Alcohol addiction is known as a "family disease" that could not only damage the alcoholics themselves physically, mentally, psychologically and socially, but is also severly detrimental to the family. In particular, it has negative effects on their children, and thus hindering the children from maintaining close relationships with the opposite sex when they become adults. As human beings seek after the desire of relationships, maintaining appropriate romantic relationships can not only function as a good discipline and help them mature, but also is an important process in both choosing their spouse and having a good marriage life. However, the children of alcoholics tend to have difficulty having trust and close relationships in their family-of-origin, having unstable attachment formation, experiencing abuse and absence of boundaries. Because such experiences in their family-of-origin affect their romantic relationships in their adulthood, it is well-known that they repeat their dysfunctional roles and appearance of their family-of-origin in their romantic relationships. Based on this, this study examined the romantic relationships of the unmarried women of paternal alcoholics, in order to further understand their relation experience and to provide basic data for social welfare interventions. The research question is this: what are the romantic relationships of the unmarried women of paternal alcoholics like? Through the qualitative study which seems to be more suitable for comprehending the complicated and intricate nature of developing romantic relationships, this study was conducted to delve into this relatively unknown area of research interest. Particularly, this study examined the structure of meaning in the subjects' romantic relationships through the phenomenological method designed by Giorgi who investigated the fundamental/essential structure of phenomena with the method of description. The subjects of this study were selected by the method of the criterion sampling. From a counseling center in the Seoul area and a therapeutic communities in Kyonggi province, and the Al-Anon, among the unmarried female ACOA(Adult Children of Alcoholics) who met the requirements of the selection criterion for this study, seven of them who consented to participate in this study were selected for the subjects of this study. The subjects of this study was narrowed down to the unmarried ones, among the 20 to 39-year-old female ACOA whose father had participated in a therapeutic program or received medical treatments for their alcohol addiction. The data collection was conducted from May, 2011 to February, 2012. The data was collected by the method of in-depth interview. According to the interview results, 824 units of meaning were extracted. By transferring the units of meaning consisted of colloquial expressions that the subjects spoke into the academic terminology, these units of meaning were integrated into five categories and twelve theme clusters. The romantic relation experience of the unmarried female of paternal alcoholics consists of five components in total. These components are as follows. <I see ME: the personal identity of the daughter of an alcoholic>, <I see YOU: You who are overshadowed by my father.>, <I meet YOU: the Hedgehog Dilemma>, <WE also stand up: the tuning of relationships >, <New WE: go on a trip again.> The unit of <I see ME: the personal identity of the daughter of an alcoholic> shows the close relations between the personal identity that they acquire through the experience of having romantic relationships, and their alcoholic father. For them, because of such personal identity, they get to shrink and become nervous in front of the opposite sex. Due to such self-image, even though she tries to cover and avoid the fact that she is a child of an alcoholic, at the same time, the irony lies in the fact that she herself has the identity of "the daughter of an alcoholic“ that is also the one who wants to be understood the most. The unit of <I see YOU: You who are overshadowed by my father.> shows their inconsistent perspectives to the significant other. For them, the significant other is the one who projects the ideal images of their parents and is the image of their parents whom they wanted to reject. The unrealistic expectations of the children of alcoholics could lead to the disappointment if they get to find some faults in their significant other in reality. In turn, because of this disappointment, the significant other who does not meet up the expectations could also receive criticism that is targeted to their parents and has been cumulated since their childhood. Hence, their perspectives toward their significant other could "play an intricate tag of war" between empathy and ignorance, and expectations and criticism. In the unit of <I meet YOU: the Hedgehog Dilemma>, expecting the warmth of relationships, the subjects try to make close relationships. In such endeavors, they also "savor" their first happiness, and experience a blissful haven where they can escape the muddled reality that their paternal alcoholic exists. At the same time, however, they also experience doubts, anxiety, and the fear of losing themselves. In the end, they end up falling into a dilemma, a double-bind in which they neither approach, nor withdraw. In the unit of <WE also stand up: the tuning of relationships>, the contradicting aspects are shown in that the relationships are (defined as both) the severance of relations that are lack of true communications, and the mashed relations that feel to be burdensome In the relationships, they experience the deserting from themselves by suppressing and adjusting their desires, emotions, and feelings to their significant other. However, the irony lies in the fact that the disappearance of "me" could be interpreted as the sheer will of "mine" which is irrelevant to "you," and it is the one that is for "me." Moreover, they experience each other as strangers by perceiving the significant other as the entity into which their fantasy is projected. This relationship is the one that cannot face the true "me" and the true "you." In this coexistence between the selfish sacrifice and the "feeling-out-of-place" love, they strive to find the appropriate distance between "you" and "me" by repeating the approach and the withdrawal. <New WE: I go on a trip again.> shows the start of the relationships of the subjects. The subjects perceive their relationships as reflection and contemplation. With these perspectives of relationships, they try to solve some new solutions to their relationships and discover their changed images. Slowly but steadily, they get to march toward the new relationships that are different to the old ones. The answer to the research question, "what are the romantic relationships of the unmarried women of paternal alcoholics like?" is "finding the way in the maze of dilemma." Starting from the perplexed perspectives in which they look at "me" and "you," the subjects experience the bewildered relationships that are mutually contradicting. They are in the contradicting maze in which there are no "me" and "you," and the uncomfortable place where they do not feel comfortable. However, these subjects continue to make endeavors to find the way, not sitting in the maze. They also experience their little changes in the negative relation patterns that are repeated. All the while, the relationships with the opposite sex of the adult children of alcoholics have been viewed as sheer negative ones through fragmentary phenomena. However, the results imply that the relationships with the opposite sex should be understood in the dynamic and holistic context. The implications of this study for the field of social welfare are as follows. First, this study provided profound insights into the ACOA who received scarce attention in the field and practice of social welfare. The results show the holistic aspects of the relation experience of the unmarried female ACOA. Based on these findings, this analysis shows the negative aspects such as bad self-image, extorted expectations toward the significant other, distrust and anxiety in relationships, the immaturity in dealing with conversations. Furthermore, the analysis also shows various features and tendencies, and the positive aspects such as intimacy and happiness in relationships, reflection and contemplation for relationships, and their personal growth. Second, this study provides the foundations of discussion for the concept of "separation" that have been empirically emphasized in self-help group as well as the concrete rationale behind the intervention for the "separation." For the subject, the two crucial components of having romantic relationships are the "I" of "the daughter of an alcoholic," and the "You" who is overshadowed by my father. By showing the aforementioned two important components, the findings clearly show that the subjects do not have "separated perspectives" from their parents in the perspective of seeing themselves and their significant other in the romantic relationships. In order to have sound romantic relationships, this study implies that the ACOA need to separate themselves from their paternal alcoholic in establishing their identity and their life criteria. In order for this to be implemented, both the unconstrained exploration of their self identity, and the practical interventions of practitioners for realistic expectation about significant other are in need. Third, the opportunities of self-correction, educational opportunities, and specific strategies on developing intimidate relationships that they are not able to acquire in their family-of-origin should be provided. Besides, for those who do not have healthy role-models in their family-of-origin, the support that can form positive expectations toward marriage should be provided by giving educational opportunities and basic information on marriage life and the romantic relationships. Fourth, thorough investigation and active intervention about sexual abuse should be provided and conducted for the ACOA. In addition, intervention should be in need in order to assist those who can not have appropriate sexual values and attitudes through their parents. Fifth, although self-help groups and clinical intervention have positive effect, they have negative effect, either. The negative effect are that their stigmatization of themselves as a family member of an alcoholic and the inclination to the attribution of their personal problems to alcohol addiction. Hence, professional interventions should be implemented in order to minimize such aforementioned negative effects, and to help them apply their understanding of the effects of alcohol addiction to their healthy lives. The positive effects of these self-help groups or clinical intervention should be maximized with the intensive and professional intervention for the ACOA, separating from traditional self-help groups or clinical interventions that have been centered mostly on spouse. Last but not least, because the subjects of this study were narrowed down to the unmarried female adult children of paternal alcoholics, this study did not include the adult male children of parental alcoholics, children of maternal alcoholics, and the children at different stages of life cycle. In addition, further research should be conducted in order to examine the effects of clinical interventions or self-help groups. Not only that, more in-depth and concrete research for the effects of sexual assault should be also conducted. Thus, further concrete follow-up research should be conducted in order to develop more professional programs that can assist the ACOA in their romantic relationships.-
