Trade Potential in China-EU FTA

Abstract

중국과 유럽 연맹(EU)은 세계 경제와 무역에 중요한 영향을 미친다. 이 지역의 무역은 세계 무역의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이 두 지역은 경제 발전과 국제 협력의 목표로 인해 각각의 무역 상대국과 자유 무역 협정 달성을 추구하고 있다. 이 두 지역은 그 자체로 중요한 무역 상대국이다. 기존의 무역 규모도 컸으나 향후에도 계속 커질 전망이다. 본 연구는 무역 잠재력 측정을 통해 중국과 유럽연맹(EU)의 자유 무역협정의 의미를 새기고자 한다. 우선 이론적인 설명과 경제 데이터를 산출하고, 중국과 유럽연맹(EU)의 자유 무역 협정을 분석하고자 한다. 본 연구에 사용한 자료는 중국의 140개 무역 상대국의 15년간의 패널데이터이다. 실증분석 결과에 따르면 중국의 무역 패턴은 중력모형에서 예측되는 일반적인 결과와 다르지 않다. 또한 이 결과들을 이용하여 중국과 유럽 연맹(EU)의 무역 잠재력을 예측하고자 한다. 두 지역 간 무역 잠재력이 존재하는 것은 사실이다. 따라서 중국과 유럽연맹(EU)의 자유 무역 협정이 이루어 진다면 두 지역 간 무역 규모와 각국의 재정은 늘어날 것이다.;China and the EU are the two major players on the stage of global economy and international trade. Both of them take a great proportion of the world’s economic growth and trade flows. Focusing on economic development and integrating with the world’s economic network, the two economies are both attempting to format free trade areas with their trade partners. The two economies per se are important cooperating partners according to their economic size and trade structure. Trade flows between them are huge, keeping growth over decades and also expected to be increased in the future. This research concentrates on exploring the significance of China-EU FTA by examining the trade potential under it. Theoretical explanation and empirical data will support the formation of China-EU FTA qualitatively and quantitatively. To find out the trade potential of the two sides under the proposed FTA, examining China’s trade pattern by using gravity model with panel data from 140 countries for 15 years (1998-2012) will be the first step in the quantitative stage. It is found in this stage that gravity model can successfully explains the trade pattern of China. In the second quantitative stage, estimators obtained from the gravity model predict that China and the EU have trade potential and should format a FTA for increasing bilateral trade and country wealth.
