Abstract
Various purchasing patterns emerge as the development in technology brings about a lot of new cultural trends. Contrary to traditional in-store shopping where consumers can touch the product, online or TV home shopping provide descriptive or visual information about the product to consumers. Therefore, the information consumers receive has entered a new phase. Hence, following the changes in the purchasing environment and the resultant change in consumers’ perspectives, it is important to understand the ways in which people use their sensory cues to evaluate products. Recent research focuses on the importance of imagery effect on consumers’ overall perception of the product, when tactile information in a remote purchasing environment is absent. However, the same stimulus can have a substantially different effect between individuals. This report examines the ways in which difference sensory cues and individual differences in imagery processing influence individuals’ attitudes to products. Previous research found that simply touching an object can create ownership of the objects (Peck & Shu, 2009,2011). Peck, Barger & Webb (2012) extended the study about haptic imagery effect on perceived ownership and perceptions of physical control based on endowment effect. Endowment effect means valuing objects more highly when people own a certain product. As a result, vividness of haptic imagery increased perceived ownership and perceptions of physical control. This research is designed to replicate the Peck et al. (2012) findings, concerning the effect of the imagery on individual attitudes to objects. Specifically, this paper focuses on two points: a) the ways in which sensory cues affect attitudes to products b) the ways in which imagery processing differences influence attitudes to products. Sensory cues consist of 4 conditions: 1) vision 2) haptic imagery with eyes open 3) haptic imagery with eyes closed and 4) vision and touch. The level of imagery processing is divided into two: high and low. Just as Peck et al.(2012) found that preference for touch (“need for touch”) as a covariate was not significant, this research also found that need for touch wasn’t significant. Yet, attitudes to products varied depending on sensory cues. The condition with haptic imagery with eyes closed resulted in the greatest level of attitudes to products. Interestingly, the level of attitudes to products in the case of haptic imagery with eyes closed was even higher than that in the case of actual touch and vision. This research found that imagery with closing one’s eyes positively affects people’s attitudes to products. This finding has some implications for future marketing. Although encouraging consumers to close their eyes and process haptic imagery may come at a high cost, it may be possible for marketers to use the finding in this research when presenting sound information to consumers in a dark space. One of the appropriate places to test this finding is a movie theater, because having viewers in a dark space may have a similar effect on people’s attitudes to products as when viewers engage in haptic imagery with their eyes closed. Although closing one’s eyes is somewhat different from opening one’s eyes in a dark room, it may be worthwhile to further explore and expand this research’s findings in a realistically similar surrounding.
