『빌러비드』에 나타나는 재기억의 의미와 부름과 응답을 통한 흑인치유의 가능성

Abstract

본고의 목표는 『빌러비드』 안에서 재기억이 부름과 응답과 결합하여 나타남으로써 흑인을 치유할 수 있는 힘이 되는 과정을 연구하는데 있다. 재기억은 흑인들에게 있어 과거를 기억한다는 것이 어떠한 의미인지를 표현하기 위하여 모리슨이 『빌러비드』안에서 사용하는 새로운 용어이다. 과거를 기억할 때 당시의 공포와 고통까지도 모두 다시 경험하는 흑인들의 문제를 해결하기 위하여 모리슨은 부름과 응답이라는 서사 형식을 통하여 흑인들이 과거를 기억할 수 있도록 만든다. 재기억을 부름과 응답을 통하여 흑인들이 서로 주고 받음으로써 과거에 흑인이 서로에게 주었던 상처를 치유하고 미래를 계획할 수 있는 단계로 나아갈 수 있게 된다. Ⅰ장에서는 『빌러비드』가 신노예서사로서 흑인 여성 글쓰기의 전통 안에 위치하고 있음을 확인하고, 역사와 기억의 의미를 고찰한다. 미국 역사가 담아내지 못하는 흑인 노예제의 과거가 반기억의 서사로서 어떻게 신노예서사 안에서 구체적으로 형상화되었는지를 살펴본다. 『빌러비드』는 여성 노예 서사의 전통을 이은 신노예서사로서, 마가렛 가너의 영아 살해 사건을 역사라는 제도적 기억이 아니라 흑인들의 내면의 삶을 보여주는 텍스트임을 확인한다. Ⅱ장에서는 텍스트에서 재기억이라는 단어가 직접적으로 언급되는 장면들을 분석하여 재기억이 어떠한 의미를 가지고 있는지, 그리고 어떻게 그 의미가 변화하는지에 대하여 분석한다. 기존의 비평들이 분석한 재기억의 의미를 짚어보고, 재기억을 이해하는 지점이 다양하게 갈라지고 있음을 지적한다. 재기억에 대한 기존 비평이 기억이라는 단어와 혼용되어 사용되거나 역사, 과거와 같은 커다란 주제들과 엮여 피상적으로 다루어진 한계를 지적한다. 재기억이 직접적으로 언급되는 장면들을 분석함으로써 처음에는 공포와 고통을 직면해야 한다는 의미를 함축한 재기억의 의미가 신뢰와 초월의 의미를 가지게 되기까지의 과정을 확인함으로써 재기억이 가지는 파괴적인 힘이 긍정적인 방향으로 전환하게 됨을 알아본다. Ⅲ장에서는 흑인들의 재기억이 부름과 응답이라는 서사 형식을 통하여 가능함을 분석한다. 재기억은 혼자서는 감당할 수 없는 고통을 흑인들에게 주기 때문에 집단적인 말하기가 필요하다. 모리슨은 이 집단적인 말하기를 부름과 응답이라는 흑인의 구어적 전통을 서사 방식으로 사용하면서 구체화한다. 부름과 응답을 통하여 서로의 기억을 의식적으로 끄집어내고 대화하는 과정을 통하여 흑인들은 서로에게 준 상처를 설명하고 상처를 치유할 수 있다. 모리슨은 부름과 응답을 통하여 재기억을 풀어내는 흑인들의 모습을 통하여 미국 사회가 잊고자 하지만 결코 사라지지 않는 노예제의 과거를 정리하고 떠나보내야 함을 시사한다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여 본 논문은 『빌러비드』의 기존 비평이 행하지 않았던 내용과 형식이 결합되는 측면을 재기억과 부름과 응답의 관계를 분석함으로써 알아보고자 한다. 본 논문은 최종적으로 모리슨이 재기억과 부름과 응답을 통하여 와해된 흑인들의 관계가 회복될 수 있다는 가능성을 제시하는 희망적인 텍스트로 이해하고 과거를 분리함으로써 다시 삶을 살아가고자 하는 흑인들의 의지를 확인해 보고자 한다.;The aim of this thesis is to examine the way of combining Call-and-Response and rememory in Beloved, and how Call-and Response narrative style heals wounded African Americans whose ancestors experienced slavery. Rememory is Morrison’s own term in order to express African Americans’ sense of remembering appropriately. For African Americans, remembering the past is accompanied horror and pain. Because of this, African Americans have not spoken about or remembered their slave past. In order to speak this unspeakable past, Morrison uses a Call-and-Response style so that African Americans are able to remember the past. Through a Call-and-Response style, African American people can move to the next step and heal each other’s pain and explain it by sharing their rememories. Chapter I claims that Beloved is located in female African American literary tradition as a neo-slave narrative, and examines the meaning of history and memory. History failed to speak the truth about slavery. Neo-slave narratives try to reconstruct the truth of slavery as a counter-memory, not the social and institutional memory. Beloved, a neo-slave narrative that continues female African American literary tradition, uses Margaret Garner’s infanticide as a counter-memory by fictionalizing this historical event. As a result, Morrison creates the truth of slavery by inventing African Americans’ interior life. Chapter II studies the meaning of rememory and tracks how this meaning is transformed by analyzing specific scenes where rememory is directly quoted in Beloved. Critics have correlated rememory with big issues, for example, past, history, and trauma. Sometimes, they use this term without any difference from memory. Therefore, so far, an understanding of rememory has remained at a superficial level. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the progress of the power of rememory over to a positive meaning by exploring how the meaning of rememory is transformed from confronting the past’s horror and pain to trust, and reconstruction of African American’s relationships. Chapter III analyzes how African-Americans’ rememory can be made possible through a special narrative style, Call-and-Response. Because rememory gives unbearable pain alone to African-Americans, individual African-Americans cannot rememory their slave past. Therefore, African-Americans need a communal sense of narrative in order to reconstruct the truth of their slave past. Thus Morrison uses African-Americans’ oral tradition, Call-and-Response, as her narrative style, which succeeds in a communal sense of speaking. Through Call-and-Response, African-Americans call the painful past to the surface of consciousness. This calling makes conversation possible in which they explain why they avoided offending each other, and how to heal their wounds. Finally, Morrison suggests that the U.S. has a responsibility to remember this painful and unbearable past. In conclusion, this thesis aims to focus on the meaning of rememory and the ways of combining form and content in Beloved. Lastly, this thesis suggests that Beloved is a hopeful narrative because African-Americans’ fragmented relationships can be recovered through rememory and Call-and-Response.
