The paper aims to understand transfer history throughout the entire courses of how the East and the West were mutually influenced and developed with the transfer of Chinese porcelain. The propose of the paper is to propose a case study that presents concrete contents of transfer history especially focusing on changes of a specific object with its social implication. Also, the paper shows a new approach for transfer history education as a complementary measure of East-West transfer history as a branch of world history education. As a field of world history study, transfer history mainly deals with 'Interdependence', 'Cultural Diffusion' and 'Inter-recognition' that emerged as a distinct academic field in the 1990s. The term, 'Transfer' is based on sociology and cultural anthropology. It indicates a continuous process of cultural interaction that generates cultural assimilation and acceptance due to a repeated exposure to cultural diversity. It seems clear that transfer history is currently spotlighted in the field of world history study and education for its wide-ranging understanding beyond time and spatial boundaries. On the basis of the concept of ‘Transfer’, it deals with any cultural contact with regions or objects, and its influence with multifarious interests. Transfer history enables researchers to propose a new analytic unit and method to make a comprehensive analysis on world history. Moreover, it is natural to emphasize the historical characteristics of culturally transferred regions through this study which is essential to history education. However, it is still hardly possible for its researchers to study practical and detailed contents than macroscopic analysis due to its interdisciplinary perspective. To overcome this limit, this paper suggests ‘A study on transfer history with a specific object’. This type of study allows the author to explore the distinguishing changes of an object with following its transfer route. Through the process, this paper is able to establish a specific model of transfer history study not to lose practicality. Chinese porcelain is a proper example for comprehensive illustration of an economic and cultural exchange between the East and the West in the world history. It was a worldly renowned luxury commodity which was well-blended with utility and artistry. Moreover, Chinese porcelain itself contains a variety of history of interchanges for its historied trade. Through the long-term cultural interactions, every feature of porcelain including shape, pattern and pigment had been affected with acceptance of technology, materials and culture of different regions. With this fact, the paper highlights the importance of Chinese porcelain as an outcome of East-West interactions. The precedent studies on economic and art history were used to reorganize and reconstruct the meaning of Chinese porcelain in the study on transfer history. The author found the three major changes of Chinese porcelain in its transfer history. First, it was a ‘Blue and White ware’ that appeared through the cultural transfer with Islam. Even though China had the finest skills in ceramic manufacture, they adopted cobalt oxide as a new ceramic material in an active way. The blue and white ware was exported to and highly loved by Islam where the origin of cobalt oxide was. Second, there had been huge demands for Chinese porcelain in Europe since 15th century passing through Islam. This popularity was formed with various elements of socio-economic, cultural and science-technological reasons that Chinese porcelain represented at that period. Moreover, it also led the development of European ceramic manufacture because European artisans attempted to improve their works to compete with Chinese ceramics. Third, China then reflected the infusion of improved European porcelains in reverse which were under the Chinese ceramic techniques before. Chinese porcelain was affected by the influx of European ways of pattern, pigments, colouring, and shape. A new version of Chinese porcelain was flourished in Europe as well as in China, which enabled China to contact with European cultures through its culturally diversified ceramics.;1990년대부터 세계사 연구 분야 중 하나로 등장한 ‘교류사(Transfer History)’는 상호 의존 ․ 문화 전파 ․ 상호간 인지 등을 연구하는 분야이다.
