알베르토 캄포 바에자의 미니멀리즘 건축의 조형적 특성을 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

The borderline between genres of culture and art today has become vague and the concept of defining each genre has expanded due to number of experiments between various cultures and ideas. Among these genres of culture, architecture and fashion are both art forms that reflect the social status and the cultural paradigm of its time. They both express individual, social, and cultural identity. This research has its basis in that architecture and fashion are expressions of social and cultural identity of its time and it focuses on the formative characteristics of architectural works by Alberto Campo Baeza and applies them to fashion design. Alberto Campo Baeza is a minimalist architect who views that the meaning of a space can be completed when man and nature can co-exist in the space. In his work, the simplicity in form is simultaneously complex. This is the essence of Baeza’s work and this research attempts to apply this essence to fashion design in order to bring out variety and individuality in minimal expressions without any details. The resulting design will be completed when it is worn by real live human rather than fixed mannequins. The formative characteristics of Alberto Campo Baeza’s architectural works are like the following; Firstly, Baeza’s works exist in a horizontal structure surrounded by its environment. Horizontal lines visually create stability and give a sense of definiteness. These lines are emphasized when a hexahedron is used as the basic form of the architectural structure. Secondly, the most important expression in Baeza’s work is the movement in a space through the usage of light. Light can be the source of creating tension and energy in a space and it can also be an important source that can emphasize the structure of architecture. Thirdly, Baeza emphasizes the beauty of restraint. According to him, the idea of an architect can structure a space through restrained expression and when man and nature can co-exist in this space, the essence of architecture is completed. This restrained expression is shown through the usage of simple finishing materials, achromatic color and the color white and through open structured, multi-functional space. Fourthly, in Baeza’s work, he accentuates the flow of the light and space through contrast. Such can be witnessed through the usage of closed section versus open space, concrete versus wood, and straight lines versus curved lines. Contrast used in these examples also emphasizes the movement of light. Lastly, the hexahedrons are used as repetitive elements. This creates a sense of direction and order and it extends one’s attention to its surrounding environment leading to expanded experience of other surrounding spaces. Considering the five characteristics mentioned above, each characteristic did not stand on its own but accentuated other characteristic at the same time. Through the co-existence of these four characteristics, all of the effects were amplified, which articulated the essence and the purpose of Alberto Compo Baeza’s works. This effectively shows the essential thought of Baeza that human and nature should co-exist in a space. With the understanding that architecture and fashion is similar in that they both apply formative elements in a three dimensional form and that they both require practicality and artistic value, I have analyzed the formative elements in architect Alberto Campo Baeza’s works and applied them to my fashion design. The outcome results are like the following; Firstly, horizontal, vertical, and symmetrical expression in Alberto Campo Baeza’s architectural works can also be used in fashion design, which reflects the characteristic of the human body. Secondly, simple and restrained sensibility that was achieved through minimal expressions in Alberto Campo Baeza’s works can similarly realized in fashion design when details are minimalized. Thirdly, contrast between black and white, transparent and opaque in alberto Campo Baeza’s works can be realized through contrast in materials and colors in fashion design. Lastly, repetition of lines and planes in alberto Campo Baeza’s works can be applied in fashion design as detailed expression of repetitive lines of horizontal and vertical form in simple forms. Through this research, I was able to realize that architecture and fashion are both perfect mediums that can express social and cultural identity and that both genre can be completed in its meaning when body and space co-exist. Also, I hope that this research can act as an initiation towards a new thinking in fashion design through applying restrained aesthetic as a design element.;건축과 패션은 창조활동에 의해 미적인 세계관을 표현하는 것으로서 한 시대를 반영하는 중요한 사회 매개체 역할을 하며 상호 의존적인 관계를 갖고 발전해 왔다. 오늘날의 문화예술은 각 장르간의 경계가 허물어졌으며, 각각의 장르를 규정하는 개념 또한 다양한 문화와 사상을 바탕으로 한 여러 가지 실험적 시도를 통해 확대되어 왔다. 특히 건축과 패션은 18세기 그 형태와 구조의 유사성에 관한 논의가 시작된 이래로 최근 까지 미학연구에 있어서 유사한 분야로 연구되고 있으며, 긴 역사 속에서 기능성과 조화된 조형예술이라는 공통점을 가지고 발전하고 있다. 아름다움을 추구하는 인간의 욕구는 ‘디자인’이라는 개념이 정립되기 이전인 원시시대부터 다양한 시각예술의 형태로 표현되고 있는데, 그 중 건축과 패션은 그 시대의 사회상과 문화의 패러다임을 총체적으로 반영하는 시대표현의 예술이자 시각표현의 예술로 여겨지며 개인적, 사회적, 문화적 정체성을 표명하고 있다. 현대 미니멀리즘 건축 작가들은 다양한 표현 방법을 통해 단순함을 극대화하며 공간을 제시하는데, 그 중 알베르토 캄포 바에자는 ‘더 적은 것으로 더 많은 것을(More with Less)'이라는 개념을 바탕으로 건축의 본질을 표현하는 작가이다. 그의 건축은 인식의 주체인 인간과 건축물이 놓여있는 자연을 중심에 두고 의미 지어지는 공간이다. 그에게 있어 자연은 건축의 연속이며, 건축은 자연의 일부 인 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 알베르토 캄포 바에자의 작품에서 나타나는 조형적 특성을 현대 패션 디자인에 응용하여 단순하지만 독창적인 디자인을 제시하고자 한다. 관련 문헌과 학술 연구지, 건축전문지, 인터넷 등의 이론적 연구를 통해 고찰하여 본 알베르토 캄포 바에자 건축의 조형적 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 캄포 바에자의 작품은 그것이 속해 있는 환경 속에서 수직과 수평의 구조로 존재한다. 수직·수평성은 시각적인 안정감과 함께 완결된 형태로 다가오는데, 이것은 건축물의 기초형태로 육면체를 사용하며 더욱 강조된다. 둘째, 캄포 바에자의 건축에서 가장 중요시되는 표현은 빛을 이용한 공간 안의 유동성이다. 빛은 변화하는 각도에 따라 공간 안에 긴장감과 생동감을 주는 주체가 되기도 하며, 반대로 건축의 구조를 강조해 주는 역할을 하는 중요한 요소가 된다. 셋째, 캄포 바에자는 절제성을 강조하며, 건축가의 생각은 절제된 표현을 통해 공간을 구성하고, 그 안에 사람과 자연이 공존할 때 건축의 본질이 완성된다고 생각한다. 이는 단순한 마감재의 사용, 무채색과 백색의 사용, 개방된 구조의 다기능적 공간 등으로 표현하고 있다. 넷째, 캄포 바에자 건축에서는 대비성을 통해 공간과 빛의 흐름을 강조하고 있다. 폐쇄적 단면과 개방된 공간, 콘크리트와 나무, 직선과 곡선의 사용 등이 그 예인데, 이는 앞에서 언급한 빛의 유동성을 강조해 주는 역할의 요소가 되기도 한다. 다섯째, 캄포 바에자는 단순한 반복을 통해 질서와 방향성을 부여하고, 그 방향성은 주변 공간으로 시선을 연장해줌으로써 다양한 공간으로의 확장을 경험하게 하는 반복성이다. 이때 반복의 요소는 패턴화되어 연속적으로 보여지며. 부분이 아닌 전체를 구성하고 있다. 이렇게 캄포 바에자 건축의 조형적 특성을 수직·수평성, 유동성, 절제성, 대비성 그리고 반복성의 5가지 특성으로 분류하여 고찰해본 결과, 각각의 특성은 단순히 그것만의 표현으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 다른 특성을 강조해 주기 위한 요소로서 그 역할을 하기도 하며, 서로 다른 특성이 공존하여 효과를 극대화 해줄 때 캄포 바에자가 의도하는 건축 본질이 완성된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 제작된 작품을 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 캄포 바에자 건축에서의 수직·수평성과 대칭적 구조는 인체의 특성을 반영하는 패션디자인에서 수직과 수평, 대칭적인 구조로 표현할 수 있었다. 둘째, 캄포 바에자 건축의 최소화된 표현에 의해 도달했던 단순성과 절제된 감각은 패션디자인에 있어서 디테일을 최소화하여 표현했을 때 동일하게 구현될 수 있었다. 셋째, 캄포 바에자 작품의 블랙 & 화이트와 투명 & 불투명의 대비성은 패션디자인에서 소재와 색채의 대조적 구성으로 구현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 캄포 바에자 건축에 있어서 선과 면의 반복성은 패션디자인에 있어서 단순한 형태 안에 수직과 수평선의 반복이 나타나는 디테일 요소로 표현할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과를 통해 건축과 패션은 인체와 공간이 공존할 때 그 의미가 완성되며, 사회 문화적 정체성을 표현하기에 충분한 매개체라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 건축에서의 표현 특성은 패션에 접목하여 디자인 요소로 활용할 수 있으며, 그 표현은 단순화 될 때 의미가 부각될 수 도 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 이에 절제의 미학을 디자인 요소로 활용함으로써 패션 디자인 영역에 있어서 새로운 발상의 계기가 되길 바란다.
