-tory (UFFO) project with the primary aim of detection of early UV/optical/NIR emissions from GRBs. The UFFO introduces a new telescope of its kind, the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT), which has a response of a couple of seconds, the fastest ever in UV/optical detection, and an X-ray telescope based on the coded mask technique. As a first step, the UFFO collaboration has built the payload of UFFO-pathfinder which will be flown to space in 2014 aboard the Lomonosov space-craft. It consists of the UFFO Burst Alert X-ray Trigger telescope (UBAT) for de-tection of X-rays with a wide-field of view, the SMT for observation of UV/optical by means of a motorized slewing mirror, and the UFFO Data Acqui-sition system (UDAQ) which controls the UBAT and SMT and communicates with the satellite. The key concept of the SMT in UFFO-pathfinder is the rotation of the mirror, rather than the slew of the entire spacecraft, to redirect the optical path. Motivated by this new idea, and the challenge involved in the realization of the idea, I have developed the readout hardware of the SMT, including Intensi-fied CCD (ICCD), the control of slewing motor, and the power distribution to the UFFO-pathfinder. Each element was developed considering the fast readout along the requirement of SMT, and to fit the constraints of space missions, such as low power consumption, standalone control, and low outgassing. This thesis is focused on describing: the development of ICCD readout; slewing mirror control in SMT; and the fast readout and control in electronics to meet the requirement of the fast response UFFO-pathfinder for detection of GRBs (e.g., by employing the Field Programmable Gates Arrays (FPGAs) instead of microprocessors). I also have performed a variety of space qualification tests of the instrument, including shock/vibration and thermal/vacuum.
