상상 동물을 통한 초월적 세계로의 전환

Abstract

In this study, the theoretical facts, and the motivation for the imaginary creature metamorphosis in art work were researched. This is also a work of research concerned with a researcher that longed for converting to a transcendent world, contrary to reality, through the use of imaginary creatures as materials. This was researched through an analysis of the artist’s work to know how imaginary creatures' mutations mingle with the work. It is impossible for a human to transforms physically or psychologically as other existences in the real world. However, it is possible to change in a dream world. Thus human experience changes through the limitless freedom of the imagination in a dream creating a certain desired existence. Humans are not always satisfied with their form. Humans desire to become something more as they look back on themselves dissatisfied. We dream not only to renew oneself, but also craving the freedom to transcend out of reality, and transform out of other existences. The concern for one’s inner desire, passing down from primitive and ancient era, inspired us to study the mutation of researcher’s imagination. The struggle of overcoming limits and transcending reality through mutation has continued from the past up till now. Imaginary creatures have appeared in classics such as: the classic myth, "SanHyeKyoung"(B.C. 400) from China. Imaginary creatures were strangely and oddly formed, existing as a combination of various animals. The ancients wanted to overcome their limitations by making imaginary creatures. The imaginary creatures made by the ancients possessed the spirit of liberty and freedom for breaking out of reality. A researcher illustrated the human's desire to leap into a new existence through imaginary creatures. This wish for mutation, which has greatly affected life, was expressed as the imaginary creature in the work. The imaginary creatures in this paper were reborn as a new image by combining each other species. As for the theoretical study, I researched the symbols of the imaginary creatures in "SanHyeKyoung" and the concept of mutation. This research helped to understand what was expressed through the imaginary creatures in "SanHyeKyoung". It brought to light the symbols of the beast and the fish as a subject of mutation, and the water in the background of the work. Subsequently, the analysis of the "Fisheetah" and the "Lionfish" in the work helped to reveal what is being expressed. Each "Fisheetah" and "Lionfish" were illustrated by the formation of variations in each work. In the work, it helps to dream in the oneiric world by transforming into the transcendental world. It feels to resolve a conflict by a conversion to the transcendental world. This paper outlines the human's desire to forego reality and transcend into a mystical world of imaginary creatures through a total of 7 works. As for the analysis of the process of the work, this paper must be given a chance to develop a wider view hereafter.;본 논문은 상상 동물을 소재로 하여 현실에서 벗어나 초월적 세계로의 전환을 갈망하는 본인의 바람에 관한 작품 연구로 작품 속 상상 동물의 변신 모티프와 이론적 근거를 살펴보았다. 나아가 상상 동물의 변신이 작품 속에서 어떻게 이루어졌는지 작품 분석을 통해 알아보고자 하였다. 인간은 현실 세계에서 다른 존재로의 신체적 또는 정신적 변신이 불가능하다. 그러나 상상 속 변신은 언제 어디서든 가능하다. ‘상상력을 가지고 있다는 것은 내적 풍요, 이미지의 자발적인 부단한 흐름을 향유한다는 것이다.’ 미르치아 엘리아데, 『이미지와 상징』, 이재실 옮긴이, 까치, 1998, p.24. 이처럼 인간은 무한한 상상력을 가지고 자신이 바라는 어떤 존재로의 전환을 상상 속에서 경험하며 그 상상력을 통해 자유를 경험한다. 인간은 현실에서의 자신의 모습에 늘 만족하지 못하고 결여된 자신을 되돌아보며 더 나은 모습을 찾고자 욕망한다. 지금의 내가 아닌 새로운 자신을 꿈꾸며 현실을 벗어나 초월적 세계로의 자유를 갈망하고 다른 존재로의 변신을 꿈꾼다. 원시ㆍ고대 시대부터 지속 되어왔던 이러한 내적인 욕망에 대한 관심은 본인이 변신의 이미지를 소재로 삼아 본 논문을 연구하는 계기가 되었다. 변신을 통해 현실을 초월하고 한계를 극복하려는 시도는 과거부터 지금까지 계속 되어왔다. 그리스ㆍ로마 신화나 중국의 『산해경(山海經, B.C. 400년경)』같은 동서양의 고전에는 상상의 동물들이 등장한다. 상상의 동물들은 기묘하고 이상한 형상을 하고 있으며 여러 동물이 결합된 형태로 존재한다. 고대인들은 상상의 동물을 만들어냄으로써 자신들의 한계를 극복하고자 하였다. 고대인들이 만든 상상 동물에는 현실을 벗어나는 해방과 자유의 정신이 담겨있으며 그들은 정신적 변신을 통해 삶의 굴레로부터 해방을 느낀다. 본인은 상상 동물을 통해 새로운 존재로의 도약을 꿈꾸는 인간의 바람을 본인 작업에 드러내었다. 본인의 변신에 대한 바람은 본인 삶에 많은 영향을 주었으며 이것은 본인의 작업에 등장하는 상상 동물로 표현된다. 본 논문에서 살펴보게 될 상상 동물들은 서로 다른 종의 동물을 결합하는 방법을 통해 새로운 이미지로 재탄생 된다. 이에 본인은 논문의 이론적 연구로 변신의 개념과『산해경』에 등장하는 상상 동물의 상징성을 살펴볼 것이다. 『산해경』에 나타난 상상의 동물을 알아봄으로써 본인이 상상 동물을 표현함에 도움을 받고자 한다. 그리고 본인의 작품에서 변신의 주체가 되고 있는 맹수와 물고기의 상징성에 대해 알아보고 작품의 배경이 되는 물의 상징성을 살펴보고자 한다. 다음으로는 본인의 작품 속에 드러나는 ‘피쉬타(Fisheetha)’와 ‘라이언피쉬(Lionfish)’를 분석함으로써 그들을 통해 초월적 세계로의 비상이 어떤 표현 방법으로 이루어졌는지 살펴볼 것이다. 본인의 작품에서는 ‘피쉬타’와 ‘라이언피쉬’ 두 개의 개체가 각각의 작업에서 변주의 방식으로 작업에 드러나게 된다. 작품에서 보인 상상 동물로의 변신을 통해 본인은 몽상적 세계를 꿈꾸며 그 초월적 세계로의 전환을 통해 갈등이 해소됨을 느낀다. 본인은 총 일곱 점의 작품을 통하여 현실 초월적 세계로 나아가고자 하는 인간의 바람을 상상 동물로 승화시켜 표현하였다. 이와 같이 본 연구를 바탕으로 본인의 작업을 정리하고 분석해 나가는 과정을 통해 보다 넓은 시각을 가지고 앞으로 더욱 발전할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이라 기대한다.
