Abstract
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a musician who represented the grown Romanticism of the late 19th century. He valued the sense of classical modeling and was a successor of the tradition of German music. Most of his classically romantic works consisted of chamber music pieces and symphonies but equally included piano pieces as well. Brahms's piano music forms reflected Bach's contrapuntal elements, and Schumann's harmonies and rhythm progression. However, he achieved his own music world beyond mere imitation. The purpose of this paper was to understand the classical techniques shown in Brahms's and the romantic tendencies appearing in the works of Brahms through romantic elements. This paper also investigated on what backgrounds tendencies the Romanticism he belonged to had an influence Brahms’s music world, and examined the characteristics of his music. Brahms wrote all three piano sonatas. He succeeded to Brahms and built a new sonata form from the Romantic era. In particular, features five types of movements, the largest scale. The first movement shows a sonata form; the second movement a complex 3-part form, and the third movement the ABA scherzo form. And the fourth creates the Intermezzo form and the fifth consists of a rondo. In that the second and fourth movements closely associated with the theme were placed between the first, third, and fifth movements, the formal symmetry and experimentation as Classism elements are found. In other words, the second and fourth movements are similar in composition and in the nature of the theme centered around the third movement. The composition of each beginning and end portion in the first and fourth movements is the same, which is another feature. In particular, an approach of quoting the theme of the previous as it is, or an approach of reusing it in a modified form was already used in and , but in this sonata the theme is being transformed, which may be difficult to easily identify the relationship. This study demonstrated that Brahms's was a piece of music where the Romantic classical music form had been well expressed. The structure of contrapuntal techniques and the thematic transformation techniques consisted in order for the pure purpose of the composition, which thus maintained Classicism tradition. In this sonata, non-harmonic tones were frequently used and chord progression varied. In addition, as stanzas were quoted and various formats were composed, which naturally showed romanticism. And melodic lines were used through octave, or the third degree and the sixth degree, and various rhythm forms, such as syncopation, cross rhythm, and hemiola, were also used. This thus showed the freedom of romanticism. Brahms is a 'classical romantic composer' who created his own original music by allowing classical forms and romantic contents to coexist.
