분리된 자아 형상을 통한 정체성 표현

Abstract

예술가는 자신의 이야기를 작품으로 풀어내는 행위를 통해 자신의 삶을 돌아보는 동시에 타인의 삶에 경각심을 일으킨다. 한 예술가의 사적인 이야기가 보편적 공감을 일으킬 수 있는 것은 우리 모두에게 공통으로 적용되는 무언가가 존재하기 때문이다. 이 공통분모의 기반을 ‘자기실현(自己實現)’이라는 인간의 내면탐구에 대한 본능으로 이해해 본다면 예술은 예술가의 내면을 시각화한 결과물이며, 또한 이 시도는 많은 사람들의 정신세계 탐구 욕구를 자극시킬 것이다. 이렇듯 예술의 목적이 감상자에게 신선한 삶의 자극을 불어넣는 것에 있기에 예술가의 역할은 아름다움의 창조와 더불어 삶에 의미 있는 메시지를 던지는 것에 있다. 새로운 삶의 시선을 작품에 담기 위해 본인의 작품은 스스로에 대한 관찰과 연구에서 비롯되었다. 자신의 이야기를 솔직히 풀어내는 과정을 통해 본인은 인간 심리의 보편성을 이해할 수 있었고 이번 논문을 통해 본인 작품들을 분석심리학적 관점에서 다시 바라보며 객관적인 설명과 이해를 도모하고자 했다. 이를 위해 분석심리학 개념들을 설명하고 이에 상응하는 본인의 작품 요소들을 비교하여 이해하고자 했다. 또한 내면세계를 구체적 이미지로 형상화한 본인 작품의 이론적 배경으로서 상징의 의미와 기능에 관해 살펴보았으며 본인의 주제인 페르소나가 다른 작품들에서는 어떻게 상징되었는지 비교 분석하였다. 작품을 통해 전달하고자 하는 주된 이야기는 의식의 주체로서의 자아가 자각(自覺)한 페르소나, 자아의 페르소나 인식의 변화, 그리고 이를 통한 자기실현(自己實現)의 과정과 그 의미였다. 스스로를 관찰하는 과정과 그 결과로서의 작품들을 분석심리학의 관점에서 분석하여 인간이 가지는 보편적 심리를 이해하고자 했다. 인간 심리를 객관적으로 분석해내기 위한 학문으로 작품을 이해하는 과정은 서로 상통하는 부분이 많았다. 지극히 사적인 이야기와 그 접근이 보편적 인간 정신과 심리 세계를 대변할 수 있다는 흥미로운 발견 과정을 통해 예술을 이해하고 읽어내는 새로운 시각의 가능성을 논하는 것이 이 논문의 주된 목적이다. 본인의 작품은 본인의 다양한 인격을 자각(自覺)하면서 시작되었다. 사회생활과 인간관계 속에서 보여 지는 낯선 본인의 모습에서 이질(異質)감을 느꼈고 정체성에 의문을 갖게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 정체성의 혼란을 의식의 주체인 자아와 의식의 대상인 페르소나의 분리를 통해 표현하고자 했다. 작품 안에서 분리된 페르소나와 자아는 각각 고양이와 어린 아이로 상징된다. 고양이는 사회를 살아가면서 사회의 기대에 부응하고자 만들어진 외적 인격으로서 고양이의 차갑고 신비한 분위기와 본인이 인식한 페르소나와의 유사성에서 착안했다. 어린 아이가 고양이를 쓰고 있는 형상을 통해 분리된 자아를 표현했고 두 형상의 관계 변화를 통해 정체성의 형성 과정을 이야기하고자 했다. 형식적 측면에서는 미지(未知)의 내면세계를 표현하기 위한 몇 가지 방법에 관해 설명하고자 했다. 본인의 모든 작품들은 내면세계를 배경으로 하는데 이러한 상상의 배경 공간을 표현하기 위해 다양한 상징적 요소를 배경에 설정했다. 무의식과 의식의 영역을 분리시켜 표현하기 위하여 그림 안의 그림 형식을 취했고 도안(圖案)적 형태와 단순한 색으로 비현실적인 공간을 설정했다. 각각의 화면 공간이 연결되어 하나의 이야기로 읽힐 수 있도록 병풍(屛風)형식을 변형해 사용하기도 했고 신비한 분위기를 연출하기 위해 금분과 분채를 섞어 은은하게 반짝이는 색의 효과를 주기도 했다. 방법론적 측면에서는 전통 기법을 응용한 본인 작품의 기법적 특성을 설명하고자 했다. 비단이라는 전통 재료의 투명한 성질과 조선시대 초상화 제작에 사용된 배채(背彩)기법의 오묘한 색감 표현, 박탈(剝脫) 예방 등의 특성을 본인만의 방식으로 재해석해 보았다. 또한 비단의 투명성과 배채(背彩)기법 차이에 따른 효과를 극대화시키기 위해 이중 구조의 화판을 제작했고 이를 통해 무의식이라는 현실과 대립되는 신비한 공간을 연출할 수 있었다. 본 논문은 분리된 자아의 형상을 통해 내면세계를 작품으로 표출해냄으로써 본인 스스로 본인을 이해하고 일깨우는 과정을 객관적인 이론 설명과 함께 분석하는데 목적을 두었다. 본인의 개인적 고백이 다른 사람들에게도 스스로를 돌아보며 이해하는 기회가 되었으면 한다.;Artists usually base their works of art from their own lives and this, in turn, helps enlighten other people with regard to their own way of living. The reason for this is that art is a true expression of the artist's emotions to which people from around the world can relate or understand. If we take into consideration the common denominator as 'self-realization', which is the natural human instinct of exploring the inner mind, then art is the result of visualizing the inner world and it has a certain kind of attraction to influence people's psyche. Since the purpose of art is to give a fresh impetus to viewers' lives, artists play important roles not only in creating beauty, but also in sending significant messages to people's lives. My paintings begin with self-observation that contains new perspectives about life. I am able to perceive the human psychology through the process of expressing my experiences in these paintings. Through the use of the Jungian psychology theory, I analyzed my paintings in order to understand my works of art in an objective manner. Furthermore, I included explanations of some concepts of Carl Jung's analytic psychology and compared my artworks with psychological concepts. I also demonstrated the definitions and functions of the symbols to explain my paintings through physical visualizations of my inner world as well as the comparison of the different ways to symbolize the persona between other people's artworks and mine. The main topic that I wanted to discuss is in relation to the perception of one's persona by the ego which is the subject of the conscious, the transformation of the ego's attitude toward persona, and the definition of self-realization through the whole process. I analyzed my paintings, which are the processes and results of my self-observation, with Jungian psychology in order to understand the general human psychology. I have figured out some common attributes between my paintings and the Jungian psychology, which is the study of the human mind. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss a new perspective of comprehension and appreciation of art from the interesting discovery that art can represent the universal human psyche as well as the psychological realm. My works have started with the realization of my diverse personalities. Due to the peculiar emotions that I have felt from the unusual characteristics that were exhibited through my social interactions, I have been confused about my identity. In order to demonstrate this identity crisis, I expressed my ego(a subject of consciousness) and my persona(an object of consciousness) separately. In my paintings, the separated persona and ego are symbolized by the images of cats and a child, respectively. I found a few similar attributes of my persona with a cat's cold-hearted and mysterious behavior. The images of the cats in my paintings symbolize the personality made for living up to social expectations and norms. I wanted to express my identity confusion by using the separated images of the child and cats. I conveyed my self-identity by two separated images of the ego and persona as well as by the figurative changes of their relationship. Moreover, I elaborated on some formative methods that I used to express an unknown inner world, which can be seen through the background of my paintings. I used unrealistic shapes and colors to express my imaginary world. For the expression of the distinction between the unconscious and conscious, I described some frames into the paintings. I also used and transformed the form of Byungpung(a traditional folding screen) so that people can read and understand the whole story from each of the panels. I can incorporate the surreal effect through the use of mixed Korean pigments and gold powder. I demonstrated the characteristics of a certain traditional technique, which is called Baechae technique(painting on the reverse side of paper or silk), and created my own version of the Baechae technique that I have applied into my paintings. I made use of a transparent silk, which is a traditional painting material, and I have studied the Baechae technique, which is mostly used and developed in the portraits during the Joseon Dynasty. It is known for its merits of having vibrant and lasting paint. I then produced and installed three-dimensional drawing boards(one for silk and another for paper background) in order to maximize the effects of the translucent silk and the Baechae technique. By using the Baechae technique and its impressive color effects, I was able to create surrealistic masterpieces completely different from reality. The purpose for this paper is to display the process of understanding and awakening myself through the expression of my inner world which contains separated images of my ego and persona. I hope that my paintings will serve as my personal acknowledgment and become an opportunity for other people to attune themselves with their inner minds.
