고등학교 한국사 교과서의 민족 관련 서술의 추이

Abstract

우리는 ‘민족(民族)’이라는 단어를 자주 접하고 사용하고 있으나, 정작 ‘민족’에 대한 정확한 개념을 이해하고 있지 못한다. 통념적인 ‘민족’은 추상적・관념적 성격을 지니고 있으며, 이는 역사교육 본연의 목적보다는 시대 상황이 초래한 정치적 목적에 의해 이용되었다. 이런 상황 속에서 ‘민족’에 대한 개념 정의와 형성 시기에 대한 학계의 연구 성과는 교과서에 충실히 반영되지 못했고, 일부 반영된 부분조차도 잘못된 학설에 의한 개념의 오류와 이데올로기적인 서술을 무비판적으로 답습하는 양상으로 나타났다. 최근에는 이러한 서술조차도 찾아보기 힘들 정도로 민족에 관련된 서술이 대폭 축소되거나 아예 삭제되는 수준에 이르렀다. 현재 우리는 남북통일과 다문화 사회의 통합이라는 시대적 과제를 안고 있으며, 더욱 빠르게 심화되는 세계화의 흐름 속에 있다. 이런 사회 변화와는 달리, 교과서에는 여전히 우리 민족의 우수성과 유구(悠久)함 및 단일민족(單一民族)임을 강조하여 자칫 배타적이고 왜곡된 역사의식을 심어줄 우려가 있다. 최근 개정 교육과정에서는 이러한 서술은 상당 부분 사라졌으나, 오히려 민족에 관련된 서술을 지나치게 소략하여 ‘민족’의 실체에 대한 고민조차 할 수 없게 되어 버렸다. 그리하여 본 연구는 고등학교 한국사 교과서에 반영된 한국 민족 형성에 관련된 서술을 분석하여, 서술의 문제점과 경향성을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 급변하는 현 사회 현상과 괴리감이 큰 역사교육에서의 민족사 교육의 현 주소를 인식하고, 앞으로 이를 개선해야 한다는 과제를 제시하고자 하였다. ;Even though the term "nation" is frequently used, its exact definition is not well understood. The conventional characteristics of the term is abstract and conceptual, and the term has been used for the political purpose resulted in the time context of Korean society, rather than for the educational purpose of history. Given such a situation, the accomplishments of academic research on the concept of the nation and the time of its formation have not been fully reflected in the textbooks, and even the parts that the textbooks included were subject to conceptual errors from incorrect theories and unquestioning acceptance of ideological descriptions. Recently, the amount of descriptions of the nation in the textbooks have been even reduced, almost deleted, to the point that only a few descriptions exist. Korea is currently facing the tasks of the age, reunification of North and South Korea and integration of multi-cultural society, while also standing within the rapidly intensifying globalization. Out of line with such societal changes, the textbooks still emphasize superiority and long history of Koreans and Korea being a single-race nation, which raise concern of injecting closed-minded, distorted historical awareness. Although recently revised education curriculum has eliminated many of such descriptions, it has reduced the descriptions of the nation rather too much, depriving of the chances to contemplating what a true nation is. Therefore, the present study is to understand the problems and the trend of the descriptions about Korean nation, by analyzing the descriptions relevant to the formation of the nation which are addressed in high school Korean history textbooks. By doing this, the study aims to provide awareness of Korea's current education of national history which considerably falls behind the rapidly changing society and to suggest a task of improving it for the future.
