The media conversion phenomena are recreating the same narrative on multiple forms of media. Fantasy novels serve as an original source in the media conversion. Many studies have been conducted on examining the narrative characteristics of the fantasy novels as the origin, but they are limited. These studies compare the narratives focusing on how the original sources are reflected and how they are altered. Apart from adaptation study which concentrates on the difference between two media, it is hard to understand the process of media conversion when the study about contents which are converted to multimedia focuses on how does transformation occur. Although converted contents derive from the original, they are not simple derivative work. They are not additional contents but secondary contents. The subject of this research is Harry Potter, the representative fantasy novel of media conversion. Harry Potter expands its narrative across media and original, and this expansion is called Harry Potter Series. The key for media conversion phenomena study is to find transmutability and identity. Transmutability means the narrative elements which continue to transfer via media. Identity means what makes these contents belong to a series after various media conversion. To study contents which are converted to multimedia, it is needed to focus on what are the characteristics of original narrative and types of conversion. The purpose of the study is to investigate the process of how fantasy novels as original narrative are converted to multimedia platforms. This study examines the characteristic of the original narrative, media conversion types, and then the process of conversion. From this point of view, this research analyzes Harry Potter as the representative fantasy novel of media conversion. In chapter 1 and 2, it shows how does Harry Potter begin to transform with network from cross media to transmedia, and what is the narrative space, after examining the existing studies on multimedia convergence by type. Based on narrative space, readers of the original source become performers, and they understand, recognize, and expand the textual world expressed in every media. The relationship between the original narrative and converted contents is dialogical relationship that is open to interpretation from both sides. This dialogical relationship becomes one network in the process of media conversion. The narrative space is the basis of media conversion network. This study reveals these aspects and it analyzes Harry Potter as an intertextual text to show the characteristic of original source in the relation of the narrative tradition. In Chapter 3, this study analyzes the intertextual characteristic of the genre conventions of fantasy novels and how they are connected to the space. There are dialogical relationship between the original narrative and the genre conventions of fantasy novels, and these conventions are mediated through fictional space of the fantasy novels. It is expected that the process of identity and transmutability would be revealed by examining the spaces that mediate original narratives and the various types of spaces in media conversion. The characteristic of narrative structure in fantasy novels is revealed in the construction of fantasy spaces and the quest narratives. The fictional space of fantasy novels becomes the driving force of narrative progress when the characteristic of this genre is defined as Portal-Quest, since it premises the spatial movement of characters as the hero’s journey. It applies the theory of Possible Worlds by Marie-Laure Ryan to classify the space of fantasy novels. In Possible Worlds theory, readers in the Actual World infer the Referential World by reading the Textual Actual World in fantasy novels. Through genre and accessibility relations, and typology of mimetic discourse, it shows the difference between narrative fictional worlds and the Actual World. By the principle of minimal departure to Alternative Possible World in Textual Alternative Possible World, it classifies the fantasy novels by the types of spatial movements. In chapter 4, it analyzes narrative functions and the stages of a hero's journey by Vladimir Propp. There are three types of fantasy novels focusing on the spatial movement. First, the romance spatial movement type begins journey in a normal space of an Alternative Possible World and returns: for example, the Lord of the Rings. This type appears in medieval romance. Second, the rite of passage spatial movement makes readers move to the Alternative Possible World by passing through a boundary space from a normal space of the everyday world and by returning: for example, the Chronicles of Narnia. Third, continuously accessible Alternative Possible World is the type of Harry Potter. Because of this possibility of access, the meaning of normal space of the everyday world is changed to the potential space of Alternative Possible World. Persistent accessibility means that the space that was seemed to normal space is the part of Alternative Possible World. When one realizes this fact, the center of Textual Alternative Possible World moves to the fantasy world. It should be called the type of recentering of fantasy. The space of fantasy novels is divided into daily space, fantasy space, and boundary space as the point that cuts and connects these two spaces to each other. In the type of recentering of fantasy, the daily space becomes the potential space, and the fantasy space becomes the implementation space. These three spaces mediate the narratives of Harry Potter. Three spaces have dialogical relationship and intertextuality with narrative space in literary tradition. Scapegoat motif from prophecy tradition appears by mediating metaphorical space as boundary and choice. Taboo motif from gothic novels is mediated as the implementation space. In chapter 5, it analyzes the space of the Harry Potter Series, which is transferred to various media platforms such as games and movies. By researching how the space narrative is received through media conversion, it extracts the spatiality is the core narrative elements of fantasy novels. The aspect of internal perspective space, which is alternative to mediation of linear narrative, is shown in the Harry Potter Series which is converted into various platforms. The readers experience the space as vicarious, behavioral, and existent insideness. Because the users of the converted contents know the original source, vicarious insideness is what they get to know and experience the place. The traces of the linear narrative are spatialized with items and the spatial structures. These are the stage of games. The field, which is important space of stage, corresponds to the mediation of implementation space of Quests. The items and the spatial structures which compose visual shapes and fields get the readers of the text who passively experienced the original work to experience behavioral insideness that they go around the world of Harry Potter as the performers. In web games, users experience the existent insidedness by combining the history of their Actual World with the historical tradition of the Textual Actual World in the Harry Potter Series. The readers create symbolic planning spaces as active performers who accept the network of conversion. Through the paratext that links the Actual World in chronological order, readers make the Actual World as potential space which expands Textual Worlds. The process of inferring and building the Textual Referential World from the Textual World corresponds to the process of making hypertext. By making the Actual World as potential space, there are exclusive aspects of each Textual Worlds. As the performers, the readers create the Textual Referential World based on Textual Actual World of Harry Potter. This study analyzes the space of Harry Potter and the spatial aspects through the Harry Potter Series. It shows the possibility of reinterpretation and recreation in fantasy novels by the process of media conversion through spatiality. Between readers and original source, original source and the literary tradition of the fantasy genre, and the original source and conversion contents, the media conversion forms the network of dialogical relationship based on spatiality. It is meaningful that this study lays groundwork for revealing strategies that is necessary for media conversion, compared to the existing narrative comparative studies, which only deals with the difference of expression from the change of narrative styles, could not clarify. It would be necessary to study the recreation process that shows the aesthetical aspects of media conversion.;동일한 서사를 다양한 매체의 형식으로 재생산하는 것을 매체 전환이라고 한다.
