영어권 외국인을 위한 가야금 교본 분석

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 현재 국내 영어로 출간된 가야금 교본을 선생님과 외국인 학생을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여, 내용 구성을 알아보고 각 교본의 특징 및 보완점은 무엇인가를 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 대상은 외국인을 위해 영어로 출간된 가야금 교본 4권으로 모두 초보자들을 위한 교본이다. 교재를 분석하기 위해 선생님 197명과 외국인 학생 26명에게 교본 구성과 수업에 관한 설문을 실시하였다. 설문 결과를 기준으로 각 교본들이 잘 구성되어 있는지 잘 된 점과 보완되어야 할 점이 무엇인지를 분석하였다. 설문 조사 결과 초급과정에는 오른손·왼손 수법 연습곡과 창작곡, 중급과정에서는 장단과 산조를 학습하여야 하는 것으로 나타났다. 민요 학습과정에 대하여 선생님들은 중급과정, 학생들은 초급과정으로 다른 응답을 하였다. 교본 개발에 관해서 선생님(72.6%)과 학생(50%) 모두 각 단계별 독립적인 교본이 필요하다는 결과가 나왔다. 연습곡 개발에 대해서 선생님은 연주곡과 연습곡을 분리하고 연습곡의 개발이 필요하다(61.9%)는 의견이 높은 반면, 학생은 현재와 같이 연습곡과 연주곡이 병행(57.7%)되어야 한다는 결과가 나왔다. 학습을 효과적으로 하기 위해 수법을 배워야 하는 순서로는 선생님(74.1%)과 학생(38.5%) 모두 <오른손 수법 중 단순 수법> → <오른손 수법 중 이중 수법> → <왼손 수법>이 많았다. 학생의 설문 조사 결과 중 <오른손 수법 중 단순 수법> → <왼손 수법> → <오른손 수법 중 이중 수법>의 순서도 똑같이 학습을 효과적으로 할 수 있다는 응답이 나왔다. 이에 따라 연구대상인 교본 4권의 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 용어 설명의 평균 비율은 13%로 전체 비율의 10%를 넘게 나타났다. 이재경과 성심온, 성상희의 교본의 경우 15%로 똑같았으나 최상화·엄세나의 교본은 5%로 평균 비율보다 낮게 나타났다. 둘째, 초급과정에 포함시켜야 한다고 조사 된 오른손․왼손 연습곡, 민요, 창작곡의 비율을 살펴보면 이재경의 교본 33%, 성심온의 교본 10%, 성상희의 교본 22%, 최상화·엄세나의 교본이 43%로 최상화․엄세나의 책이 초급과정을 가장 많이 다루고 있었다. 그 다음으로는 이재경, 성상희, 성심온의 책 순서이다. 평균 비율은 27%로 초급과정이 수록된 각 책의 비율이 낮은 것도 있지만 높은 교본도 있음을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 중급과정에 포함시켜야 한다고 조사된 산조의 경우 평균 비율은 12%였다. 이재경의 교본 17%, 성상희의 교본 16%, 최상화·엄세나의 교본 13%, 성심온의 교본 0% 순으로 나타났다. 성심온의 책은 산조를 다루고 있지 않았다. 중급과정의 비율은 대부분 소개하는 차원에서 짧은 산조를 다루고 있어 비율이 높게 나타나지는 않았다. 본 연구를 통해 가야금 교본이 나아갈 방향에 대하여 제언을 하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 분석한 교재들을 통해 개정판이 나올 경우 어떠한 것들이 더 추가되어야 할지 알 수 있었다. 수법을 익히기 위한 연습곡은 모든 책에서 추가·수정 되어야 한다. 오른손과 왼손 수법을 익힌 후 각각의 수법을 사용하여 연주할 수 있는 연습곡을 싣는 것이 필요하다. 장단은 장구와 장단 기호에 대한 설명이 추가되어야 한다. 또한 각 교본에 소개된 민요와 관련된 장단이 포함되어야 한다. 장단 기호는 최상화·엄세나의 교본에서와 같이 정간보식 표기와 서양식 표기를 함께 사용하고 축약기호도 함께 사용한다면 좋을 것이다. 둘째, 분석한 교재들을 통해 교본이 단계별로 분리된다면 어떤 내용들이 수록되어야 하는지 알 수 있었다. 초급과정의 교본에서는 가야금의 역사와 종류, 조율법, 부들 매는 법, 가야금의 구조와 명칭, 수법 설명 등이 포함한 이론과정, 오른손·왼손 수법을 익히기 위한 연습곡, 왼손 수법이 쉬운 곡(경기민요)과 장단, 외국인들이 익숙한 곡들이 수록되어야 한다. 중급과정의 교본은 민요와 창작곡· 산조의 수법(구르는 수법, 꺽는 수법, 양손 수법 등의 수법)을 소개하고 그에 맞는 연습곡, 민요수법이 많이 사용되는 동부·남도·서도 민요와 장단, 양손을 사용하는 12현 창작곡(침향무, 숲속의 이야기 등), 10분에서 20분정도의 짧은 산조와 장단을 수록해야 한다.;The purpose of this study is to conduct a survey on specialist teachers and foreign students about Gayageum textbooks in English on the market and to examine the organization of their contents in order to find their characteristics and things to supplement. And through analysis of Gayageum textbooks published in English, this study attempts to examine the appropriate stage for learning techniques and melodies like folk song and sanjo. The significance of this study could be found in that by recognizing the understanding and the demand of foreigners, it could contribute to improvement in quality of Gayageum education. For this study, 4 Gayageum textbooks published in English for foreign beginners were selected. To analyze the textbooks, questionnaires were distributed to 197 specialist teachers at or over the level of undergraduate students and 26 foreigners who are learning or have learned Gayageum to ask about the organization of textbooks and lessons. The questionnaire of Kim Mi-jung (2003) was modified for the purpose of this study after analysis of the organization of the contents of the textbooks to find their common denominators. The contents of the questionnaire include level of understanding of the contents, the degree that the textbook helps the lesson, period of learning each content of the textbook, the quantity of études, development of études, period of learning Jangdan, effective order of learning technique, and direction for developing textbooks. According to the results of survey, analysis was carried out about how well each textbook is organized and what should be done for supplement. The result of survey showed that études for right and left hand technique and modern songs for the beginner’s course, Jangdan and sanjo for intermediate course should be educated. About folk songs, teachers answered for the intermediate course, students answered for the beginner’s course. Concerning development of textbooks, both teachers (72.6%) and students (50%) showed that an independent textbook for each stage is needed. Concerning development of études, teachers showed that melodies to be played and études should be separated and development of études are needed (61.9%) while students showed that melodies to be played and études should be used side by side as now (57.7%). As for the order to learn technique for effective learning, most of the teachers (74.1%) and students (38.5%) showed that <simple playing technique in right-hand playing techniques> → <double playing technique in right-hand playing techniques> → <left-hand playing technique>. Of the result of survey on students, the order of <simple playing technique in right-hand playing techniques> → <left-hand playing technique> → <double playing technique in right-hand playing techniques> can be educated as effectively. A summary of the analysis of the 4 textbooks studied in this paper is as follows: (1) The average percentage of explanation of terms was 13% which is more than 10% of overall percentage. The textbooks Korean Gayageum playing Guide by Lee Jae-kyung, Korean Gayageum Zither A Practical Guide by Sung Shim-on, Gayageum Twelve String Zither by Sung Sang-hee showed 15% each, but An Easy Korean-English GAYAGEUM Guide Book by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na showed 5% which is lower than the average. (2) As for études for right-hand and left-hand which was to be included for the beginner’s course according to the survey, it was shown as follows: Korean Gayageum playing Guide by Lee Jae-kyung (33%), Korean Gayageum Zither A Practical Guide by Sung Shim-on (11%), Gayageum Twelve String Zither by Sung Sang-hee (22%), An Easy Korean-English GAYAGEUM Guide Book by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na (41%). The textbook by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na was dealing with beginner’s course the most. The next was in the order of the textbook by Lee Jae-kyung, by Sung Sang-hee, and by Sung Shim-on. Average percentage was 27%, which indicates that some textbooks cover little of beginner’s course, but some cover much. (3) As for the intermediate course (sanjo), average percentage was 11%. Korean Gayageum playing Guide by Lee Jae-kyung (16%) and Gayageum Twelve String Zither by Sung Sang-hee (16%) are the same, An Easy Korean-English GAYAGEUM Guide Book by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na was 13%, Korean Gayageum Zither A Practical Guide by Sung Shim-on was 0%. The textbook by Sung Shim-on did not deal with sanjo. The percentage for the intermediate course mostly consisted of brief introductory courses of sanjo, which was not so high. (4) Textbooks covering Jungak were Korean Gayageum playing Guide by Lee Jae-kyung, Korean Gayageum Zither A Practical Guide by Sung Shim-on, An Easy Korean-English GAYAGEUM Guide Book by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na. In case of the textbook by Sung Shim-on, études for Jungak technique included Oh-sun-bo and Jung-gan-bo, and the textbooks by Lee Jae-kyung, Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na offered Jungak-gok as Oh-sun-bho only. And An Easy Korean-English GAYAGEUM Guide Book by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na covered scores for playing modern melodies and folk songs for duet. Through the present study, I would like to make a proposal for the direction of Gayageum textbook as follows: First, through the textbooks analyzed, I was able to know what should be added when revised versions are published. Études to practice techniques in all textbooks should be supplemented and amended. It would be desirable to include a couple of études that could be practiced by using each technique after learning right and left-hand techniques. As for Jangdan, exaplanations about Janggu and Jangdan notes should be added. And Jangdan related to folk songs introduced in each textbook should be included. Jangdan notes should use both the Jungganbo-style notation and the Western-style notation as in the textbook by Choi Sang-hee and Um Sae-na. And it is recommended to use abbreviation notes as well. Second, through textbooks analyzed, I was able to know what kinds of contents should be included if the textbooks should be divided according to levels. The textbook for beginners should include the history and kinds of Gayageum, tuning methods, how to fasten the boodle, structure of Gayageum and names for parts, theory course including explanation of techniques, études to practice right and left-hand techniques, and easy songs for left-hand techniques like Gyeonggi folk song, Jangdan, children’s songs familiar to foreigners, and modern songs. And the textbook for intermediate course should include folk songs and modern songs, rolling techniques related to Sanjo, snapping techniques, techniques for both hands, and études appropriate for that, folk songs and Jangdan such as Dongbu and Namdo folk songs using left-hand techniques more than Gyeonggi folk song, modern songs like new 12-string song Chimhyangmoo and story in the forest, and short Sanjo and Jangdan of 10 to 20 minutes length.
