Abstract
This paper is an analysis of Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953)'s 「Violin Sonata No.2, op.94a〔1943〕」, one of the works played at the graduation concert by Choi Yun-jin to complete the courses for a master's degree. The Violin Sonata No.2, which was adapted from the Flute Sonata, op.94 in 1943, was arranged according to the suggestion by David Oistrakh (1908-1974) and premiered by Oistrakh(violin) and L. Overin(piano) in Moscow in June, 1943. As Benard Shaw called the work humorous masterpiece of violin music, it expressed Prokofiev's unique cheerful and comic atmosphere well. By analyzing the 「Violin Sonata No.2, op.94a〔1943〕, which was arranged from his flute sonata in 1943, this paper aims at understanding the overall structure of each movement; development method of the theme; and musical characteristics including chord, form, the flow of melody and rhythm, and researching how his theory and technique in his works were applied to music so as to study his neoclassical trend, musical style and philosophy. The ultimate goal of this paper is to play the work in a way the composer aimed by understanding his intention.
