영화 「늑대와 춤을」의 음악 분석에 의한 존 배리의 음악 연구

Abstract

21세기를 살아가고 있는 우리는 이른바 IT(information technology)시대라 칭하는 급진적인 문화의 흐름 속에 있다. 손쉬운 자료검색과 정보 홍수의 시대 속에 영화는 자연스럽게 우리 생활 속에 흡수되었고 이러한 영화나 영상매체를 통해 듣게 되는 영화 속의 음악은 화면으로 나타나는 이야기를 표현해 줄 수 있는 대사의 다른 방법이며, 영화의 극적인 흥미를 더하기 위한 필수 불가결한 요소가 되고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 영화음악의 중요성을 인식하고자 작곡가 존 베리(John Barry, 1933 ~ 2011 )의 『늑대와 춤을 (Dance with Wolves), 1990)』으로 스토리 전개와 등장인물에 따라 표현 되어지는 음악과 영상에 나타나는 상관관계의 연구를 통해 영화음악에 따른 음악과 그의 작곡 스타일을 분석하였다. 먼저 존 배리의 생애와 작품세계를 통해 그의 음악적 배경과 작품 스타일을 알 수 있었고 그의 할리우드 음악사적 위치를 조명해 보기 위해서 다른 동시대의 영화음악 작곡가 들을 중심으로 조사 연구하였다. 존 배리의 작품 중 마지막 아카데미 음악수상작인 『늑대와 춤을』을 선정하여 전체적인 줄거리를 통해 영화의 주제와 전반적인 분위기를 파악하고 영화를 구성하는 각 장면과 그에 따른 모티브와 테마음악들을 분석하였다. 영화음악에 있어 음악의 삽입(In & Out)지점은 작곡가의 음악적 연출의도를 추정하는데 중요한 요소로 『늑대와 춤을』에서 존 배리는 주요 등장인물(던바, 인디언, 늑대친구 등)의 모티브나 테마음악을 설정하여 라이트 모티브적 사용을 하고 있으며, 주요 사건(인디언들과의 전쟁), 그 외의 상황이나 배경을 나타내는 장면을 위해 음악이 삽입되었다. 존 배리의 테마 음악들의 특징은 주선율과 상응하는 대선율이 존재하며 이 두 선율이 이루는 멜로디가 독주 관악기에 할당되어 현악 앙상블과 더불어 서정성을 더욱 풍부하게 하는 특징을 알 수 있었다. 또한 군악대를 연상하게 하는 악기선정, 예를 들면 스네어 드럼의 사용과 트럼펫의 독주 선율 사용 등은 군인의 신분을 가진 주인공의 처한 상황을 표현하는데 일조하였다. 마지막으로 모티브와 테마음악 마다 오케스트레이션과 변주방법을 달리 하였는데, 영화의 장면과 스토리에 부합된 리듬, 악기, 조성과 아티큘레이션 등의 변주가 영화의 몰입을 높이는데 일조되고 극적인 구성요소를 잘 이끌어 내는데 도움을 주는 것 뿐 아니라 작곡가의 스타일을 결정짓는 중요한 요소임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해서 『늑대와 춤을』의 음악은 등장인물의 성격, 배경과 상황에 따른 모티브와 테마를 탁월하게 사용하여 영화의 장면과 음악이 합쳐질 때 눈과 귀, 머릿속에 각인되어 지는 멜로디와 음악이 영화의 스토리와 잘 맞물려 통일성 있게 유지되며 영화감상의 몰입을 높이고 서정적이며 극적인 장면을 연출할 수 있다는 결론에 도달하였다. 또한 『늑대와 춤을』의 음악분석을 통해 존 배리의 음악스타일을 조금이나마 알 수 있었고, 아직 연구되지 않은 존 배리의 영화 음악들에 대한 다양한 분석 및 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이며 더불어 영화 음악의 무궁한 발전을 위해 존 배리 외에 위대한 영화 음악가들과 그들의 작품에 따른 지속적인 연구와 분석이 계속 되어야 한다.;Living in the 21st century, modern people are in a rapid cultural flow called the era of information technology(IT). Movies have naturally been absorbed in daily life in the age of easy data searches and floods of information. Soundtracks heard in movies or other media of video present another way to deliver the lines and tell the story and have been becoming an essential element to increase the dramatic interest of film. Recognizing the importance of film music, this study examined correlations between music and image expressed according to the story development and characters with the works of the composer John Barry(1933 ~ 2011) in Dance with Wolves(1990) and analyzed his music in film and his composition styles. The study reviewed his life and world of musical works to understand his musical backgrounds and work styles and looked into his contemporary film music composers to figure out his status in the history of Hollywood music. Dance with Wolves, for which he won his last Academy Award in music, was selected to understand its theme and overall atmosphere through the plot and analyze each scene and its motive and theme music. In film music, in & out points make an important element to estimate the composer's intention for musical direction. In Dance with Wolves, Barry chose a motive or theme music for each of the main characters(Dunbar, American Indian, Wolf Friend) and used it as Leit Motif. He also inserted music for scenes for major events(battle with American Indians), situations, and backgrounds. His theme music was characterized by counter melodies corresponding to main ones and a solo wind instrument playing those melodies to enrich lyricism further along with the ensemble of string instruments. His choice of instruments to remind the audience of a military band, which includes the snare drum and the trumpet's solo melodies, made a contribution to describing the situation in which the main character, a military man, was. Finally, Barry varied orchestration and variation techniques for each motive and theme music. The rhythms, instruments, and tonalities fit for the scenes and stories and the variations such as articulation further deepened the audience's immersion in the motive and helped the dramatic components emerge to the surface as important elements to determine the composer's style. The findings show that Barry's music in Dance with Wolves worked to use motives and themes fit for the personalities, backgrounds, and situations of the characters in such a distinguished way. When scenes and music are put together, the melodies and music inscribed in the eyes, ears, and brain well correspond with the story and are maintained with unity to promote immersion into the movie and help to create lyrical and dramatic scenes. The study shed more light onto the musical styles of John Barry by analyzing his music in Dance with Wolves. Future study needs to analyze and investigate his works of film music that have not been researched yet in a more diverse fashion and continue to investigate and analyze other great film music composers and their works for the endless growth and development of film music.
