Abstract
This study set out to develop a music program by applying visual thinking and test its effects on the creativity of gifted elementary students, thus providing implications for the development of thinking education programs for gifted elementary students. For those purposes, the study developed a 12-lesson music program based on the visual thinking theory and revised and supplemented the program through experts' verification of its content validity and preliminary research. Program development proceeded in five stages of survey, analysis, design, development and implementation and took total eight months. The regular fourth, fifth, and sixth grade music curriculums, which corresponded to the age groups of the subjects, were applied to the total 12-lesson program along with the theories on the learning cognition of gifted children and visual thinking. The program was revised by three experts on gifted education, elementary education, and music education that tested it for the first time and further revised for the second time according to the results of a preliminary research on a different group of gifted children, thus receiving final supplementation . The subjects include 15 students in a class for gifted students in humanities and social studies at C Elementary School in Seoul. They participated in a music lesson to which visual thinking was applied every Saturday for two months from August to September, 2013. The investigator conducted a preand post-test on creativity before and after the lessons to collect quantitative data and collected qualitative data for qualitative analysis with a research assistant including recording and videotaping, lesson activity logs, essays, reflection logs, field notes, individual interviews, and individual presentations. Employed in the study was the Korean-Creativity Assessment Packet(Jo Yong-tae, 2007), which is a version of Creativity Assessment Packet(CAP) by Williams(1993) standardized to fit the Korean situations. Collected data were analyzed according to the one group pretest-posttest design with the SPSS 22.0 program. The investigator used her insights to analyze the qualitative data collected from the students and followed the phenomenological analysis technique of Colaizzi(1978) for data analysis. The topics and categories stemmed from the Colaizzi analysis technique were tested by three colleagues of the investigator to secure the reliability of the study. The results of pretest-posttest statistical analysis on creativity were summarized as follows: First, the study analyzed mean differences in fluency between the pre- and post-test among the students who experienced music lessons to which visual thinking was applied. As a result, there were statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-test(p<.01). That is, the gifted elementary students who experienced a music program to which visual thinking was applied improved their fluency compared with before the lessons. Second, there were statistically significant differences in mean scores on flexibility between the pre- and post-test among the students who experienced music lessons to which visual thinking was applied(p<.05). That is, the gifted elementary students' thinking flexibility increased after experiencing music lessons to which visual thinking was applied. Third, there were also statistically signisficant differences in mean scores on originality between the pre- and post-test among the students who received music lessons to which visual thinking was applied(p<.05). That is, the thinking originality of the gifted elementary students improved compared with before the music lessons to which visual thinking was applied. Finally, the study also analyzed mean differences in sophistication between the pre- and post-test among the students who experienced music lessons to which visual thinking was applied. As a result, there were statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-test(p<.001). The thinking sophistication of the gifted elementary students enhanced after experiencing music lessons to which visual thinking was applied. The results of qualitative analysis can be summarized in two aspects: first, the gifted students who experienced music lessons to which visual thinking was applied got to use music as a tool of thinking through the lessons, which reveals a way to connect musical elements with thinking elements or symbolize thinking. Then, the gifted students who experienced music lessons to which visual thinking was applied had a new chance related to thinking. It is categorized as an encounter with new opportunities, which can be explained as opportunities for imagination, expression, and respect for different thoughts. It is thus apparent that the gifted students made various uses of visual thinking through the music program developed in the study and used visual thinking to express their creativity. The present study thus proposed a need for music lessons to which visual thinking was applied for thinking education for gifted children based on the findings. It is accordingly necessary to expand the scope of subjects to include gifted students in math, science, and art, conduct a research on the further fragmentation, development, and application of visual thinking-based music programs. The study will hopefully lead to the further expanded perspective for gifted education via the medium of the music subject and to the renewed perception of music education as a tool for the thinking education of gifted students rather than mere musicality and instrument education.
