돌의 집적성에 대한 심상표현

Abstract

우리는 세상을 살아가면서 수많은 존재들과 만난다. 사람과의 만남, 자연과의 만남, 사물과의 만남 등등 이렇게 존재하는 만물(萬物)들과의 다채로운 만남을 통해 우리는 마주하게 되는 대상을 마음으로 느끼게 되는 순간을 경험하게 되며, 특히 예술가에게 있어 이러한 순간은 자신만의 조형언어로 그 긴밀한 교류를 펼칠 수 있게 해주는 뮤즈(muse)적 장치로 작용한다. 영국의 시인이자 화가인 윌리엄 블레이크(William Blake, 1757~1827)는 ‘한 낱의 모래알에서 세계를 보고, 한 송이 들꽃에서 천국을 보아라.’ 라고 하였다. 주변에 흔하게 굴러다니는 돌 하나를 주워 와서 바라보다가 대지를 느끼고, 자연을 느끼며, 그 안에 있는 꿈틀거림을 마주한다. 그냥 가만히 있는 듯한 하나의 사물이지만 그 안에 무엇인가 ‘있다’는 증거의 생(生)을 마주하게 될 때의 무한한 감동이 있다. 그리고 그 근원을 찾다보면 우리는 그것의 생(生), 즉 살아‘있음’이 존재하게 되기까지의 그 사물에 무수하게 쌓인 시간과 공간의 집적(集積)을 접하게 된다. 비단 돌 뿐만 아니라 세상에 존재하는 만물(萬物)이 그럴 것이다. 살아가면서 마주하게 되는 모든 물(物)에는 그것만의 집적이 있고 호흡이 있다. 어느 것 하나 쉬이 생겨난 것은 없다. 이 세상의 물(物)이 개별적 세계의 가치를 지닐 수 있는 이유는, 아마도 그것만의 수많은 집적(集積)이 있어서 일 것이다. 본 연구는 단순히 사물을 ‘보는 것’에 그치지 않고 한 사물의 존재를 마주했을 때 느끼고 대화하며 표출하는 자의 역할을 하는 예술가와 하나의 사물이 만나 이루어진 심상(心象)을, 동양적 세계관으로 본 물(物)이 지니고 있는 ‘집적(集積)성’으로 연구해 보았다. 사물과 인간과의 만남을 세계(世界)와 또 다른 세계와의 만남으로 봄과 동시에, 작은 사물하나가 가지고 있는 생명력과 그 안에 집적되어 있는 무수한 시간과 공간, 그리고 그것들을 구성하고 있는 고유의 세계를 긴밀한 교류를 통해 살피는 것이 본인의 작품이다. 존재안의 거대한 세계가 함축하고 있는 무한한 집적과 그 존재와의 교감을 이야기 하고자, 본인의 작품에서는 주로 ‘돌’이라는 사물을 환유(換喩)적 소재로 사용하였다. 그러므로 돌이 지닌 역사, 상징과 집적을 살펴보고, 선행 작품에서 같은 맥락으로 돌을 사용한 예로, 전통 동양회화의 「괴석도」, 이우환의 「관계항」을 살펴보아 역사적으로 인간이 돌과 교감하여 얻어낸 심상과 해석을 이해해 앞으로의 본인 작업 연구에 참고하도록 한다. 표현 방법의 연구에 있어서는 축적에 의한 표현으로 나타나는 평면성과 ‘적묵(積墨)법’에 의한 방식을 연구해보았고, 형상화된 ‘돌’의 이미지에 나타난 선(線)과 점(點)에 의한 표현을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 무수한 집적이 모인 하나의 덩어리가 가진 세계-우주를 ‘돌’이라는 사물에 기인하여 형상화 한 것이 본인의 심상(心象)이고, 그것을 철학적 이론 바탕으로 탐구해 보고자 한 것이 본 연구의 핵심이다. 이 연구로 우리 주변에 존재하는 만물에 대한 시선과 사물에 집적된 고유세계의 가치를 생각해보는 계기가 되길 바란다.;We meet many people while living a life. Through various kinds of encounters such as meeting with people, nature, and things, we experience the moment at which we feel the objects in our heart. Especially for an artist, such moment functions as a muse-like tool that enables close exchange in one’s own figurative language. William Blake (1757~1827), an English poet and artist, said that “See a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower”. Just through a rolling stone that can be seen easily around us, we can feel the Earth, Nature, and encounter something alive in it. We are touched infinitely when we encounter the life that seems just a static thing without movement. Looking into the origin, we can see the accumulation of time and space piled up in the thing infinitely until it exists as a living thing. It will be applied to not only a stone but also things that exist in this world. Everything in the world that we encounter during our life has its own accumulation and breath. There is nothing that was easily created. This study did not just try to “see” the things but investigated the mind of artists who feel, talk and explore a thing when he/she encounters the thing, in terms of “accumulation feature” of the thing that it possesses. My work sees the encounter between a thing and human beings as the meeting of the world with another world. At the same time, it explores the life in a small thing, the infinite time and space accumulated in it, and the inherent world that the time and space compose of, through the close exchanges. In order to tell the infinite accumulation implied by the giant world of an existence and the communication with the existence, my work mainly used “stones” as metaphorical materials. Therefore, this study explored the history, symbols, and accumulation of stones. Then, it reviewed the previous works of art used stones in the similar way on “Peculiar Stones”(Goe-seok-do) in traditional oriental paintings and “relatum-suggestion”(Gwan-gye-hang) by Lee, U-fan to understand the historical images and interpretations obtained through the communication between human beings and stones for the reference in my work in the future. As for the expression method, this study investigated "plane property" and “Juk-Mook-bub" which is a traditional method by accumulating oriental ink it is called "Mook", focusing on the expressions by lines and dots represented in the image of shaped “stones”. My inner visualization is represented through stones that symbolize the universe accumulated by the infinite things. This study aims to investigate it based on philosophical theories. I hope this study gives an opportunity to make people think of the viewpoint on the things that exist in the world and the value of the inherent world accumulated in things.
