As modern society changes, the capabilities required as human are also changes. Today, higher capabilities are demanded. What modern society wants is not just calculating skills, but mathematical problem solving abilities. Furthermore, Modern society asks people to be more active. As one of the ways to meet this kind of demand, mathematical modeling study can be applied in the field of education. Mathematical knowledge and strength had been emphasized constantly in curriculums, on the contrary, PISA and TIMSS report showed that Korean students have difficulties in solving problems intended to test higher mathematical abilities. Therefore, it is urgently needed that to provide opportunities for Korean students to think deeply, as the way to do so mathematical modeling can be considered because it presents problems contextualized in real-life. However, there are needs for studies about mathematical modeling at the elementary education level because schools are not in conditions to apply mathematical modeling problems easily, and there are concerns that mathematical modeling is difficult to be done at the elementary education level. Thus, this study is intended to analyze mathematical justification, mathematical communication levels and forms, characteristics that appeared by applying mathematical modeling to 5th grade’s mathematical education. To achieve this purpose, the following research questions were set up. First, what are the levels of the mathematical justification while students are in mathematical modeling education? Second, what are the levels of the mathematical communication while students are in mathematical modeling education? Based on these questions, this study examined various references for mathematical modeling, justification, communication, and 2007 and 2009 revised curriculums. This study was conducted in one class of 5th grade in C elementary school under jurisdiction of Seoul Gangdong District Office of Education. During the study of mathematical modeling education, this study analyzed the process of the students’ communication and justification with their activity sheets and outputs, observation records, and interviews. And it also analyzed the level of their mathematical justification in the pre- and post-test with their detailed response cases. Additionally, by analyzing the activity cases of Group 3 and Group 6 this study researched justification level according to the communication level of change that changes. The research findings on mathematical justification and communication in the process of mathematical modeling problem solving were as follows. For the first research question, Group 3 showed varying levels of justification, and Group 6 has changed a bit. This finding suggests that thinking and expressing a given problem or situation in a mathematical manner do not come easily to elementary school students who usually think through concrete and visible objects. Meanwhile, the students did not show mathematical justification in the preparatory stage in solving the traffic light problem and the marathon course problem, but showed this in model inducement activity. During question inducement activity, mathematical justification level did not appeared to be high enough because when one student who has a high level of achievement led the discussion to solve problems, it ended with lack of mathematical reasoning and delicacy. On the other hand, mathematical justification level was appeared to be high when all group members were participated in the process of solving problem and talked about their thought together, even if the students had different levels of achievement. Mostly in model exploration activity, when the students heard presentations of other groups and took time for self-reflection in group presentations, justification level appeared to be advanced more than before. This result was caused by the students’ effort to review their methods during questioning and answering activities between groups in model exploration activity. As for the second research question, Group 3 showed varying levels of communication, and Group 6 has changed a bit. In second modeling activity, communication level improved by level 1 to 2 compared to first modeling activity, one group (Group 3) showed a higher level of communication with level 2 to 3 in all-round activities. These findings imply that the students were practiced to calculate by text books in the mathematics class, rather than to solve problems in small groups they were used to solve problems on their own individually, so as the result, they find hard to have communication and moreover, to have high standards of communication. While the students solves the traffic light problem and the marathon course problem, there were not much of conversation to obtain information in the preparatory stage, but in model inducement activity as discussion to solve problem began in earnest, conversation also began. On the traffic light problem, for example, the students used divisor and multiple to find the way to divide time, measured some in their own way. On the marathon problem, the students thought various courses to discover the course that meets given conditions, and discussed to build efficient courses. In model inducement activity, first the student had difficulties in communication, could not respond properly to other students’ opinion, but in second trial they made use of their experience and responded others opinion in the course of finding solutions. Similar to mathematical justification, mathematical communication tended to be more active after model exploration activity when model applying activity occurred. This phenomenon occurred when the students found out problems of their methods cognitively. Communication levels were different in each group, but as the students were getting used to give their opinions and refute other opinions, they started to be interested generally. The analysis results of the two groups’ cases of mathematical justification and communication showed that the students of “Group 3” exhibited a moderate level of mathematical justification and communication in the first modeling but in the second modeling they exhibited a high level of mathematical justification and communication. The students of “Group 6” showed some improvement in mathematical justification and communication in the first and second modeling. As a result of analyzing the two groups’ cases, mathematical communication levels had an effect on mathematical justification, and “Group 3” who communicated actively on four areas of communication showed significant advance in the level of justification, “Group 6” who communicated actively on speaking area but not on every areas showed lack of reasoning, and it affected mathematical justification. This means, from now on mathematical education should provide the students with mathematical justification and communication learning, and to do this, a class which contains mathematical communication experiences will be needed. Based on those findings, several suggestions were made. First, it is required to present problem situations that can be applied in school mathematics class, and to examine different aspects of mathematical thinking ability other than mathematical justification and communication in mathematical modeling problem solving process. Second, on account of a big role of the students’ communication in activities, it is needed that studies on communication levels and forms with their high level of abilities. Third, elementary mathematical text book must have problem situations related to real-life, to make the students think mathematically not to just calculate by route. Fourth, the school should utilize descriptive assessments by changing the methods of assessment in current education fields, to use these assessments to following learning. Finally, it is necessary to consider how to apply phased modeling that has affect on low level students. This study was effective to mid-upper level students, not to all students. Low level students tended to have difficulties in basic calculation therefore methods of teaching and learning for low level students should be thought as well.;변화하는 현대 사회는 사람에게 요구되는 능력도 함께 변하고 있으며, 보다 고차적인 능력을 요구하고 있다.
