상담자 발달에 신앙경험이 갖는 의미

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of counselors' faith experiences in counseling and counselor development. Using in-depth interviews, six experienced counselors reported faith experiences in their personal lives. In the course of interview procedure, faith experiences were presented as critical incidents of professional development by most counselors. In order to better understand counselors' faith experiences in their personal and professional lives, hermeneutical phenomenology was used in this study. Data analysis resulted in 4 major themes including personal relationships with a God, conflicts between faith experiences and traditional counseling approach, integration of faith experiences into counseling, and professional development with faith experiences. Most counselors reported that personal faith experiences have influenced meaningfully their professional development. In other words, not only helped `personal relationships with a God to find meaning of life and also meant healing powers in their personal lives, but also enhanced counselors' competencies in their professional lives. Counselors' faith experiences helped prevent burnout and facilitated persistent professional reflections which have led to pursue solutions for the conflicts between traditional counseling approach neglected spiritual dimensions and faith experiences. The Protestant counselors positively tried to incorporate spirituality into counseling because they perceived all individuals as the organisms have spirituality. The skilled counselors coped with the inner conflicts of counseling process by wisdom through daily prayers in their personal lives. Implicit prayers were often used to help clients in the counseling process. In regard to the development of expertise and growth of the skilled counselors, personal life events encountering a living God in suffering and professional reflections with conflicts were driven to facilitate their professional individualization. Strategies that experienced counselors tried to incorporate spirituality into counseling varied. Two codes concerning spiritual and secular approach were used individually in the counseling process. The participants also used Biblical understanding with clients' suffering and helped to find the transcendent meaning of life in the case conceptualization. Daily religious rituals like prayers were mentioned as important factors to facilitate continuous self-reflection in their counseling motives and process. Integration of faith experiences into counseling seemed to be concerned with enhancing counselors' competency, commitment in counseling relationship, acceptance of limitations, and reconstructing counselor education. In conclusion, this study proposed the counseling implications and further research based on the meaning of counselors' faith experiences. This study can contribute to development of counselor education with regard to incorporation spirituality into counseling, as well as suggestion for integrative strategies of professional development in counseling.;이 연구의 목적은 상담의 효과에 있어 핵심적 요소가 되는 상담자 요인과 관련하여 상담자 발달에서 의미있게 경험하는 개인적인 삶의 신앙경험들이 상담에 영향을 주거나 통합되어가는 현상을 깊이있게 이해하는 데에 일차적인 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 6명의 기독인 상담전문가들을 대상으로 개인적인 신앙경험이 상담자로서의 발달에 어떻게 연결되는가와 관련하여 개방형 심층 면담을 진행했으며, 개인간 또는 개인내적인 경험세계의 이해에 초점을 두고 해석학적 현상학 방법을 사용하여 질적 분석을 실시하였다. 면담 과정에서 대부분의 연구 참여자들이 상담자로서 삶의 원동력이 되는 핵심적 경험으로 개인의 신앙경험을 의미있게 진술하였으며, 이는 상담의 의미와 상담자로서의 발달에 깊은 연관을 갖는 것으로 드러났다. 상담전문가로서의 삶에서 개인적으로 경험하는 신앙경험은 상담자로서의 삶을 살아가는 데에 근원적 힘의 원천이 되고 있었으며, 하나님과의 관계 경험은 상담자 개인의 삶에서 삶의 의미와 치유의 경험이자 상담자로서 통찰적 지혜를 얻는 대상으로 경험되고 있었다. 결과적으로, 하나님과의 관계 경험은 기독인 상담자의 인격적 성숙과 전문성 발달에 핵심적인 요인으로 드러났다. 이는 개인적인 삶에서 하나님과의 인격적인 관계 경험은 상담자로서의 지속적인 자기 돌아봄과 자기성찰을 촉진하기 때문으로 보인다. 연구 참여자들은 상담자 발달 초기에 기존의 전통적인 상담접근이 갖는 틀과의 가치 충돌과 한계를 경험하였으며, 상담의 경험이 축적되어가면서 더욱 개인의 신앙경험과 상담의 통합을 위한 창의적인 시도들을 하였다. 숙련된 상담자들은 객관적이고도 입증가능한 기법을 중시하면서 중립적인 상태로서의 상담자 역할을 강조해 온 기존 상담접근의 오랜 영향에 의하여, 인간 존재의 영적 부분을 소홀히 다루거나 소외시켜 온 전통적 상담과의 갈등을 민감하게 다뤄가면서 상담에서의 영적 인간 이해, 성경적 사례 개념화, 하나님과의 관계 경험을 통한 지혜 등을 상담에 통합하는 노력을 융통성있게 시도하고 있었다. 즉, 성숙한 상담자 발달의 특성가운데 하나로 드러나는 상담자 유능성은 한 개인으로서 신앙경험을 통해 깨닫게 되는 실존적 존재 의미를 상담자의 통합적인 발달 자원으로 상담에 함께 가져가는 상담의 재구성 현상으로 연결되었다. 구체적으로는 상담에서 내담자에 따라 두 개의 코드를 가지고서 자유롭게 사용하거나, 자신의 신앙경험과 성경에 기초한 영적차원을 고려한 인간이해의 관점에서 새로운 사례개념화 접근을 통합하는 시도들이 이루어졌다. 이러한 시도들은 결과적으로 상담자로서의 전문성 발달과 유능감을 경험하거나, 내담자 존중으로 상담관계에 몰입하기, 한계에 대한 깊은 수용, 상담자 교육에서의 통합적 적용과 돌아봄으로 의미있게 연결되었다. 또한, 이러한 현상의 특징은 기독인 상담자로서 소진되지 않고 지속적으로 상담에의 열정을 유지하는 비결이 되기도 하였다. 상담자마다 개인적인 신앙경험과 이를 상담과정에 통합해 나가는 특성은 상담자로서의 발달 배경이나 개인적인 고통의 경험, 신앙경험을 갖게 된 계기 등의 요인에 따른 개인간 차이가 드러났다. 20대 초반에 신앙경험을 갖게 되면서 하나님과의 관계가 개인적인 회복의 경험이자 상담자로서의 삶에도 절대적 의미로 연결된 두 명의 연구 참여자들에게는 상담이나 상담자 교육에서 영적 가치에 입각한 사례개념화나 영적 개입의 적극적인 시도들에 있어 유사한 특성을 드러내면서도 개인간 차이가 나타났다. 또한, 다른 네 명의 연구 참여자들은 어린 시절부터의 오랜 신앙경험과 더불어 상담과 신앙경험간의 갈등을 해결하기 위하여 적극적으로 상담과 신앙간 학문적 통합의 공부에 일찍이 관심을 기울이거나, 영적 민감성을 지속적으로 키워감으로써 심리학적 언어와 신앙적 언어의 코드를 유연하게 사용하면서 초월의 주제까지 다뤄주는 등 기존 상담학과 영성의 통합적 시도들을 하는 면에서 유사성을 드러내었다. 한편, 연구 참여자들이 보이는 상담자 전문성 발달의 특성가운데 개인적인 신앙과 전문가로서의 상담을 ‘함께’ 가져간다는 점과 ‘하나님과의 관계 경험이 상담에서 핵심’이라고 인식하는 점은 공통적인 핵심 요소로 드러났다. 개인적인 삶에서 의미있는 신앙경험의 축적과 연결되는 상담자 전문성 발달은 상담에서의 질적 변화와 더불어 상담자 교육에서의 통합적 적용으로 함께 연결된다는 측면에서 공통적이었다. 이러한 결과는 일반적으로 상담자 발달에서 기존의 체계적인 실습훈련에 의한 인지적 구조의 변화에 초점을 두었던 수퍼비전이 갖는 한계를 보완해준다. 숙련된 상담자로서, 자신의 개인적인 신앙경험이 상담자로서의 인격적 성숙과 상담과정 전반에서의 전문적 성장을 가져옴을 인식하고, 이를 상담자 교육에 함께 창의적으로 통합해가는 시도들, 즉, 수퍼비전에서 상담자의 영적 자원의 인식을 도우면서, 인격적 성숙과 지속적 자기성찰을 격려하는 등의 요소들은 새로운 통합적인 수퍼비전 모델을 개발해가는 데에 있어 구체적 전략에 대한 안내로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 숙련된 상담자들의 경우, 모호하게 개인적으로 던져진 채로 남겨진 갈등 요소들에 대하여 보다 긍정적으로 받아들이면서 능동적으로 풀어가는 갈등 해결의 노력을 기울이는데 이는 상담자의 전문성 발달에 직결되는 특성으로 드러났다. 본 연구는 상담자 발달에서 삶의 의미있는 경험들을 통한 인격적 성숙의 중요성 뿐만 아니라 영적 갈등에 대한 민감한 인식과 해결의 노력이 상담자로서의 전문성 발달에 어떻게 연결되는가를 심층적으로 탐색하여 드러냄으로써, 상담자 발달에 대한 통합적이고도 균형잡힌 이해의 지평을 넓혀갈 수 있도록 하는 안내를 제공한다고 보여진다.
