윌리엄 모리스 작품을 응용한 패션 디자인 연구

Abstract

21세기에 끊임없이 변화하는 시대에서 환경에 대한 위기의식을 느끼면서 인간의 라이프스타일(life style)을 비롯한 삶의 전 분야가 자연회귀 양상을 띄어가고 있는 추세이다. 자연과 함께하고 자연과 가장 가깝게 동화될 수 있는지를 연구함으로서 인간은 자연 속에서 아름다움의 가치인 미의식을 발견할 수 있는 것이다. 인간의 미적 추구는 자아를 표출하고 개인의 개성과 가치관을 나타내는 중요한 요소로 작용하면서 현대 패션디자이너들은 끊임없는 디자인 발상의 전환으로 회화, 조각, 건축 등의 다양한 예술 분야로부터 디자인 모티브를 응용하여 자유로운 표현과 독창적인 디자인의 창출을 위하여 노력해왔다. 이에 본 연구는 평범한 생활 용품에 예술적 가치를 부여하여 독창적인 예술품으로 승화시킨 예술가 윌리엄 모리스(William Morris, 1834~1896) 작품에서 표현된 플라워 패턴의 조형성을 분석하고, 현대 기계자수기법을 적용하여, 19세기 윌리엄 모리스의 예술 작품을 21세기 현대 패션디자인에 적용시킴으로써 패션디자인 방법론에 새로운 가능성을 제시하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법은 윌리엄 모리스 작품에 대한 이론적 고찰을 하여 그의 형성 배경과 작품에 나타난 조형적 특징을 살펴보고, 윌리엄 모리스 작품을 응용한 디자인 사례를 연구해 보았다. 또한 기계자수기법의 이론적 고찰과 자수를 응용한 현대 패션 디자인의 작품 사례를 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 윌리엄 모리스의 플라워 패턴 문양을 Adobe Illustrator CS5를 사용해 기계자수의 종류 중 소잉 머신 자수를 활용하여 6벌의 작품을 제작하였다. 이를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 19세기 예술가 윌리엄 모리스의 섬세하고 화려하며 귀족적인 특성을 현대 패션 디자인에 적용하여 재구성함으로써 서구적인 전통성과 현대적인 멋을 결합한 디자인을 제시할 수 있었다. 둘째, 윌리엄 모리스의 플라워 패턴 문양을 재구성, 적용함으로써 패션디자인에 있어서 다양하게 응용 가능한 모티브임을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 평면적인 윌리엄 모리스의 작품을 현대 기계자수기법을 적용함으로써 풍부하고 섬세한 표면 효과를 줄 수 있었다. 넷째, 단순한 실루엣의 현대 패션 디자인에 윌리엄 모리스의 플라워 패턴을 소잉 머신 자수기법으로 적용한 결과, 여성스러움을 부가시킬 수 있었다. 본 연구는 윌리엄 모리스의 플라워 패턴 문양의 구조와 형태의 조형성을 분석하여, 모리스의 패턴 문양을 응용 모티브로 새롭게 재구성하여 의상에 적용시켰다. 앞으로도 윌리엄 모리스의 다양한 플라워 패턴 문양의 지속적인 연구를 통해 다양한 모티브로의 디자인이 확대되기를 기대해 본다.;The 21st century is a time of continuous change, and within this there is a trend for people's lives in all fields, including lifestyle, to return to nature while conscious of the environmental crisis. Researching togetherness with nature and close assimilation with nature means being able to develop an aesthetic consciousness of the value of beauty within nature. An aesthetic pursuit of human beings is to express their egos and works as an important factor in delivering an individual's characteristics and sense of values. Modern fashion designers have tried continuous conceptual shifts and create originative designs. They are now broadening their expression fields in order to create a liberative expression and an originative design by applying various design motives from various areas of arts such as painting, sculpture and architecture. This study analyzed the formativeness of flower patterns expressed in the work of William Morris (1834-1896) who converted ordinary, everyday objects into works of art, and to expand the expressive areas of fashion design by adapting modern mechanic embroidery. The purpose was to offer new possibilities for fashion design method theories through adapting William Morris' 19th-century techniques to 21 st-century modern fashion design. This study aimed to research and analyze the formation of flower pattern embroi dery found in the works of William Morris, who sublimated a normal object used in everyday life into an originative work of art, by focusing on modern mechanical embroidery. This study also tried to confirm the possibility of creating Korean fashion designs by suggesting the possibility of new ideas in fashion designs. Finally, it aimed to actualize the goal of creation of high-value creative fashion designs through using handicraft flower pattern motive embroidery techniques. The contents and methods of this research were as follows: First, formative characteristics found in the works and background of William Morris were sought through a theoretical consideration. Second, design examples that made practical use of works of William Morris were studied. Modern fashion design examples that made practical employment of mechanical embroidery and the embroidery itself were analyzed by considering them theoretically. On this basis, six works were created by sewing machine based on flower patterns by William Morris found in Adobe Illustrator CS5. This resulted in the following conclusions: Firstly, a design of combined Western tradition and modern dress was proposed by reconstructing the delicate, splendid and aristocratic characteristics of 19th-cent ury artist William Morris into modern fashion designs. Secondly, formative characteristics that could be applied as motives of new fashion designs in various ways were emphasized by reconstructing the flower pattern e mbroidery of William Morris. Thirdly, adapting the two-dimensional works of William Morris to modern mechanical embroidery was able to give it rich and gentle surface effects. Fourthly, the result of adapting William Morris' flower patterns to the simple silhouettes of modern fashion design through sewing machines was an added feminine appeal. This research reconstructed and used the flower pattern embroidery as an applied motif for dress by investigating the structure of flower pattern embroidery and fig urative formativeness of works done by William Morris. It is hoped that through continuous future research on various flower patterns by William Morris, design using various motives can be expanded.
