『엠마』에 표현된 어머니의 부재

Abstract

In Jane Austen’s Emma, Emma Woodhouse is depicted as a superficially cheerful and carefree daughter of the Woodhouse family, but Austen concentrates on Emma’s inner consciousness by describing the sorrow of motherlessness and loneliness that exist beneath her cheery exterior. This thesis investigates the absence that Emma feels as a person without the mother to guide her and how this deficiency is overcome by the bond of friendship with other women. The first chapter of this thesis will consider the meaning of the mother-daughter relationship as the novel's hidden plot and explore the theories regarding this relationship. The second chapter argues that Austen acknowledged the importance of motherhood. This can be found in her portrayal of characters who play motherly roles in the novel. The third chapter explores Emma's deficiency as a motherless daughter. Mothers had an important role in private sphere as 'domestic woman' since the mid eighteenth century. They had to raise the family and took care of household. The absence of mother brings Emma to suffer the lack of good education and adequate discipline. Emma is proud and snobbish, makes immature mistakes, and has awkward relationships with others. The fourth chapter explores Mr. Knightley's role as a discipliner of Emma and how her friendship with Jane and Harriet complements to Kr. Knightley's guidance. Emma fills the loneliness caused by her motherlessness with female companionship and intimacy. In the process of developing friendship with Jane and Harriet, Emma comes to realize her faults and achieve growth through self-examination. Ultimately, this thesis aims to argue that Emma demonstrates the lonely and difficult developmental process of a woman who has no mother who can assist her growth with both authority and affection.;제인 오스틴은 『엠마』에서 표면적으로는 어머니의 부재로 인한 문제가 없는 듯한 우드하우스가의 딸 엠마를 묘사하지만, 밝은 성격 아래 존재하는 어머니에 대한 상실감과 외로움을 그리면서 엠마의 내면의식을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문에서는 어머니와 같이 교육과 지도를 해줄 사람이 없는 엠마가 겪게 되는 결핍에 대해 알아보고 그것을 여성간의 유대감으로 채워나가며 성장하는 그녀의 모습을 살펴보고자 한다. 서론에서는 엠마 뿐만 아니라, 제인과 헤리엇의 어머니를 모두 부재하게 등장시키는 오스틴의 의도적인 플롯으로서 딸과 어머니의 관계가 갖는 의미를 논하고 모녀관계에 대한 연구의 흐름을 알아본다. 제 2장에서는 어머니의 역할을 하고 있는 여성 등장인물들을 통해 오스틴이 어머니의 중요성을 어떻게 보여주고 있는지를 논한다. 제 3장에서는 어머니의 교육의 부재로 인해 엠마가 겪는 결핍을 살펴본다. 당시 어머니들은 사적인 영역에서 ‘가정 여성’으로서 중요한 역할을 하며 아이들과 가정의 일들을 돌보았다. 이러한 어머니의 역할을 해주는 사람이 없는 엠마는 무엇보다 제대로 된 교육을 받지 못했다. 그리고 오만하고 속물적인 근성을 가지게 되며 이것은 그녀가 인간관계를 형성하는 데에 있어 어렵게 만든다. 제 4장에서는 나이틀리에 의해 어머니 역할의 일부가 이루어지고 있는 것을 고찰한다. 그리고 엠마가 어머니의 부재로 인한 외로움을 여성간의 친밀한 관계 속에서 메워나가고 있음을 밝힌다. 엠마는 제인, 헤리엇과의 관계를 형성해 나가는 과정 속에서 잘못을 깨닫고 반성하고 자아성찰을 통해 스스로 교육하는 변화를 보여준다. 본 논문은 이상의 고찰을 통하여 『엠마』가 여성으로서의 같은 경험을 가지고 있으며 가정 안에서 권위와 사랑을 가지고 딸의 성장을 도울 수 있는 어머니가 없는 여성이 외롭고 힘들게 성장해 나가는 과정을 보여주는 소설임을 살펴보겠다.
